Hey MerNetwork! <3

I have finally decided to make my own silicone tail! YAY!!

I've been mermaiding for about two years and I've made two tails (One for me and one for my younger sister) both with spandex fabric and the Finis Wave Monofin.
Over the two years I added painted scales, beads, and lexan to the end of the monofin.

Though I love my tail and swim in it whenever possible I belive its time for an update :D

After much research I've decided to make a silicone tail!!

So after months of gathering the materials and researching every page on the internet (Including asking my MerNetwork friends <3) I think I'm ready to start!!

Scales:

I was debating between the scale sheet or following #PearlieMae and making the single scales. After a lot of thought I have decided to make the scale sheet because it seems like its going to be a little easier and less time consuming. Though I still really want to try the single scale method, it will just have to wait for another day. ;)

When painting my first spandex tail I used a 1.5" circle cutter, cut out the foam circles with the sticky backs and lined them up like a scale pattern to then outline. in doing this the scales looked kinda big. So for my silicone tail I went with the 1" circle cutter.

32486

32478

Then stuck them to a piece of plywood

32479

I then switched over to the molding.

Fins:

I used 'Van Aken Plastalina clay' in a skin tone colour (NOTE: any colour would do but I thought it would show the most detail when sculpting)
#PearlieMae says she used this clay and it worked fine! But I sometimes have a nak to mess things up

I wanted to test out the clay before making the fluke so I started with some Pectoral Fins!

I sculpted the fins (sorry i forgot to take a picture!)

I used Casting Craft Mold Release Conditioner that I found at Michaels. I put on two coats letting dry in beween the night before I molded and a coat in the mornign before poring the first layer.

I was told by #Mermaid Kate Silverfin to use 'Gel Coat' to capture more detail before adding the fiberglass resin.
(NOTE: There is waxed, unwaxed, and neutral waxed gel coat! I spoke to the customer service guy at the shop and he told me unwaxed would be the base layer of a project were as waxed would be the top layer because when it cures the wax raises to the top giving it a nice finishing coat. But they didn't sell unwaxed in the size I needed so the guy told me to give the cured waxed or neutral waxed gel coat a quick sand to buff up the top layer before poring the fiberglass resin.) I used the Neutral Waxed.

Layer of curing Gel coat

32480

I think I pored it a little thick.

About two hours later...... :phew:

Then when cured I pored 'Bondo Fiberglass resin'

32481

Another two and a half hour wait

Until finally......

32482

Success!!!!!! :jawdrop: ;)

(NOTE: I tested out a couple scales to make sure the gel coat would work with them as well)

A little cleaning

32483

(NOTE: the scales seemed to have sucked up a lot more of the mold release then expected but they pealed out super easy. I'm thinking another 2 or 3 more coats for the large scale sheet though)

32484

I then used q-tips to get out the rest of the clay

32485

I'm super happy with how its turning out so far! More updates soon <3 :phew: :D

Looking lovely so far! It looks like the foam scales have released really well, which is great news!
It's hard to tell the thickness of the gelcoat from pictures, but generally you only need it a couple of millimetres thick. Did you use any fibreglass matting or fabric in with the normal resin at all?

Hollydell
08-24-2015, 05:13 AM
Thanks so much!! <3
I think the Gel coat is about 2-2.5 cm thick.
And yes I used 'Bondo fiberglass mat' there where two different kinds one that looked nice and neatly woven and the other is every which way. When I searched the difference a lot of sites said the every which way messing looking one was better. I still dont know the difference though :P

Mermaid Kate Silverfin
08-24-2015, 06:00 AM
Woah, that's super thick. It only needs to be about 2-4 millimetres thick, which should save you a lot of resin. If you just brush it thickly on (sort of brush it thin first to get the details, then gloop it on a bit after), you should be fine. Then after a while (depends on the weather, from 2-12 hours), brush a thin coat of fibreglass resin, put your matting or cloth down, soak it with more resin, and repeat until you're happy with it (I usually do two layers, so it ends up being gelcoat, resin, mat, resin, mat, resin). The whole thing shouldn't be more than about 5mm thick. When it is cured, it should be slightly flexible, not a solid block of resin. Hope this helps!
I think the matting is slightly better as it goes in every direction, but I just find the fabric kind so much easier to deal with, so I've been using that one myself.

The difference between the matt and the cloth is based on its use. Matt is thicker with more air pockets and holds more resin, good for molds and other thicker projects. The cloth is for car body work and intricate shapes. Its thinner and smoother and holds less resin. Both the matt and the cloth are glass fibers blown very thin. Cloth has long strands of woven fibers where matt is more of a glass hairball flattened.

For a proper resin mold you need at least 3 layers of fibers. Its shouldnt be overly flexable. This stuff is designed to replace body parts on cars so it should be rather stiff, orherwise its prone to serious warping and cracks.

You also dont have to use the special gel coat. Ypu can just pour a thin coat of the resin on and let it tack. When its almost set its solid but tacky and the fiber cloth just sticks right on top of it making it easy to add layer after layer. Once the first smooth layer is on and set the rest can go on one right after the next. Make sure all the fiber is completely soaked with resin. Even the tiniest bit of fluff on the side can give you nasty slivers while handling it, and silicone will cure with it inside. You dont want that against your skin.

Make sure the castin craft release is completely dry. Bondo resin and it dont mix. It will turn the resin green and keep it from setting.

Good luck!!!!

Wow thanks so much for the tips! I did the gel coat layer, then fiberglass resin, then cloth, then more fiberglass and left it at that. I'll definatly do more cloth layers on the scale sheet!

So this morning when I was looking at my Pectoral fins mold I've come to the conclusion they are too big!
measuring from tip to tip diagnaly its about 9.5 inches long and the widest point is 6 inches.

I remade the pectoral fins with a little different design

32495

this one is 7 inches tip to tip long and about 5 inches wide!

Im thinking of putting the first trail as ankle fins instead :D

I'm hoping to cast the mold for this ASAP but there was a fire close to the border that sent heavy smoke clouds into my city. I can't go outside without coughing and weazing. Better today then yesterday but I hope it clears up soon!

Macropearl // Carbon Black // Duo Green - Purple // and Solar Gold

Yay! ;)

Ooh do you have a design in mind yet? Those colours are really pretty! I look forward to seeing it!
Prairie Mermaid Jamie, I just recommended the gel coat for where you have high ridges in your mould. I tried exactly what you said with my fluke for my first silicone tail, and the resin ran off the high ridges, then pulled away from the clay a bit as it cured, so the subsequent layers had weird ridges and bubbles. Not sure if I just had less viscous resin than normal or what, but it took me ages to sand all the bumps out! I think a scale mould would be fine without the gel coat, as you say. Just thought I'd clarify where I was coming from!

Hollydell
08-25-2015, 04:01 AM
I have kinda a design in my head and I've searched a lot of pictures. I'm horrible at drawing and I dont know how anyone makes their design on the computer!

But it's going to have a relativly similar fluke to the pectoral fins just on a super large scale :p

With the colours I'm thinking mostly green with gold accent :D

Prairie Mermaid Jamie
08-25-2015, 12:12 PM
That is weird kate. It should be fairly thick. Ive never needed mold walls or anything. Older resin can be runnier but you can add more catalyst. You can also let it sit for a few minutes after its been mixed to thicken up. What type of clay did you use? Maybe the type of clay had something to do with it. I know plastilina clay is alot more oily. I had issues wih that and molding this last time. Nothing wanted to stay on it but it did peel out completely first try.

Im going to be making more molds. Ill do some tests with a few kinds of clay.

That duo green/purple is a gorgeous color! The duo colors are so fun!

When my dad gets home from work we are going to pick out some 2x4's that are super straight becasue my scale sheet plywood has a little curve (and by little I mean kinda big) then I'll hopefully have time to pore the mold!!!! I'm freaking out a litte

SO EXCITED

Mermaid Kate Silverfin
08-25-2015, 07:30 PM
Sounds like you're making awesome progress! I have the same problem with the plyboard I'm using for my fluke mould too, I just put heavy weights on it to make it stay flat. Maybe try getting some that is a little thicker?
Jamie, my resin is only slightly thicker than water, so it runs everywhere and I need to build walls to contain it! Sounds like the resin can vary considerably between suppliers, so I'll get my next batch from a different place! I use monster makers clay.

Hollydell
08-25-2015, 09:49 PM
I tried some weights but they didn't work so well. so we just finished putting the box around it!

32527

you cant see it but the boards are underneath :p

clay walls are up! and first mold release spray down. suns slowly starting to set and the air is getting cooler. sigh!! i guess ill have to wait till tomorrow to cast.

Hollydell
08-26-2015, 06:12 PM
OHH NO!!!! I pored my resin and the scales started lifting off the board! I had to leave for an appointment and I'm sitting in the waiting room kinda freaking out I'm so nervous! I mean no big deal if I have to redo it but I'm just nervous it might happen again. Has anyone else had this problem? It's almost like the foam expanded and couldn't stay in the same place so they popped out. If that makes sense. I tried to push them back into place the best I could but cross my fingers it works!!!

Hollydell
08-26-2015, 09:25 PM
Okay, so when I got home the fiberglass was tacky and I was able to push most back into place!! Finished poring and layering fiberglass and cloth. When I get home from yoga class I'll be able to lift it and check it out! Cross your fins and pray to the sea gods this goes well!

Mermaid Kate Silverfin
08-27-2015, 12:36 AM
Yayy! I'm glad you could push them back. Make sure you leave the fiberglass long enough, I generally leave it for a day, so hard not to be impatient! Also, if some resin is under the scales, you can just snap it off if it is small, or break through it. Just be careful not to damage your moulding surface!

Hollydell
08-27-2015, 01:22 AM
Thanks for the tips! I got home and wanted to check it out but my dad told me to leave it too. BLAH i hate waiting  But I did lift my pectoral fin mold and working on cleaning that. Keeps me busy :p

Hollydell
08-27-2015, 01:28 AM
So I only sprayed two layers of the mold release:

32539

32540

Lesson learned!!! There is no such thing as too much but there is such thing as not enough.

Glad I used 5 layers on the scale sheet.

:phew::phew::phew::phew:

Mermaid Kate Silverfin
08-27-2015, 05:27 AM
If you have a dremel (rotary tool), you can use one of the sanding bits to remove foam that is really stuck on (I had the same problem with my first tail). Be careful as it will get hot though, and make sure you wear a dust mask and safety glasses just in case! Otherwise if it is not too stuck, using pop sticks and toothpicks should get it out. You're making great progress!

Hollydell
08-27-2015, 02:01 PM
Great idea! I'll definatly have to try it out!

and thanks

Mermaid Kate Silverfin
08-27-2015, 07:39 PM
No worries, glad to help! Make sure you use safety gear, if you sand any fibreglass it will make a dust that is harmful to you!

Hollydell
08-29-2015, 09:18 PM
Alright! so some bad news. the fiberglass resin grabbed hold of the foam and wont let go. i know i sprayed enough of the mold release so im not sure why it did that. also when mixing the resin i dont think i added enough hardener and some of it didnt cure properly. the mold is able to be saved but i will have to do a lot of repairs and the parts where the foam had lifted into the mold when it was curing has indents. again it can be fixed but it will be a super long process.

so i think im going to try again. i know the gel coat doesn't grip on like the fiberglass so im going to do a very light coat of that before the resin.

also my dad had an idea of using metal cut outs instead has anyone tried this?

Hollydell
08-31-2015, 02:36 AM
My last post was for my scale sheet. I dont know if i clarified that. my pectoral fins mold turned out alright I think

Hollydell
08-31-2015, 02:38 AM

Fin mold beside each other <3 I'm really happy for how its turning out. though its a long process its a lot of fun to do :D

Hollydell
09-01-2015, 11:19 PM
You know your dad finaly accepts your mermaiding when he comes into your room and sees you cutting out scales. he gives a little laugh and says he's going to bed! :P

always better then the awkward conversation "Whats that? or what are you doing?" :P

Mermaid Kate Silverfin
09-01-2015, 11:59 PM
That's really nice that he accepts it :)
Do you have a punch, or are you cutting them out with scissors?

Hollydell
09-02-2015, 12:33 AM
I have a punch. If someone can cut circles with scissors i would be very very impressed :P

Mermaid Kate Silverfin
09-02-2015, 01:59 AM
Haha true, it's just your post before sounded like you may have been cutting them by hand! I did that for my first tail because there wasn't a punch in the shape I wanted, it took me forever!

Hollydell
09-12-2015, 04:49 AM
So not a new update just some info.
second scale sheet is taking forever to lay out. I'm glueing each scale down instead of just using the sticky backs so its taking a lot longer.
also my back has been really acting up so i can hardly work on it
Hoping to get some more progress done when possible

Hollydell
01-08-2016, 01:22 AM
Alright, so I'm back and I have a lot of updating to do!

Since I've been gone:
The second scale sheet was finished being layed out. I put a layer of Modge Podge over top with a couple layers of mold release.
I used a thin layer of Gel Coat (To grab detail) and then a few layers of Bondo Fiberglass resin.
The mold failed horribly :sad eyes::shame::cry:

The Molding materials heated so much it melted the E6000 glue. then the E6000 glue started to heat up and the heat from under the foam lifted parts of the foam off the plywood. The Modge Podge worked great. though the foam lifted none of it moved from it's spot (if that makes sense). The layer of Gel coat was too thin so the lower parts worked well but the tips of the foam (that didnt have enough) had air bubbles. when trying to peel out the foam the tips of the foam pulled away some of the Gel coat. Next time I'll do a couple layers of Gel Coat to make sure it doesnt happen again.
The mold release I used was horrible!!! It worked well for all the tests but when it came to the actual mold it hardly worked at all. going to garbage that one and find something else.

So now I'm on to scale sheet number 3! (and hopefully the last one)
Again I am using the sticky back foam sheets (I cut out A HUGE ammount of none sticky backs and had a horrible time trying to glue down them) so I gave up with that idea. once I'm done laying down the foam circles I will add two layers of Modge Podge glue and then a mold release agent that ill test out on test sheets first ( I heard PAM cooking spray or vaseline work well. I also found a different stronger mold release spray so im crossing my fins one of them will work well.)

34988

34987

After the Second Scale sheet failed I stepped away from the scales for a bit and turned my attention to the fluke.
My dad ordered a Finis Shooter for my birthday (But it got lost in the mail and blah blah blah) so the fluke can change in an instant. this was more for just design.

34989

Anyways. going to continue cutting some circles. ran out this afternoon when laying them out.

At least I have lots of time before I can mold anything (Canada weather is a little too cold :p)

Hollydell
01-12-2016, 01:33 AM
Once again the time has come! The scale sheet is done!!!

http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/01/11/35a328ceadefd77a349d922a8ae0e1c6.jpg

I started putting on the first layer of modge podge and then decided to go in the hot tub instead :p
So that is why some of it looks like it has a white layer over top.

The only day off this week is Friday and I have to go to the pain clinic for my back. If the doctor thinks I need more shots then I won't be able to work on it till next week some time. If I don't need any shots I have the day off so I'll be on it all day!!!!

OKay so after the very very long wait, the lost parcel in the mail, the reorder of a new monofin and again the wait......

IT HAS ARRIVED :D

35387

So sadly I have to work tomorrow, and my mom is hosting a party tomorrow night, but afer the party im gonna be at my dads (Where I keep all the mermaid stuff) and work and work and work!! because I have Thursday off :D

Luna Dreamtide

Ooh yay! Now you can continue working on the tail?

Ashton
01-26-2016, 11:49 PM
after the sealant dries make sure you go over each scale and make sure that you didnt miss a spot. Try and only do maybe 3 coats max, on my first tail I did waaaay to many coats and it kinda dulled the 'scale effect'.

Also make sure when you are using fiberglass resin that you apply mold release as well! It really helps with the clean up.

Hollydell
01-28-2016, 01:29 AM
Yes!!! Now with the monofin I can work on finishing the fluke mold! Then I'll be ready to cast it :)

Thanks for the tips Ashton :D

So I spent the day wokring on the fluke mold.

I pretty much just need to finish smoothing it out (And making sure it's symmetrical), Get the foam ready and then I can cast it in the fiberglass. :D

Another side note. The first monofin (The one that got lost in the mail) It showed up today!!! Guess that means I just have to make another tail ;)

Alright the mold was pored this afternoon! and it was ready to go for this evening!.

When I tried to carefuly lift the mold, the parts where the ribbing/boning/ lifted parts was started to crack. EEK!

So i stopped trying to lift it and added another layer with some fiberglass cloth. needs a couple more hours to fully cure so i will check it out in the morning.

crossing my fingers the extra coat saves it!!

Mermaid Kate Silverfin
02-16-2016, 10:59 PM
Oh no, I hope you can save it! What did you mould it on? It may be easier to flip it so the fibreglass is down and pry it off that way? I used a barbecue spatula to do that on my first fluke mould.

Hollydell
02-16-2016, 11:36 PM
OHH thats a good idea!!!, ive been trying to use a flat head screwdriver and lightly tapping the end of it. I molded it on the piece of plywood, sadly flipping it is not an option. but ill definatly try the BBQ spatula!! :D

If your fiberglass is cracking then you need to make it thicker. Also you need to wait at least 24hours till it is fully cured for it to be super hard. Before then it will still be a bit bendy and give a bit, but after the full cure time is up it should be pretty rigid.

The Water Phoenix
02-17-2016, 02:05 AM
Try using casting plaster if it keeps cracking :) I've used casting plaster and it really works :) A tip is to spray water over it while it's curing so it doesn't cure so fast and crack :)

Yay!!!

35802

So I got it lifted and now I`m cleaning out the mold.

I though it would have some awesome markings from the wood grain! now that its turned over I`m loving it! Except the cleaning part. Wish me luck as i battle the wood :P

I like the look of the lines in all the tails but I wanted something different from everyone else. I've seen people sculpt it out, I've seen fork lines drawn through, but I've never seen actual tree markings from the plywood. Other then little bits of splinter wood getting stuck in the grooves its turning out really well! If I were to mold this again I would add like 5 more coats of Mold release :P.

I find using a chisle and slowly scrapping takes them out but its a slow process.

35815

still a lot more to do but going well.

Also THIRD TIME IS THE CHARM!!!!!!!

I pigmented the silicone with Pearl Ex Macropearl to test out the white glittery one, it doesn't give it much colour but it does sparkle.

Then I tested skin tone colours, I used some powder foundation from covergirl but it turned out super orange and tan against my skin, so I tried the Kat Von D powder cover up, much colour to my skin colour. the only problem I had with the KVD make up was the first time I used it, it clumped in small areas throughout the mold but I tried again and really made sure to scrape all the colour off the bottom and it worked really well.

Sorry for the poor photo kinda hard to catch.
When I lay straight out it goes away... Did I not make it tight enough? Or is it not on properly? :(

Alright so some updates!

I tried out an air gun to paint but instead of a spay it came out as splatter.
Today I started painting

Just kinda playing around with the style.

Not liking how it's turning out though :(

Have you thinned down the silicone you are painting with? Maybe try thinning it more, and go for several thin coats to build up colour. Good luck!

Now I have to let it dry, and once that's finished I need to cut the tail down a little bit at the top because it's a little long in the stomach area then tada!!!! I'm super excited!

Thanks aeliana! I purchased a different green labeled duo green purple, but the colour came out more as a green teal. So I purchased Spring green and used that instead :)
