I've posted around the thread a few times that I love wearing corsets, now I'm wondering, are there any other mers who love corsets also? or who waist train? What's your goal? dream corset? do you make your own corsets?
I'm planning on making one of my first corsets soon, because I found out that there is a slight curvature in my spine that made my last otr corset uncomfortable so I'm getting a medical corset maker to help me draft my own pattern for an asymetrical corset that won't be as uncomfortable as one for symmetrical bodies.

Gosh I want one. Unfortunately my fam is all against it and stuff so I have to wait till I can move out in a couple years. I don't really mean to waist train, just tight lace mostly. But I've been drooling over the OC 426 short for a while now. *dreamy sigh*

I love corsets myself. I'm into a lot of victorian goth type things so corsets are pretty much a must. I don't waist train though, my best friend does but not by much so far. I've wanted to make one myself too but haven't had the time. For me it's more of a fancy costume/outfit piece than a daily wear. There are a lot of misconceptions (as you said in the other thread) out there about them, even I haven't researched as much as I'd like on the subject.

Momo, that is a gorgeous corset! I made all my own corsets when I did Renaissance faires, but I never had the courage to make a Victorian corset. I have a beautiful hooded one from Damsel in this Dress that I've sadly outgrown, but am keeping in the hopes I'll fit it again someday.
My next corset is going to be a postpartum girdle. I need some help getting my abdomen tightened back up.

I have a corset, but it's a ltitle to long, so it's poking in my armpits or stabbing in my legs :( It fitted perfectly when I was standing when I bought it, even got advice from the nice lady at the stand. I love the feel of it, but I do not waist train, just like it to be tight. My dad promised me to help get me a good one as he knew someone who makes them to fit your body, but it hasn't happened yet.
I did make my own corset once, because it has a special shape and a trail at the backside. Sadly the boning I used were way to soft which ended up in wringles instead of a nice smooth line :(

I've been wearing corsets on and off since college! Right now I have... ummm... too many to my name. I'll scour my digital albums and see if I can find any decent pics to put up. I do not waist train.

As a burlesque performer, corsets kinda come with the territory. And I love them! I have one custom made corset specific for my measurements and I loved it to death! It's falling apart now after MANY uses and my seamstress is currently travelling. So for now I'm making due with a 'costume' corset. It's pretty, but I can't lace it as tight and it pokes me in the back a bit. I may have to see if I can fix up my custom one until I can get a couple of new ones made.
I don't waist train or anything, but I've considered it.

Momo you look fantastic in your corsets! I love wearing corsets also, and did some extensive corset training a few years ago. I just recently went and tried on a Hoss corset an oh my they are wonderful. They got me into a 34 and I have to say I looked great! I normally have a 40 inch waist, so to see myself in a 34 was quite amazing!
Currently I own 4 corsets, one of them is custom, although I am not completely thrilled with it. I have a purple and black leather underbust that I LOVE. I am hoping to get the Hoss corset that I tried on sometime soon. The great thing about Hoss' corsets is the boning that he uses, its a flexible steel, but not the spiral steel boning. It was so flexible that I though there was no way it was going to pull me in. I even said that to the girl that was fitting me. So imagine my surprise when she pulled me in 6 inches. Also he uses a special lacing that makes it so easy to lace yourself in, great slippage! Honestly, the best corset I have ever put on and off the rack to boot.
I love corsets and I have been looking at buying a really nice one soon! My family already thinks I am weird so wearing a corset isn't going to change that! I want to do waist training. It is really cool to hear that there are other people here who wear corsets! :)
I love corsets, I've only got a few though. Got a nice custom which is what I'm wearing in my avatar actually. I also want to get some corsets to do reenactment. So I may look into making them.

i have an odd question but i am not sure what i should google to find the answer? my friend and i are thinking about waist training, but wondering if it is possible to train in a specific spot? like, obviously the focus is usually the curve of a person, the rib area, but i was wondering if it was possible that maybe to slowly train only the bottom part? like maybe only tighten the lower part of the corset while keeping the rest rather loose? is that a thing?
(is this the wrong thread to ask this? i am sorry if it is, i didn't see a more appropriate thread but maybe i missed it? if someone knows the name of it and would be ok telling me i will delete this and put it in the correct one.)

I don't do waist training but I have five steel boned ones that I will wear at conventions and renaissance faires. Two of them go from the nape of my neck to my hips in the back, and I have, in fact, taught myself to lace myself in. Takes some work, but i can manage. For the other three, one is an underbust and the other two are overbust. My girls are a tad big, so one of the overbust ones is actually a size larger than my others, just so my boobs don't go and escape. I don't have any custom made ones, but I want one someday! I can't post pics on here, it has something to do with how my computer files things or something, but mine are each a different color. I count the underbust one as green, even though it's reversible green and blue.

Do you mean only cinch in at the upper hip? or at the waist? Because corsets actually don't cinch in at the ribs but at the natural waist, corsets that pull the ribs in also are of a special shape called conical which pulls in the floating ribs also.

Basically from my understanding, when you're waist training you are training your waist to go smaller and smaller (so like when you start out with a certain sized corset and you want to get your waist down to a certain size/ fit into a certain sized corset) I could be wrong tho because I always get waist training and tightlacing mixed up since to me they're just the same thing.

I love my corset. I'm planning on getting more soon. From my understanding the differece between tight lacing and waist training is that tight lacing may be done for short periods of time for a temporary desired effect. This might be for a costume or some other desired reason. Waist training is more long term and involves slowly cinching tighter over a longer period of time to achieve a more sustainable effect.
Where tight lacing and waist training can occur at the same time, they don't always. I cinch down to 28-29 inches regularly to wais train (unlaced I am about 30 inches), but if I really yanked I could get to 26 inches, though not comfortably.
Also, as for "target training" it isn't really recommended to cinch one area tighter than any other. Ideally the gap in the back (or sometimes front) is parallel all the way down. It can be kind of hard. I'm the slightest bit more pear than hourglass, so I gravitated toward closing the gap at the top and having a 1-2 inch gap at the bottom before I figured it out. Uneven lacing puts unnecessary stress on bones and laces, which causes wear and sometimes warping.

Whilst I don't specifically wear corsets yet I'm very eager to get into them. Mizuko has been so helpful answering all my annoying questions and directed me to the most helpful site EVER and I'm hoping to buy one from them eventually. It probably wouldn't be an every day thing, but just something to wear under cosplays or fancy outfits to make me look a little slimmer :)

I had that problem too! Sadly I didn't notice it until my corset was warped beyond saving (also, my corset was apparently patterned wrong? because the busk was so freaking lopsided and the corset pressed on one side of my hips more than the other side so as I started to lace tighter, it started to hurt from the pressure)
I can only get a few inches down :( because I don't have any squish at all (24 in natural waist and very athletic build) and the problem with being pear shaped, no otr corset can fit me correctly for a good cinch that's also comfortable and custom is waaay out of my price range at the moment.
Mermaid Miranda
10-06-2015, 06:57 PM
I think one of my hips is higher than the other, which always ends up making my busk a little lopsided. I've heard getting adjusted by a chiropractor can help with more minor issues, but for bigger problems or spine curvature custom pattern is definitely the way to go. I'm lucky that my pear is super small, only a few inches difference top to bottom, so o.t.r. corsets will do for me. I'm too cheap for a custom one at the moment.
Random side note...anyone thought of adapting a corset for mermaiding? Definitely plastic bones, but could it be feasible?

So y'all have introduced me to lovelyrats. And now I want one or fifty. Holy Narwhal but they are beautiful. My OrchardCorset is a very lovely white satin but compared to some of these it's just sad (https://www.orchardcorset.com/corsets/steel-boned-overbust-satin-corset-cs-530/.). Although I have ideas on flossing it sometime in the not to distant future. Maybe I can figure out some way to do mermaid-y flossing...
I got mine from OrchardCorset. LOVE it! From what I've seen their stuff is good quality but standard sizing. They have a blog, too, which gives you all sorts of tips and has profiles of people who wear corsets and stuff, so if you're a total beginner to corseting it's a great place to get some advice.
I think next time I'll have to get one with hip ties...

hmm, I don't think they'll make it that much harder unless you're doing something like a back flip or a general flip or turn that requires your spine to twist a lot. Though your dolphin kick will look a bit more stiff since you don't have full range of spinal movement as usual.

I don't think I would suggest a corset for a gig with a lot of swimming. Photo shoots, dry gigs, kiddie pool stuff, that sounds fine to me but I know corsets aren't usually considered safe while working out, and I don't think you can do a very graceful dolphin kick in them. I think it would be a safety hazard. Maybe a costume corset with acrylic boning for pool gigs? And THOSE GEM CORSETS!!!!! I need the Pearl one.

Triton knows I made the mistake of trying to switch between running shoes and ballroom dance pumps that buckle in a corset. So lucky I didn't break a bone.
As for pants I've learned to pull them halfway up, then corset, then pants the rest of the way. I almost always stealth my corset, though.
Do you ladies prefer wearing corsets underneath your clothing or flaunt gorgeous decorative ones on top? I have a relative who rocks simple corsets as a statement piece :)

I do not wear corsets and I don't have a problem with them at all. However, I do have a bit of a problem with this "waist training". This is a trend I'm seeing becoming more and more popular and I feel that it is promoting unnatural beauty standards. Those of you who are waist training, how do you feel about this?
I've heard that it is extremely damaging body and bone-wise as well, but of course this was just through the internet that I found this. Maybe it only occurs in growing bodies? In any case I worry because rib damage can impair swimming and respiratory abilities. However, I am interested in the practice itself!
saborigakusei
10-07-2015, 09:18 AM
I don't and probably won't waist train but I personally have no problems with it. :) I think it just needs to be understood that those who waist train do so because they like the way they look and NOT to fit society's beauty standards, to be pleasing to men, or other damaging reasons like that.
I personally believe that corset trained waists should not be looked at in any way as a normal aesthetic. It is an extreme and I think that when people start accepting these extremes as normal that it is damaging to women without an hourglass figure, who start to wonder why they aren't normal/attractive when they actually are. If that makes sense.
All the waist trainer's I've seen seem to do it because they love it, not to put down other body types or anything like that.
I probably won't ever use it to try and permanently alter my waist size, but I love love love wearing corsets and encourage all who love them to do so! ^^

If you are informed and careful in waist training practice, there should be NO damage to the body. Including ribs and internal organs. One of the most common things I heard when doin my research is that if somethin hurts or you are having trouble breathing something is wrong and the corset should come off right away. The point of waist training is to go slowly so your body can acclimate to the changes and if you think about how much and how quickly a female body changes to accommodate pregnancy, it isn't that weird.
I started, actually, with a Lycra girdle with four bones to help smooth things out under a formal dress. I loved how it made me feel, all tucked in and kind of like I was wearing armor. Then I had a few costume corsets from Fredricks and, while they are fun for short term, they are in no way meant for waist training. The bones are plastic, there is only one layer of fabric, and frankly if I wear it longer than an hour or two it starts to feel off.
In my OC, I wear it tight enough that I feel comfortable and maybe a 1/16 of an inch tighter. I can still eat, still move, still breathe. If I wear it for a long time it starts to chafe against my hips and that is usually when I take it off. It should only move your floating ribs, the ones at the very bottom, and again very slowly.
In my mind it is like any other form of body modification. Like tattoos or piercings or dying your hair. It's like braces.
i do this for me, not for anyone else. I have no desire to have some reidiculous 16 inch waist. I'm stopping at 26 and considering how squishy I am, I'm nearly there even with a 30 inch uncorseted waist.
it isn't necessarily for everybody and some people will take it to an extreme, but I found that even during the Victorian era, when people were going crazy about tiny waists there are very few extant dresses that measure fewer than 20 inches. Many are more in the 24-26 inch range. They were just really good at making your hips and shoulders look bigger so your waist appeared tiny by comparison.

Corsets create an hourglass shape yes but corsets are not contributing to our society's obsession with female beauty standards. If anything they challenge them. Corsets are not mainstream.
Handle the media's portrayal of "ideal women" and the rest will follow. Like how I thought I was fat and therefore "ugly" at ten because children are played by teens and teens are played by adults in most tv shows. Hint: I didn't have hips at ten.
Who cares what body mods other people are doing?
As a very socially conscious feminist, I think corsets are an empowering article of clothing for women (and men) and I think the widespread use is if anything a symptom of media and societal pressure and not of corsets existing.

Lovelyrats does do amazing work. I absolutely love her work.
Has anyone here continuously made the mistake of putting on corset before pants/ shoes? Because I know I do a lot
I do this all the time! Mostly with my boots as I don't wear pants really unless I am at work. You would think after 5 years I would remember to lace the heels up first and then cinch but nope.
Do you ladies prefer wearing corsets underneath your clothing or flaunt gorgeous decorative ones on top? I have a relative who rocks simple corsets as a statement piece :)
I do a bit of both but usually I wear my corsets over my clothes as I have designed and made most of my clothes to be worn that way.

I usually wear my corsets over my clothes, unless I am waist training, thus wearing it to work, at work I wear them under my clothes.
As far as corsets lending to unnatural beauty standards, I actually waist train, not to become thinner, but to change the shape of my body. I do not have a waistline and I do not have hips. I have an inverted triangle body, or an apple. I like the look of having curves, hips and a waist, that is why I like to wear corsets. I love the vintage look of pinup girls of the 40's and 50's, back when women rocked their curves. That is the look that I like to go for when I am wearing a corset. I have not waist trained for a few years, because honestly, its not the easiest thing to do, but I do still love to wear my corsets when I want to appear more curvy, or when it just completes my outfit perfectly.

I saw some beautiful corsets at a local con a year ago but unfortunately they had already sold the ones in my size. :(
I am interested in corsets just because I think they are so beautiful. I want one to wear over clothes. I definitely could benefit from it supporting my back when I am working several hours at the computer on graphic design work.
This has been a great topic to read! :)

How did I miss this? I adore corsets! I do not waist train, but I love wearing them. The touch of them and the sensation of being hugged is the best in the clothing-wearing world.
I currently have 7, two underbusts, and the rest are overbusts. They come mostly from OC and Corsets UK (a subsidiary of Corset Story). My two steampunk corsets are my favorites.

I do not wear corsets and I don't have a problem with them at all. However, I do have a bit of a problem with this "waist training". This is a trend I'm seeing becoming more and more popular and I feel that it is promoting unnatural beauty standards. Those of you who are waist training, how do you feel about this?
I feel no different than when a person wants to have tattoos or bigger holes in the ears. Waist training is a type of body modification, and people do it because they want to. I would not have a tattoo because it is not my thing, but if another person wants one, who am I to say anything? It is their body. Same thing with waist training.
And it may be trendy, but all the articles I have seen on the issue is basically the reporter putting on a corset, lacing it as tight as she possible can and then dropping the experiment 3 days later saying she can't understand how people do it. If they are doing it wrong to begin with, how can they possibly understand?
I think people who genuinelly like corsets approach them knowing what to do, what to expect and how to wear them safely and without risks. People wanting corsets because the Kardashians wear them will drop them fast, same as the journalists. Corseting requires patience, time, dedication and also money.

And not to mention those who get corsets because they see famous people wearing them, need to realize that they aren't wearing real corsets, they're wearing shape wear (which in my opinion feels like I'm stuffed into a sausage tube) and not only will that not give them any reduction like a corset will, but if they do go and get something resembling a corset, they usually by the cheap plastic boned fashion corsets that aren't meant for cinching, or they get a steel boned one, in the wrong size, and as soon as they put it on they lace it down as tightly as possible because they didn't do their research on it beforehand.

measure your underbust measurement, your skeletal waist (which is where your waist bends at when you bend to the side) and your high hip, add lower hip too if you are looking at a long line. From there it is recommended generally to go about 4 inches smaller than your natural waist measurement. However you need to take into account the other measurements as not every maker has the same rib and hip springs in their corsets. Lucy from Lucy Corsetry has an amazing data base on her website where you can look up just about any corset model from any maker and it will give you the known rib and hip springs so that you can make sure your corset will fit you comfortably as you cinch it down over time.

haha, to season it you just lace down for 30 min/day (or what I did was I laced down for 30 minutes then tightened it and wore it for another 30 minutes before taking it off) and when you lace down, make sure it's not too tight, but snug, like a firm hug.
Here's a nice video about it:

Finally decided to respond here yay! I have a steel boned! I got it about a year ago and wanted to do light waist training with it but it was always so hard to lace myself I guess I kind of gave up *hangs head in shame*
But I really want to start using it again. It's from corset story, white with black lace overlay and satin ruffle trim. The only issue is in one of the boning channels that sits on my right front side, there's a little piece of -something- in there that after a while feels really painful when I wear the corset (almost feels like a tiny pebble that got trapped) so I would have to clip the fabric on the channel enough to get it out. Shouldn't be too hard though. Any advice for starting out with a corset when you have to lace yourself?

Is it your first corset? for firsts I'd suggest an OTR because you might not know if corsetting is for you and why spend all that money for a custom just to find that out? Do you know your measurements? (also most customs tend to be $100+ at the moment, and that's for a waspie so if you want something longer than a waspie like and underbust I've seen prices starting at $200)

I have an OTR I bought from Amazon that I believe is plastic boning. I bought it for a costume I am working on. Most an over bust and pretty freaking uncomfortable. I actually bought a large thinking it would fit and I had to LaCie so loosely the modest panel in the back didn't even cover the whole laces. It was more expensive to ship it back for an exchange so I just bought a second XL. I want an underbust to start gentle wrist training.
I measured this morning and I believe I was a 42ish hips and a 36ish waist.

I corset! Not as often as I'd like to but I'm contemplating getting back into some gentle waist training this winter because chilly weather is so perfect for wearing an extra layer (& easy to hide under thick, cozy sweaters!).
For me, corseting is all about the support and smooth line it gives. Put on a corset and boom, anything else you wear looks amazingly better, and quite often feels more comfortable, because you have such perfect posture. I use underbust corsets because I love the ability to use whatever bra I want, especially strapless, and the figure it creates is classy yet modern. I'm super fortunate to be flexible enough to lace myself in (I've never had help getting into my corsets), and even complete tasks like putting on my shoes afterwards, haha.
In my opinion "waist training" is very gentle, gradual reduction of your natural figure. It is not extreme unless you do it for so long that you get down into wasp-waisted measurements. Personally that's not my thing, but if someone is doing it correctly and not interfering with their body's function, whatever. "Tight-lacing" brings to mind the lace-down-as-much-as-you-can-stand for a temporary look, and certainly has the potential to be harmful if done incorrectly.
I think it's very sad that corseting gets such a bad rap when it's misunderstood. Yes, you have to know what you're doing, same as every other "advanced" hobby. Nowadays you need to do your research and make sure you're buying a quality piece. You need to be patient. Really, when corseting is done correctly there should only be health benefits, never harm. I tend to be more alert and energetic, thanks to the enforced good posture. Even laced my tightest I've never had issues with singing (deep breathing!) or eating as much as I wanted. And while a proper steel-boned corset is definitely not your friend during most workouts, I have worn them during general work and heavy lifting (boxes, etc), and all it made me do was lift with my legs exactly as I should have been doing anyway. Plus I could rest things against my busk without my ribs being crushed! It really is like wearing secret armor through the day.
I'm a small person and I don't have much "squish", so I don't get a lot of reduction from my corsets, but honestly that's not what I want, so I'm kind of happy that my OTR corsets work for me without letting me go "too far". 4 years ago & pre-baby I could lace down to 22-23", and I could tell that my waist could have gone smaller, but my hips and ribs were preventing the corset from going smaller. I was okay with that because it would have been even harder to find (and make) clothes that fit. Now I've lost my baby-weight but my tummy is not the same as it was... it's time to start training again, haha.
4 years ago I was actually waist-training for my wedding, and then, a week before my wedding, I came down with chicken pox. Yeah. Corset not happening. Nothing from my original wedding dress plans happening!! (ended up getting married barefoot, though, which is kind of awesome in itself) So, I fell away from the waist-training, just started getting back into it, and got pregnant, so my body started it's own 9-month waist training program, lol. I wish I could have jumped right back into waist-training after pregnancy, I'm sure it would have helped my figure, but I just didn't see how it would have worked with nursing a newborn. (Fine silken undergarments they care not about.) Now it's just a matter of finding the time to lace up during the morning. Ugh. ...So I've gotten into mermaiding to help my midsection, yay!!
Due to life's surprises, I have two gorgeous unused Timeless Trends brand corsets up for grabs. Both are standard-length underbust, one is size 20 (pewter satin) and the other a 24 ("ice metal" fashion silk fabric). (They are not the brand-new curvy style corsets from TT, obviously) I'm hoping to get close to what I paid for them, and I really want them to go to a home where they'll be used and appreciated properly. Please send me a message if you're interested. Thank-you!!
I don't think I've heard anyone else mention Timeless Trends in this thread. I loved seeing the videos that Lucy (of the YouTube channel) posted recently, when she got to go to their factory and help design the new corset patterns! It made me feel good about continuing to support and recommend them. They do high-quality OTR peices and have a huge variety! Their selection just keeps improving. Anyone else have experience with them? =)

day 5 of seasoning and i thought i would show you all the difference I can see from day 1 to now. The ribs are rounding out, the hips are forming over my hips, and the wrinkles and gaps (especially the rib gap) are getting less obvious. These are both laced down 2 inches to 28. So yeah... seasoning makes a difference.

I was wondering something.....i have a really really bad posture.
I sort of hunch a lot, i don't ever sit up straight. I was never told to sit up straight by my parents and am completly into the habit of sitting with a rounded back like a hunchback almost.
My neck is not up straight either.
I know it is much better to sit up straight, i have a lot of back problems, lot of pain in my back as well and my neck.
Could a corset help me with my posture? Will it help me to sit up straight more and train that?

I tie my corset depending on what I'm wearing and what I'm doing (day @ home vs. quick outing). I think it's good to have them tied conveniently, so long as nothing is being strained!

It definitely will make a difference and if you wear it regularly, on the days you don't wear it you'll automatically sit and stand straighter. It becomes a habit. So yes, do your research and try one out! Start out slow, but stick with it. Your spine will thank you down the road.

I bought a plastic boned over its corset on Amazon for a costume awhile ago and o tried it and I thought it was too small. So I ordered the next size up. Well now that I've watched a bunch of videos and done more researching, I found the smaller one is still to big. Probably good for a costume so I can move and do athletics in it but definitely not good for training.
But I wore I all day today and it felt good. My posture was great and I was really focused on my breathing because I could feel it. I can't wait to get my steel ones!!!

Absolutely! It forces you into a good posture while wearing it. A lot of people talk about it helping their posture after they start wearing it.

It will make a huge difference for you. I was a classically trained ballet dancer for 14 years, but ended up with some injuries that ruined my dancing career. Not to mention developing some chronic health issues. When I stopped and was always in pain i started curling up into a ball. It destroyed all those years of amazing posture over time. I just got used to be hunched over from exhaustion or pain.
However 5 years ago when I started corseting I regained all my posture both when wearing them and not because it makes you so incredibly hyper aware of what your body is doing and how you hold yourself. It really teaches you to move in an entirely different way.

I danced classical ballet for years as well but even there my posture was not great and my teacher never told or taught me how to get it better :-(
I think a corset will make such a huge difference for my back!

So I'm wearing my cheapo corset I bought off amazon for a costume. I thought it was too small because I couldn't lace it so I got a larger size. Now that I know how to lace and what I'm looking for, I realize it's way too big.
But it has plastic boning and the material isn't great but I am wearing it to just get used to the feeling and to remind myself to breath, since I can feel every breath better. I am saving up for two from OC that I really love.

that's the thing that really gets on my nerves! how they steal designs from indie designers, and even use the designer's photos! to sell the designs for a lot cheaper than what the designer is selling for.
I'm gonna go see if I can find those links now, I remember seeing one of a girl who bought a CS and had a bone stab her in the side and break skin, and so she took the corset a part and all the bones were rusted.

One day, when I get down to 16 inches, I'm going to sacrifice myself to science and get a corset from all the places it's advised not to haha, so I can make a comparison of them all.
Can I also say how jealous I am of people with more squish because they can get shapes like this:

I have been busy with the Dickens Fair so have not been reading this thread in full. If it has not been mentioned the absolute best corsets come from http://www.darkgarden.com/
I would consider these the Merbella of corsets. A custom Dark Garden will cost about the same as the better part of a silicone tail. The wait times are not quite as long.
I have one myself so may be a bit biased. I use my corset every weekend during the fair. I have also known the proprietress for close to 30 years. My first corset came from her predecessor and mentor. That corset lasted me 20 or more years. My current corset I have had for the last 5.
While there is a year round walk in shop in San Francisco, Dark Garden also has a pop up shop at the Dickens Fair, that features live models in the windows. A new model every hour or so. It is always a treat to see what new themes that the participants come up with. I am sure there will be mermaid themes this year as well. We also have a Mermaid themed bar, called "The Mermaid." No live mermaids that I have seen, but we do have an amazing Mermaid statue by Arlin Robbins, to grace the front of it. If I was not participating in the fair this year, I would suggest a meet up. Of course of one of the other California or west coast mers wanted to organize a meetup ...

Dark Garden does do absolutely amazing work, but I feel it is a bit limiting to say the are THE Merbellas of corsets is a bit of a pigeon hole. There are luckily several custom corset makers out there that put out truly stunning and lasting pieces, such as Lovely Rats for example. I know there are others but off the top of my head that was just the maker that came to mind immediately. The trick is to really look around and pick the maker who best fits the style of corset you are after because they don't all make the same types. Whether it is conical ribs, wasp waist, historical, mesh, etc.

I haven't bought anything from Orchard Corsets. I'm going to have to read back and see how you all feel about quality. The prices are so low, I wondered about that. I also want to find out where they are made, and I haven't been able to.
My favorite corset ever is the one I'm wearing in this picture, and was made by the wonderful Gallery Serpentine (http://www.galleryserpentine.com/collections/corsets), in Australia. It's called the Spanish Harlot, and woe but they no longer make this corset. It's buskless, just has the lace up front, but I loved the shape it gave me. You'd see a little better had the flash not eradicated my bosom-line. :) This picture is at least 11 years old, but shows the corset well.
( I was walking to the dance floor and hence my arms look silly. haha)
I also used to have a great waist cincher, also steel boned, from GS. I recommend their entire line of corsets, they've been at it for over 10 years... maybe 15? And their items are wonderful.
I'm trying to decide right now between two wedding dresses, and one involves an overbust, and will be decorated with lace and crystals. If I go with that, I'll order from Vollers (http://www.vollers-corsets.com/) in the UK, and have the one with the covered busk, because I love the way it lays. A friend of mine has the same corset, it's so pretty and their quality is wonderful.

I asked for 2 different cheap corsets I found on Amazon for Christmas. I was feeling the packages when my parents weren't home and I *think* I feel a corset. I am not interested in waist training I just like the look of a corset as well as being able to make a not so interesting outfit look more interesting by wearing a corset. Anyways hopefully for Christmas I will get one or both of the corsets I asked for.
Maybe in the future I will get a nicer corset. :)

Mostly what the difference is between the mesh and say a cotton. Do they still offer the same support? I am looking to start corseting to help my posture and back pain but I worry the mesh will be unsupportive. Also, does it breathe better? If I am wearing it under my work uniform all day will I sweat as much as if I was wearing a solid fabric?
Deepblue, I was specifically referred to OC by someone who has been corseting for a long time and she said she only orders from OC. I also sent them an email to get advice on what style (I sent my measurements) and I heard back with in 24 hours with two styles that would work for me and why. They also have a ton of great informational videos on YouTube that are wonderful. They have really done their research and are a wonderful company from all of my experience so far and what I've heard from others.

I would say the difference in levels of support is very marginal. The mesh is a bit softer but with the boning and a proper fit the difference is not really to noticable.

The Mesh will definitely breath better. I originally purchased mine because I was working in a pizza place at the time and was near the oven and my cotton corsets were still to warm. The Mesh was hardly noticeable as far as adding to the heat and breathability of the fabrics I was wearing.

I have never had it rip or tear, it is just as durable as long as it is seasoned properly and given the normal care all corsets take. Just remember to wear a corset liner (it can be as simple as a tank top) under it to protect the corset from your body oils which can break down the fabric and cause the corsets life span to shorten over time. As far as how strong the mesh is. OC uses a very strong industrial strength mesh that is very durable, while still being soft to the touch.

That's common during seasoning, I remember when I first got mine, the gap between the modesty panel and the other side of the corset was like 3 inches then as I seasoned it it went down a lot. What size did you get? I think partly the large gap in mine was because I got a size 18 when I should have gotten a 20 or 19 (but they weren't in stock when I bought my corset)
If you got the right size, it may just need seasoning, but your hips may be too big too (mine are too big for my corset, But I can still get the corset to close, I just have a /\ shaped gap.)
Mermaid Momo
12-26-2015, 02:01 PM
I do! I think it's because I tend to "hip sit" a lot (where I pop out on hip to rest my legs) and that may have skewed my corset, but also I'm thinking there's a problem in the pattern because everyone else who bought the same corset I have in the same time all have problems with a skewed busk.
Mermaid Wesley
12-26-2015, 05:18 PM
I have to constantly adjust my busk because I'm a-symmetrical. It twists the corset sometimes. Now that it's seasoned it doesn't do it as much though.

Are there any corsets that could be worn as part of a mermaid costume while tailswimming? I've always thought that would look fantastic underwater
Saelyyia
12-26-2015, 06:20 PM
Realistically no because of the steel boning it would not be safe for you or the corset itself. Plus the restrictions to movement would hinder the dolphin kick. you would only be able to isolate the legs getting just a partial flow. Plus the steel would completely have to be sealed to keep them from rustying, you are likely to break down the fabric and seams very quickly and could seriously hurt your body.
theMerFanc
12-26-2015, 08:26 PM
That being said, if you are not looking to actually waist train, you could costume make a 'corset' with plastic boning that could look like a waist trainer, it just wouldn't give you the actual body shape. I purchased a corset from Amazon for about $11 (not it looks to be $17) and it is faux leather (but obviously you would need to have a different fabric) that is plastic boning. Its incredibly bendy, so it doesn't help with posture or anything and shouldn't restrict your movement (it doesn't restrict mine) but still look like what you want.

What shape were you looking for? It could just be as simple as the style of corset you are wearing. I went through something along those lines a few years back and ended up switched to a conical rib cage which in turn pulled in my floating ribs permanently and helped me get where I wanted to be.

I'm thinking its time to get a new corset then, Momo. I mean I dig the shape you have now, it seems to be on the edge of "good genes" and "what's going on here, Barbie" but if you want more extreme I think you'll need a new corset. Maybe custom even?

I agree with Wesley, in that case you should look into a new corset for a more dramatic silhouette.

Quick question folks. So one of the three corsets I bought from OC is the mesh fabric and it breathes really well. The only problem really is this;
I am seasoning all of my corsets at the same time. i am on day 5 of them all (3 hours). My natural waist is 31" and I was told to get 26" corsets. When I wear the red cotton one, I can barely get it down to 30" before it feel too tight. But thats ok because I'm seasoning. With the mesh (I am currently wearing it) I tightened it down to 29" and can barely feel it. Not only that but it's nearly entirely closed in the back. There is maybe three quarters of an inch left to close.
Someone here said they had a mesh and I was wondering if this experience has been similar to yours. It seems so much streatchier and not at all a 26" corset.
Saelyyia
01-06-2016, 02:38 PM
The Mesh does have some stretch do it. I find that because it is less restricting of a fabric I hardly even notice I am wearing it and that had originally concerned me when i got to the point of closing it. But the internal measurement was true to the size I had ordered. I think it is just because it has less structure to the fabric itself. (But I am most definitely no expert and these are just my guesses based on my experiences with my mesh CS-201) If you are concerned though you can always measure the waist tape both when it is not on and measure the internal measurement of the corset when it is on, while factoring in the size of the gap in the back to double check how it is fitting.

Yeah I was thinking it's my corset because I noticed a lot of OTR corsets also bring in the hips and ribs (My OC brings in my ribs to 24 inches which I'm guessing tones down the hourglass look I'm wanting since it's so close to the waist measurement.) and looking at my OC pattern I realized it's not really a very curvy pattern to start out with.
My corset pattern of the one I'm working on is hopefully keeping the hourglass I want because I made the measurements 32-18-36 with ub and hips being my natural measurements and made sure to pattern it with a dramatic curve.

I don't have a mesh but from what I hear, OC doesn't use actual corset making mesh so it has some stretch to it and seasons much faster and easier than others, but it also shouldn't be worn too much because it wears down a lot faster than a regular corset. I could be wrong though.

So the mesh corset hurts my ribs :/ It's got maybe a third of an inch left to close but it's only at 29 inches (it's supposed to be size 26). In addition, because there is no inner layer, the waist tape sort of digs into me :/

Are there any corsets that could be worn as part of a mermaid costume while tailswimming? I've always thought that would look fantastic underwater
One option I haven't seen mentioned is a corded corset. You can buy or make one created with a cording that's going to withstand water use. They've got the flexibility you might need. Just Google 'corded corset' and you'll see a ton of pages. Basic rubber cording could be useful, not very bouyant, and flexible enough for underwater use. I'm using some in a fluke design and it's taking me a while due to life happening, so I don't have pics, but again- search on 'rubber cord' and you'll see much.

I *love* the buskless corset in that first shot. I've only seen buskless from Vollers (edit- oh wait. No, it's a covered busk). I've also seen Firefly Path's, but they tend to be integrated into a costume or outfit. Would you mind telling me the corsetmaker who created that?

So I've had my corsets for a little over a month and a half now and I've been seasoning all three. This black one is on day 10, being worn for 4 hours. The bottom has fit to me hips a little bit but the top still really flares out. Is that still normal at this stage?
http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/02/01/6e49efb970ada3d44a591949148cab3b.jpghttp://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/02/01/64568818af19c6e5063809c665cfb303.jpg
ALSO, the pip of the corset is completely closed, the edges are touching and the bottom has about 2.5 inches to go however I am currently at a 30" waist with it on (only a 1 inch reduction) and it is supposed to be a 26" corset. But doing the math, if it were to close all the way that would only be 27.5" I'm not really into corsetting for the waist reduction so it's not a big deal, I just thought this was odd :/

seconding Mystic City Corsets for extra curvy off the rack. I Really like Orchard corsets, but as an extra squishy in the middle lady that also has wider than average bone structure, I found that I ran out of hip and rib room long before reaching the limit of compressing my middle. I can get more than a 10 inch reduction with an MCC corset and still have a little room in the rib spring. Love it~

I've made 2 corsets, but I don't have any pics of the first one. It was made from recycled denim and cheap plastic boning. The second one was still the cheap boning, but more work, and definitely better quality. I wanted to make a historical corset, but my health problems got too bad.
Here is the second corset I made. It's reversible and has a matching purse.

I saw that, I was wondering where all the notes were coming from and realized she had reblogged it, I'm so happy she thought it was good enough!
The only down side is that after she posted it a bunch of people reblogged it saying I had edited my waist, which I didn't, the only editing done was to replace the background. To prove it I even made pics of my cropped out head (I realised that my head works much the same way as people with big boobs, when you have something larger in comparison the waist will look smaller and my fro is pretty dang big lol) so without my head you can clearly see the waist isn't so impossibly small like most claimed

Right? I tend to wear a lot of very voluminous skirts and such with my corsets and people always give me grief for the same reason as Momo's hair making her waist look even smaller proportionally. But honestly if they don't like it they shouldn't look. What I find pretty or attractive or flattering isn't for everyone. This is why my corseting tumblr has been so inactive this year. I got tired of all the negative BS in the notes if it got picked up by one of the bigger blogs.

There is one solution to the washing issue. One of my friends has a corset made out of latex rubber insude & out. It has stainless steel busk & nail closures, but she doesn't know whether the steel boning inside is stainless steel. Anyhow, to clean it, she just holds it under the shower and washes it off with regular soap. It's never gotten rust, even though it's a few years old now.
It is a pretty edgy look. It's black and she wears it over black dresses & steampunk-type outfits. Wouldn't be everybody's cup of tea. But it is hand washable!
The other thing is, she has a non-standard figure and couldn't order a standard size, so she ordered hers made-to measure. The price was pretty steep. She got it from Germany (http://www.fantasticrubber.de/en/products/corsets/underbust-corset) and it "only" cost her 320 Euros. They've raised their prices even higher now. I know that would be a deal-breaker for most people. Maybe some other latex corset maker could be found who makes waterproof ones at a much better price? Especially if you can buy a standard size rather than going custom. I must say, though, this one is really high quality, and it's still in perfect condition after years of use. When you add up what several dry cleanings would have cost, maybe it's not such a bad deal.
Anyhow, I did a search, and it turns out a person who has the same corset did a Youtube demo of lacing it up by herself.
