:> Thanks guys.

Holy crap it's awesome! I like that it's kinda floppy, but it looks like you get good propulsion from it.

Funny thing is, there are no straps on my monofin, so I had to swim very slowly to keep the fin on across the pool. (The tightness of the tail will hold my feet inside the monofin later on.) With the straps on, I can FLY in this monofin.

AHHH, I feel so bad for neglecting this poor board!

Unfortunately, I've been dealing with a boat load of illness stuff and it's making tail work very difficult. I am working on it, but it's making everything take a SUPER long time. -.- Ugh. I don't want to make excuses or anything for taking so long, but I thought you all should know that this project is still alive, it's just sort of limping at the moment. XD And yes, my family, the doctors, and I have started making progress. I have an endoscopy scheduled for next week, and that should hopefully reveal the problems.

Anyways, I love you all so much and thank you ALL for the amazingly sweet encouragement! You really have made this process more awesome. -hugs-

Aw that sucks Lorelei. I have been dealing with some medical issues myself, just got diagnosed with Crohn's disease. I hope that whatever it is you are dealing with now is nothing too serious. If you have anything like me it really does take a lot out of you. Take your time and we will be anxiously waiting your progress!

Leeloo- I think we might have solved one of the major issues today. It's a lovely situation with my gallbladder. O.o; But I least there are things I can do to help it.

Good to hear they are figuring out what is wrong. My mom kept asking me when I started with these problems and going to the hospital, "are you sure its not your gallbladder?" lol. At least with gallbladder issues they are normally easily fixable. Good luck!

Okay, so I know it's been a couple months since the last time I posted anything on here and I want to apologize to all of you for that. For those of you who don't know, I've been dealing with a list of health problems and college this last year and it's taken up all of my tail time. Today I can finally say that after multiple surgeries, countless doctor visits, and many days spent sick in bed, I feel good again. I have been working on my tail again, thinking of new mermaidy ideas, and even doing a bit of jewelry again. Yay.

In all, don't be surprised if it's still a little while before I post any major progress, but progress I am finally making. It's all up from here. :3

Thank you guys. :>

By the way, while I was sick and unable to work on my tail I did make some progress on some different projects. I now have molds for different starfish (including one MASSIVE starfish that's about a foot wide) as well as molds for different sizes of shells. I am taking custom orders on silicone sea life now if anyone is interested. :P The orders are helping to cover the costs of my tail, which has been very helpful.

And, for those curious, my birthday is the 6th of January and I'm going to be 21! Woo! Can't wait!

How much are you selling the silicone starfish/shells for?

Happy Upcoming Birthday!
How much are you selling the silicone starfish/shells for?

Thanks!
The price depends on the size of the items. If you're hoping for small shells or starfish, they are $15 dollars for two. The larger starfish and shells are $20 a piece. :3 I also have a mold for a massive starfish that is seriously about a foot wide and it's $45 dollars.

Your progress is fantastic!! :D Its going to be such a beautiful tail <3 I hope you are feeling 100% soon too!

I have a dumb question however (sorry! ><;) I know you pigmented the colour into the tail, but is it still possible to paint 'highlights' or details onto the silicone? In my mind I feel it would be similar to latex- just mix silicone with the paint pigments and air-brush them on, but I am not sure... I've been wondering that for a while! XD <3

Mermaid Lorelei
01-03-2013, 01:16 AM
Thank you Mizuko. :>
And your question is not dumb. I don't believe in dumb questions. At least not usually... Anyways, yes, it is very possible. You simply mix them with your silicone. You do need to be careful about adding too much pigment because it can cause the silicone to stay uncured. If you need a really light color, I suggest thin layers so that your silicone will set properly. :3

Mizuko

Thank you very much! :D I am thinking about undertaking my own silicone tail project, but I want to know I've got all the information I could possibly have- so that I dont screw up ^^; haha! You've been a huge inspiration for me!! I hope I can have the patience to do it. :D

You make me so happy Spindrift. <3

And just for you, here are some fun progress photos.
http://i48.tinypic.com/25p1d1k.jpg
It's so freaking hot here (above 100 F) that we just went ahead and moved inside. :P

http://i47.tinypic.com/303efew.jpg
You can get a feel for just how big this thing is. It's not acurate to the exact shape, because there is space for re-enforcement of the mold, but the fluke really does reach to every edge of this board.

http://i50.tinypic.com/33z5quh.jpg
Yes, that is a full foot ruler. I think I posted the full measurements somewhere on mernetwork, but it was something like 3ft by 3ft with a huge cut out of space in the center. (modeled by the cut on the monofin.)

So yup. Progress!

I apologize if this was already answered, but the mold the tail is curing in, what is it made of? Was it just a latex or something that turned rock hard after it cured?

This looks fantastic btw. ;)

Mermaid Lorelei
01-22-2013, 04:26 PM

The material I used is actually a type of plastic/urethane material that sets up hard as a rock. It's called Shell Shock Liquid Plastic.

Hey Mermaid Lorelei, you & I have talked a bit about silicone tails. I'm at this point now. I'm nearly done with the big seam on the large scale sheet & did "glueing" of the fluke halves today. Ugh, the seams are the hardest part! After this is seaming the fluke to the bodice (scale sheet)! @.@ Must per.. sev.. ere..

It is simply amazing! Please tell me how much you needed to silicone? Sorry for my english ((:(
Don't worry about it. :3 I'm not actually sure how much silicone my tail needed because I was using the same silicone to make other things at the same time. If I had to guess, I'd say I used about 1 1/2 orders of the gallon size dragonskin silicone.

It's gorgeous! I wonder whether you would consider becoming a tailmaker (well, selling them :D )
I'm very tempted to make and sell tails as a tailmaker, but I have a LOT of testing to do before I'll be confident in sending out a tail.

So, I went swimming in my tail this morning. Before I even got in the water the seam at my waist split. -cries- I know why it did, and it's not too difficult to fix, but still. It was my first swim and I couldn't do much more than flop down the lane. At least no one was filming.

Wowwww, the teaser image of you in your tail is SO EXCITING!!! Your dedication and commitment to detail has paid off. Wow!!!

I'm really curious what brand of pigment you used?
I have ordered my Dragonskin, and want to make sure I get a brand that is compatible with platinum silicone. I thought I might get lucky and find some at the local arts store (Jacquard brand pigments maybe?) instead of ordering the Silc Pig pigments from Smooth On, but I am worried the Jacquard or more any old paint pigment "just won't do" or have some hidden property in them that will cause curing problems.
Thank you!!! <3

I am so sorry this happened to you. If it makes you feel any better, know that I had a leather skirt to split at the butt like that when in public once. Make it one size larger maybe by adding a zipper. Since yours split at the waist, maybe use a skin colored "latex waist cincher" (available on ebay)with it and cover it with a loose net to camouflage it. Order a "latex waist cincher" 6 inches too small for your current waist and it will pull you in nicely. These latex waist cinchers can actually spot reduce the fat in your tummy while tightening and toning the muscles if you apply a "thermal fat cream" to the belly before you put it on.

I will get one today myself off of ebay in prep for my upcoming mermaid tail!:)

Mermaid Lorelei
06-23-2013, 01:28 AM
Well, it's not actually a problem with the sizing. I measured correctly and don't have much width on my stomach to lose. Thank you though.

Cordelia
06-23-2013, 03:10 AM
Hmm... not too sure about the latex mixing with the silicon tail either - if it touches. Plus it would probably make it difficult to swim in.

I wonder if scoring the silicon on each side before bonding would help make a stronger hold. Good luck!! I hope you are able to find a relatively easy solution. ^^

Mermaid Oshun
06-23-2013, 04:48 AM
latex and silicone can be beside each other once they are both completely cured/dried.

AniaR
06-23-2013, 10:05 AM
latex + silicone do NOT mix. My smaller tail has latex on it (perma wet) and it peels off, and means I can't repaint is for touchups, because the paint wont bond on top of the latex :/

Mermaid Oshun

Mermaid Lorelei
06-24-2013, 01:47 AM
Thank you guys for your input.

Basically, yes, latex and silicone hate each other. Once silicone is cured, it won't melt or anything like that if it comes in contact with latex. However, latex will not bond to silicone permanently, in the case of perma-wet, or something like that. The only thing that sticks to silicone is silicone. However, latex can affect the ability for silicone to bond properly to silicone after the fact, such as Raina's case with her smaller tail. Over all, I just steer clear of latex wherever I can. If nothing else, I'd rather not gain an allergy from the stuff.

Cordellia - I've actually found a solution, but your idea is a good one. I might look into trying it sometime. :3

MerCat

Hi Lorelei! I'm starting a silicone tail of my own, i've got most of the little stuff done (laying foam for scales, trimming my mono fin) I have yet to buy shellshock and dragonskin FX pro. I think the hardest part for me is figuring out how to do the seams and how to hold the tail together until it cures. If you have any advice at all I'd be more than willing to listen! :3

Hi Lorelei:) I just wanted to ask, for your final paint job did use the psycho paint base from smooth on with the silicone pigments or a different type of paint?

Mermaid Lorelei
06-27-2013, 03:32 PM
The psycho paint base is basically just more dragonskin, so no, I did not use it.

MerCat
06-27-2013, 03:42 PM
I was reading somewhere that the Psychopaint was just a waste of money b/c it is, like you said lorelei, just more dragonskin....I mean, if ya have the funds you can get it but it's just a waste ;P I think when I come to the point of painting my silicone tail I will just use dragonskin and put the pigments in there. Also, have you seen the shimmer powder they have from smooth-on? It's absolutely stunning!

The seam is back together! -happy dance- I'm about to paint it, but I couldn't help myself from going for a swim. Whenever kids asked about the patches and strange colors, I told them that I was shedding and about to change colors. :P
This is beautiful! And may I ask, who's the tail behind you? ;)

Yup, that's me :) We went swimming again today, and as soon as my husband edits the pictures (he won't let me touch them :P ) then I will post them on Facebook and probably here as well (or Lorelei will).

Alright, update time.

As most of you know, my tail has been one of those journeys that goes and goes and just doesn't seem to stop. It's been over a year and a half and I'm still working on my tail. Is this bad? No. It just means it's taken me forever to learn, practice, and perfect different techniques that are necessary to make a working tail. Some of you have asked if I will eventually be selling tails. I'd like to, but it won't be anytime soon. I'm not confident enough in my tail making abilities to try and sell anything just yet. I will be making another tail or two in the next year or so, and depending on how those go, I might look into selling. So keep your eyes open, but don't expect anything soon.

This will likely be the last time I post anything on this thread. I'll continue to answer questions and such, but if you want to follow me and my progress, I suggest liking my facebook page. It stays FAR more up to date than anything else. :P

To everyone who has been following me and giving praise, YOU ARE AMAZING! I can't tell you how many times I have stopped by this page when I'm feeling less than motivated only to find a slew of helpful comments and assurances. So yeah, you guys are freaking awesome. Thank you!!

I'm working on making a silicone tail and I have a few questions...
1. what brand of paint can I use to paint dragon skin silicone?
2. is there other sites to buy dragon sink silicone other than from smooth on, possibly one that sells in bulk or cheaper?

To paint silicone you buy silicone pigment that you mix into the silicone, and use the silicone itself as paint. You can buy stuff called psycho paint which is made specifically for painting silicone, but it is expensive and pretty useless when you can just use more silicone mixed with silicone pigment.
As for other sites that sell Dragonskin silicone, you're just lucky you don't live in Australia where we have to buy it from a reseller at almost three times the price. Smooth on are the people that actually make the Dragonskin silicone, so buying directly from them will be cheapest.

You actually don't have to use special silicone only pigments. There are a couple of different threads on here that show people using anything from mica pigments to powders and makeup.

Also, for anyone curious, I've sold this tail and am in the process of getting a new one from Finfolk Productions. I'm still toying with the idea of making another tail, too, so don't worry. You'll see more from me eventually. <3

I did not make my tail out of latex. I used Dragonskin Silicone. Pearl Ex can work in silicone, but I don't know anything about latex.

Any clay that is sulfur free, most use Plastina clay by Van Aken which can be found at Hobby Lobby, or Craft Smart modling clay found at Michael's craft store.
You can't "paint" silicone, you mix colored pigments in with the silicone and "paint" a one or two layers of the colored silicone onto the silicone. silicone only sticks/adheres to silicone.

Um....instead of necroposting, next time just try either reading the thread (the horror!) or sending a private message to ask the question. This information is literally all over the forum.....just fyi.

I have no desire to sound rude, but you can quickly skim this thread to find the answers, as well as other threads on the forum. If you're planning on making a silicone tail, you need to be willing to do some leg work and research.

Tagging on to what you said to add especially when this thread is four years old. Lorelei doesn't even own this tail anymore (if my memory serves me right Mermaid Merin and her mermaid crew bought it a while back). That's how old this thread is :P . If you don't find the information you need skimming this thread alone, there are many other tail-making threads that you can skim (or find a more recent tail-making thread and ask there) :)
