Hello,

I'm new to the network, but as sculptor and visual effects person I have been around the mermaid block a few times. I was even a professional Mer-tail wrangler on "Sabina Down Under," with Robert Short at Robert Short Productions. I've created merfolk for movies and I have some ideas for advancing the art and technology of tail making.

I worked on the Sabrina Down Under mertails from start to finish, as well as on set wrangling, rigging and repair, so if you have questions about them, I can probably answer them. I was part of a team of artists at Robert Short Productions, where we Sculpted, molded and cast the tails. Robert Short designed the tails, and he and I did most of the sculpture work. He did much of the paint himself, and I got to go with Short to Austrailia to help with the on set work.

What were the Sabrina tails made of? Urethane? Also, how was the whole production? Were Lindsey Sloan and the guy who played the merman cool?

What happened to all the tails that were used in the movie?

The Sabrina tails were made of a urethane product called skin flex. Silicone technology, for anything other than molds, was at its beginning stages at that time. We had a very short production schedule with no time to experiment with new materials. We went with the product we knew well. Robert Short Productions developed the material for the tails from "Splash" and later used it for the dolphins in from "Cocoon" and "Ace Ventura." It was fun shooting in Australia, even though we had difficulty finding a decent margarita. The crew structure was different than US crew so there was a learning curve, but Robert Short and I had fun on the project.
Sloan and the others were fine to work with.

The Sabrina tails were shipped back from Australia, and last I heard put into storage.

I wanted to clarify a few things. I did not mean to suggest that I created the mermaid tails for Sabrina Down Under on My own, only that I was a key member of the Crew. There were more than a half dozen of us at Robert Short Productions at Robert Short`s shop in Santa Monica. Short designed the tails, worked side by side with me on the sculptures, and did most of the painting. I worked on the sculptures, molds, etc. along with the rest of the crew. Robert Short and I taveled to austrailia to handle the on set work.
