Hello everyone! I'm new at this

Hi there! My names Margaret, and I joined this forum hoping to get some advice on er- mermaiding? Is that even a word I wonder? (and also at the EXTREME relief that there are other people over the age of 7 who do this, hehe). I'm 16 years old.

I'm very relieved you have detailed information on tail-making- as an artist (and goth :P) I really did NOT want to buy a tail from someone else when I knew I could make one- I like to do things with my very own two hands (plus nobody sells black tails :()

My avatar is a REALLY old drawing of my mercharacter Ouija- her tail is black like I want to make mine, but my crappy shading makes it look like it starts black and ends silver- oopsie, hehe.

I actually heard about mermaiding (I'm going to continue to use this verb until someone tells me the correct one) a while ago when I read about a girl who did it, however they made it sound like you had to go to a special school for YEARS to be able to do it.
So I forgot about it until recently, when I found a video of mermaid Melissa and was reminded of it :) Now at this point I STILL thought you had to go to a school for this. Luckily after more reasearch I realized no, you don't have to, hehe.

In terms of a tail, here's where I'm at. I'm hoping I can convince my mother to allow me to get a monofin for Christmas. She wants me to exercise more, and if I swim with the monofin I'll get that :)
As for where to swim, I only have my local pool and I was worried it wouldn't allow monofins, however I just found the pool handbook and there is no ban on monofins or any swim equipment for that matter- I read it cover to cover :) Yay!
And honestly, that pool almost always has crazy little kids doing really crazy and dangerous things while their parents pay absolutely no attention, so the guards have way more to worry about then a 16 year old girl who's been swimming since age 5 and was on THEIR swim team.

I actually haven't gone swimming the past two summers becuase my mom didn't have time to take me, but this year I'm old enough to swim without parental supervision, so I can get back in the water next summer! :D

As for the tail, I hope to get started making it in December and start swimming with the monotail next summer when our pool reopens. (It's only open during the summer :()

There are people offering courses on mermaiding and also those who call those courses school (and there is an unsavory particular one which claims that "only those who attended their super special course will be a real mermaid and not one of the bad pretenders"- avoid that one), but there is no worldwide standard on mermaidiness yet.
