Hi lovely mermaids! I'm thinking about purchasing a FinFolkProduction Mermaid Tail! They automatically come with the Finis Trainer monofin. I'm not sure on whether I should upgrade to the Competitor monofin. I currently use the Finis Wave monofin to practice. Does anyone know which monofin is closer to the wave? Help!

As a competitor free diver I think that monofins are a matter of feeling: not all the monofins are right for everyone.
Said that the closer type of monofin to the wave in my opinion is the Finis Trainer, also this kind of monofin is more agile and resistant than the competitor (the competitor is made mostly for diving up and down and straight so if you would like to do some tricks while swimming you would find it a bit difficult, more it is made in resin so it's easier to break).

Get the trainer. I am actually changing my competitor from mine to a trainer.

I have used both competitor and trainer in my silicone tails and I prefer the Trainer. I honestly wouldn't get the competitor unless you were looking for a really speedy tail or, as Kassandra mentioned, doing a lot of straight diving.

Thank you so much for all the help! I was really nervous on getting the type that wasn't for me. I think the trainer will be better off! :D

Hi, Cordelia Fins. The Finis Trainer has a smaller blade than the Finis Competitor, and the Trainer's blade is heavier and thicker than that of the Competitor. The Competitor's blade is fiberglass and has sharp edges--the Trainer blade has rounded edges. What that means is--if you train in a pool, you definitely cannot share a lane if you use a Competitor--you can injure others who share a lane with you. I have had three Finis monofins: Trainer, Competitor, and Shooter. Am now thinking of getting a Foil because it is lighter in weight, is rubber instead of fiberglass, and gives enough thrust for mermaiding. Cheers, suzanne86, Arizona.
