Start-up business/military advice

I've been reading through these forums like crazy. I'm hoping to get through all 20 pages of the Professional Mermaiding forum, but for now I'm just on page 12.

I'm looking for advice and opinions. After reading through so many topics and reading Raina's book, I really feel this is a path I want to go down.

While I'm still working on my Mersona, I am trying to figure out how to start my business or how I should start it.

Right now I'm living in Japan on a military base. If any Mers have preformed on military bases PLEASE contact me I have SO many questions. Anyway aside from the language barrier (I am learning but just the basics) I also run into the big problem of base policies (they are on the best days, strict and unyeilding).

I'm still going to try and see what I can and can't do here, but for the most part I have resigned myself to spend my time training, perfecting, and learning.I know famous Mers have preformed in Japan, but I'm just a noob without a tail yet.

My main question is should I start doing things to start up my business? What kind of things? Things I'm already doing are:

training, with fins, without fins
learning about running a business
tracking expenses
creating a mersona
thinking about the kind of gigs I want to do


Another thing is my husband is military, which means lots of moving for me. I don't mind and I thought it could be one of my things that makes me special as a mermaid (travelling Mer), but I know that everytime I move to a new place, I'll have to start my business clientele in that area from scratch. I don't think it would be a bad thing, but any advice or opinions is much appreciated.

Also, I would suggest buying Raina's book "Fishy Business: How to Be A Mermaid" (makemeamermaid.com) because I bought it and I read it cover to cover and it's awesome, and a great resource for starting a business.

I would highly recommend you get a tail before you try to start a business. You need to practice with it before you can start selling yourself as a merperson, just saying. I think you're on a good track so far, but be patient-- starting any business is not going to happen overnight, so don't be upset if your mermaiding business doesn't come all at once.

After going through all of that (I also finished her Vlog series) I've decided some of the answers I'm looking for don't exist yet. Mainly military ones. And I have figured a lot of stuff out on my own. I'll get there eventually...hahahaha

It depends on your military branch, but if you're looking to do professional mermaid things on base, try contacting your base Chaplain, Human Performance Team, or your branch's equivalent of the Airmen Ministry Center. These places often put on events where I could see a mermaid being a part of some. (Heck, they hire Santas and Easter Bunny's.)
