Pool Workouts

I come from a master's swimming background, and enjoy my pool workouts. I enjoy working out with bifins and monofins, and my workouts average between 1600 to 3500 yards a session. My workout pool is at the local YMCA, and luckily they allow tails when the pool use isn't dense, and there is no need for lane sharing. My questions are these: What kind of pool workouts do you mers do? Do you only workout with a tail, or do you also workout without a tail?

The YMCA does not allow breath-holding or hyperventilating, because there have been cases where swimmer passed out under water--and the lifeguards actually had to work for their wages! So I have developed a workout routine that I can do with a monofin--both without a tail, and with a tail. My favorite strokes without fins are freestyle, backstroke, and sidestroke--and I find that I can do these strokes with a monofin both without a tail, and also with a tail--without violating the Y's rule against breath-holding.

I truly enjoy my pool workouts, and am always interested in how other mers stay in shape and stay motivated.

I have been a dog paddler for the past 40 years.:$ I taught myself how to mermaid swim last year, by watching and copying youtube videos!:lol:

My work outs at the pool, I do 1 hour of lap swimming with monofin, have an hour food and rest break, then last hour tail swimming.

Jeeez I don't even compare to you guys!

I just do between 10 and 20 lengths alternating, one length under, one length front, one length back, 2 lengths side.

I definitely need to do more! :lol:

We go 2-3 times a week mostly in tails and do laps, practice bubble rings, front and back flips and just have fun :D

Fifi Tigg that sounds amazing!

I always go in my monofin and I never have the pool to myself, the only pool that lets me practice in the area is only 1.25 metres deep all over. So I cannot practice any tricks or anything :(

I'm going to start practicing in my tail though :D (I have swum in it before but don't regularly practice)

Last week's swim, I spent most of my swim time in a tail... Just for curiousity, I wanted to see if I had the stamina yet, to be in one for the duration of my swim. Instead of a little bit at a time per weekly swim.

And the answer is, YES!! AT LAST!

I've never known stamina problems, but my feet begin to hurt fast in a tail and don't tolerate monofins for extended periods of time, they're too used to their freedom :(

Most times I just want to get my money's worth, and the free hot water showers...Yea!:lol:

Because at $7.80, going for a swim for less than an hour, is just throwing money down the toilet.

I pretty much use the same swim workout I used many years ago when I was getting water safety instructor certified. I do 30 minutes to an hour of laps and tredding water. I just do it all in the monofin, plus I work on holding my breath and slowing my heart rate to conserve O2. I can't really explain how I do that one. I figured it out as a kid in my grandparents pool years ago.
