View Full Version : Extending a Finis Foil?

Hi, everyone! I had a question swimming around in my brain today. I recently got my finis foil, and I love it! Good movement, nice flow. But since I'm a fluffier mer, I was hoping to have a fluke more proportionate to my *ahem* assets. Is there a feasible way to make the fin wider? I'm already planning on sewing all the ruffles I can manage on the fluke of my tail, but I was wondering if you lovely mets had suggestions. :)

i did this to my finis tempo monofin following a video tutorial, i used a drill bit instead of a sanding bit
here is the first part of a extended monofin

KellyMermaid, how well did your rapid fin modification hold up? I am looking to extend my rapid this year for use in my new neoprene tail and I'm a little afraid to do it because I won't be able to afford a new fin if I screw it up. Last year I made my first spandex tails and the only complaint I had was the drag from the extra fabric in the large fluke where the fin didn't reach. I want/need the larger fluke but without the floppy/flowy drag so am thinking of using the method you showed in your videos (which were great btw!).

My modified Finis Tempo(it's the old purple one before they discontinued it) is still going strong! But if you use it in fabric like spandex it will quickly wear a hole in the spandex, if you cover the rough parts with e6000 or plumber's goop or glue strong fabric on the edges it won't wear through the fabric as quickly or maybe at all. Make sure you do a lot of testing before you put it in a finished tail, I had a lot of drag and barely no propulsion when I first made mine but after some adjustments it works great.
