Degas your silicone cheaply!

I found this tutorial on how to make your own vacuum chamber for degassing silicones and resins! No more bubbles in your molds or casts! I hopes this helps out other aspiring tail makers. :cool:

You can also buy a pressure chamber, for when you're mixing multiple colors into one mold. Keeping it at a higher pressure will cause the bubbles to shrink and not be there when you pull it out. I used it for making my toys. That way I both don't have to worry about bubbles and can mix and blend my colors.

Awesome! Will have to add this to the tailmaking index :) All pro tailmakers should look into degassers for sure, but for those making only a few, or smaller projects, this would be handy! I know it makes quite a difference in finished products- it's pretty clear when side by side that Merbellas doesn't use a degasser and Finfolk does.

Please do not make your own vacuum or pressure chamber. Yes, purchasing one is expensive. It's also much safer than making one. There are just some tools that shouldn't be built at home. Last summer an experienced prop maker was almost killed when the acrylic lid he built for a pressure chamber shattered near his face. The risk to your health is not worth bubble-free silicone.

Well there's his mistake. We've made people very aware on this site never to use acrylic for monofins because the pressure can make it snap into razor sharp pieces and potentially kill you. Acrylic sheets + pressure = injury and potential death. So obviously don't use acrylic if you want to make one of these!

That being said, yeah, if you DIY anything- but ESPECIALLY stuff like this- there's always a risk something can malfunction and has the potential to cause harm. But people on here work with hazardous materials and tools all the time, just the same. It's why there's a disclaimer on this site about that kind of stuff.

And the only people who really need to degas are people selling items, i do to think the odd hobbiests is going to hurt themselves. Just be careful and you should be ok.
