Pretty Disappointed

I am very disappointed. I went today to view the page of a well known and respected tail maker while using my Raina page only to find out I was no longer able to comment or "like". Thinking it was a glitch I switched to my regular account which I had just comment on their's last week (after advertising one of their services when they publicly asked people to share) only to find I have been blocked/banned from the page. So that means I'm blocked from both- so it was deliberate not some FB glitch. I can't re-like either.

I have had no communication with this person in my mind that was anything but positive. I have always heard this person was as respectful as they are talented. That they did not participating in community 'drama', that they were the person to go to if I ever could afford them. I have looked out for their best interest the same way I would for any of you when I see misconceptions/untruths being posted online. I have recommended them to my fans and friends and have had people make purchases based on my recommendations.

Has anyone noticed that community "Drama" is basically started by people who aren't in the community at all? I have a feeling this comes on the advice of a certain mer who has issues with me. They probably should have issues with me, because I certainly have issues with them and their choices. But that's OUR issue. I do my best to make sure other people in my life either don't know an issue exists, or if they do they don't feel any reason to pick a side. I don't put my fans or friends in uncomfortable situations like that, I don't give them ultimatums or tell them "dont talk to that person". It's really disappointing to me that someone else would do that, but I am not surprised. I am surprised the tail maker listened given their apparent high standing - if that's indeed what happened.

This is the assumption I'm making, because I recently have had issues with someone else mutual with this person, also another person I never had prior contact with and did nothing but speak positively too. Nope, they deleted all my comments and blocked me from their page. :/ If I have been blocked by this tail maker for some other reason, then it is unknown to me. This is a pretty petty way to deal with a problem you have with a person.
I had saved the money for a tail by this person twice but never heard back any email replies so I went with someone else.

Im getting a bit tired of this clique-ness in our community. People who are not our community claiming to represent it, doing very non-communal things, It's no wonder so many anonymous things pop up- people want to call out the injustices they see but don't want to have to deal with a public drama queen. After all, any time I ever publicly call someone out even though I always offer evidence of my claims- you get lots of FB drama and who really wants all that public attention? Well, I can't be the only person in the community who gets sick of this and calls it out or stands up against it. :/

Yeah, Im pretty tired of it all, and pretty damn disappointed. I think because I always do my best to approach people with a fresh perspective, respect, empathy, and I can SEPARATE people and come to independent decisions I assume other people approach each other in the same way. Nope.

So, since I just got all ranty I would like to say, I am eternally grateful for the mature, respectful, and wonderful people in our community. We really are not anything like these people. We work together, we celebrate together, we some times disagree but when it comes down to it we've actually got mer-spirit and we want to see each other succeed. Without the community support I get I would be nothing. I think most of us feel that way. The community in a way gave us permission and hope to be who we are. Some people, need to remember that.

It's human nature, so no escaping it. I spent fifteen years in Civil War reenacting. The drama, petty fights, cliques, pouting, etc. are almost identical. I'm easy going and try to let such things roll, it's not always possible unfortunately. Take comfort in it not being just a Mer problem.

That sucks...I'm sorry Raina! I think it's that persons loss... You are a great advocate for the people you support, and the reason I appreciate reading many of your posts is because you are completely honest and fair (often giving the benefit of the doubt...more than I would anyway!). You are also very respectful in your wording when you are expressing your dislike for a persons actions...never out of line or blatantly rude! If I ever have a page as a tailmaker, I will not delete you...even if we had a falling out...that's just silly!!! :) It is disappointing, but you have a lot of love and support in a community of people who have gotten to know you...so again, totally their loss!

Yeah Raina, you hit the nail on the head and probally why I haven't been as active on he board. I'm tired of investing in someones work only to have them drop out because A) Lazy B) the clique or C) can't handle the demand.

Not even close to giving up the mer-passion but it's just getting harder to invest your time into drama and false promises. I really want a realistic tail and be more committed to my mer-fandom but it looks like it's not going to happen for a long time. :(

I'm really sorry to hear about this, Raina! I can't stand petty conflict and, being new to the community, it makes me really sad to read/hear that this sort of thing circulates so often. Like, one of the reasons why I sort of fell away from the Faire circuit was because of the drama and the clique-ish attitudes that everyone had, which sucks, because I love the faires so much. This sort of negativity really sucks the fun and positivity out of everything, and only proves to alienate others... I think all of us, well-known, little-known, veteran, or newbie, should be as positive and supportive as we can for one another - and you're a great example of someone who upholds that positivity and support. I think you approach it with a good mind and I definitely admire that :-)

I'm sick of the drama too. I love the mer community but honestly, it's getting tiring dealing with petty drama and issues. I don't want some issues between you and that certain mer to divide the mer community in half. Well I want to make it clear, I dont feel it's the actual community causing these issues, but rather people who are not a part of it at all. (They'll leap at the chance to represent us though!) Everyone knows I have issues with Eric, and there are people on here I've disagreed with, but I think I approach every situation as it's own and do my best to make sure it's not a pick my side or pick Erics, Sort of thing. I dont feel that's respectful to me, Eric, or anyone else. I can have my own issues all I want, that doesnt mean they need to be mernetworks issues. So in the situation I described in the first post of this thread you'll notice I haven't named any names. I dont expect other people to stop supporting that tail makers work because I sincerely believe this is the result of a personal issue with ME not the community. I can't expect and I wouldn't ask people to pick a side.

I just feel like we sorta tip toe around the drama, gossip, etc. I believe that mentality only gives drama more power. When you pull it out of the shadows and slap it right into the spotlight so we can all have a look and make our own decisions you steal a heck of a lot of it's power. After that, the only power it gets comes from us so it's up to us how we respond. I just dont want this community to go down that way. We've grown so much in the time since mer yuku and back when I first joined. There was a convention for goodness sake! We've watched some of our fellow mers rise to professional status, we've cheered for those who finally got into some tails, we've supported each other through bad things, and we've caused huge change in each other's lives.

We decide what the community is, not those from the outside who would bring us down :)

I'm so sorry that this is happenning... it just does not seem fair. Your money is as green as any others, why block you when you are such a great potential customer? It makes no sense to me at all. What does make unfortunate sense to me on some level is the underlying venom from these non-community members seeping in, permeating through the community and poisoning it in certain areas, such as this. I know you are too kind to name names, but I do find it interesting that the same set of people that you have issues with are influenced by these same individuals. Perhaps by bringing more discussion around this you are developing the antidote? I hope so :) It seems to me that the more people in the community that know, the more awareness it brings. And while it may be a painful and harsh reality for those that have been blinded thus far, it will be a welcome release from the bonds of ignorance. More power to you sweetheart! Well, I am still somewhat new- so I may not have much place to put my two cents in, but here's my thought on drama-- and I am an advocate of not giving energy to the things that I don't care for. I find it fascinating how people will go out of their way to do harm or damage to something or someone they don't like. If I don't like something, I don't waste any energy on it. I prefer to spend my time and energy on creation rather than destruction.
It's like hate-crimes. I keep thinking, why would this person spend time, energy and effort to attack someone they don't like? It makes no sense to me! Why go "out of your way" to waste the energy? Instead, I like to let the wonder of diversity reign in my life and the world around me (as it will whether I want it to or not) and focus my attention on the creation of the life that I want, and the beauty of the things I put in my life. I surround myself with the world I believe in.
I agree with Alveric: it is human nature. People will always want to control each other, or put people and things into "boxes", people will always have drama (as everyone is speaking up about in past experiences, whether LARP, Civil War recreation or Faires), people will always have cliques, and there will always be some people with sharp hurtful actions and words. I just do my best to let them live in the world they want to live in (which is usually a much lonelier and frustrating existance-- punishment enough if you ask me), and focus on the world I want to live in.

WARNING DRAMA AHEAD WARNING DRAMA AHEAD

Im so upset for one of my fans my head is about ready to pop. The stupid politics of tail makers is just blowing my mind.

Frequently I have fans who will contact me when they're nervous about placing a tail order with any maker. This isnt a bash Eric thing, a good portion of the emails have nothing to do with him, just people in generally nervous about placing those orders and asking me for advice, sharing their excitement and their nervousness, and hopefully in the end sharing with me how happy they are when they get their tails.

I have a fan I've been communicating with for about 6 months. We actually met on this tail makers page, both oogling the tails. We both got enough money to purchase one and as you know I went with Raven and my fan went on hoping they were on the wait list for one of these awesome tails. All this time later, they still never ever did hear back. Unfortunately there was a death in the family and the $$ had to be spent on arrangements for that. These things happen, it sucks :( so my fan went on determined to save enough money once again for their dream tail.

My fan had a lot of ambitions for what they'd do with their tail, many of them involved working with children who have special needs. Like me, they were trying to do this anyway with a tail that was sub par... but you can only go so far with a tail that's falling apart. Unfortunately this tail maker whom she's never had ANYTHING but a positive exchange with felt the need to delete all their POSITIVE COMMENTS and questions from the facebook photos and wall of their page!!!!!! WHAT THE HECK IS WITH THIS?! At least when people are deleting negative stuff I kinda understand, but like myself, this person was nothing but polite and hopeful for another tail just to get the same treatment.

She had an exchange with the person- naturally all deleted from FB now- asking them if they had decided to only sell to famous people now. The tail maker agreed that was the case because they were loyal and returning customers. Insert my rage head exploding right... NOW. Of course, this left my fan feeling broken hearted and wondering if they were black listed from the community. Hence emailing me trying to figure out how they're going to save for a new tail and where the heck they're going to buy it from now.

Im sure, the majority of you reading this, can relate to the sheer frustration I am feeling for this person, and quite possibly are also bashing your head against the keyboard. What the hell? I mean, seriously?

First of all, if you're only going to deal with the market you choose, stop calling yourself a tail maker. You aren't a tail maker, you aren't the service provided to the community, for people who can pay you for something they love. You're a freelance special FX artist. Don't put this front on to the community like you're willing to work for them if you arent. It gives people horrible false hope, they waste lots of $ and time waiting around for a chance to buy one of your tails, one you aren't even going to sell them unless, hey, they're famous! (what exactly does it mean to be famous in this mermaiding world? A bunch of likes on FB?) If you're a freelance artist who's going to pick and choose what they do, then for goodness sake, say that.

Shelly hit it on the head. Why should one person's money of the same value somehow be less than someone else's? It's quite sufficient to say that once someone purchases a tail from a person and has a good experience we'd all become returning customers. I can tell you right now without a doubt if I need to replace my tail in the future, I'll be going right back to Raven. "famous" people aren't the only loyal people in the world, and aren't the only returning customers. :/

And tailmakers, you all need to learn a thing or two about respect. THIS IS THE FREAKING INTERNET. We can all see what you post publicly. We know who hates who and who gets along with who AND IF YOU WERE GOOD BUSINESS PEOPLE WE WOULDNT. It shouldn't freaking matter either! Grow up!
THERE WOULD BE NO TAIL MAKING BUSINESS WITHOUT THE PEOPLE WHO BUY TAILS. Just as there would be not as many mers around if people didn't make them. (I know I couldn't make one!)

This is just so freaking pathetic. You know, the general excuses of "life is busy" actually do fly for me when it comes to ANY tail maker turning people away or making them wait along time. A lot of people want Raven or Shelly tails right now, but each maker only takes on so many clients at a time so you can be waiting a while. Waiting isnt a bad thing, but to let a person wait for that long only to find out you've never had any intention of selling to them? geesh, that's horrible karma right there.

I am just so incredibly tired of the BS and DRAMA with certain tail makers and mermaids GET OVER YOURSELVES you aren't the best and only ones out there as much as you'd like to think you are. You live in your own clicky little bubbles and never acknowledge that ANYONE helped you get where you are. People see it! They aren't idiots. I don't go around saying exactly what I think because I dont have to, people see through it.

So watch out. More and more tail makers are coming, and more and more professionals mers are getting things geared up. Enjoy your time at the top, it must be incredibly exhausting and lonely to constantly fight so you can think you're the only ones up there. The amount of effort that goes into belittling possible fans and clients simply because people feel threatened blows my mind. It's INSANE and UNHEALTHY. The crap that gets said on FB, the attitudes toward people/clients/fans, the email responses.... it's all going to catch up.

NOW TO DISPELL A PROFESSIONAL MERMAID MYTH
Regardless of what you see on FB, I've learned through reliable sources what a lot of the professionals mers make! Don't be fooled by FB likes into thinking people are "the top". They're working just as hard as you are/would be to make this work, they're just a lot better and making it seem like it works. Don't forget that Hannah (the pioneer for us all) does more than just mermaiding, she does photography, art, and modelling and Im sure other things as well. Mermaid Melissa works at sea world again , Linden teaches too, and part of what Medusa Sirena does is teaching and promotion for the wreck bar, Kariel teaches classes, and many other professional mers have part time (or several part time) jobs to pay for these things. Underwater cameras, tails, websites, merch, business cards, all those expenses add up. More often than not services are exchanged, or if you're lucky a fan will do them for you free or a bit of promotion.

Personally, I teach, work an art gallery, teach guitar, and do professional photos on top of mermaiding. I mermaid in a country that is only warm 3 months of the year and when I get things going good, I can pay my bills with mermaiding. You wouldn't think id get gigs in the winter, but I've been doing 1-2 a week. Some things pay really well, other things not so much, and some things I do for charity because I believe in them all. Tails cost money, the materials I use cost money, I pay my assistants and any other mermaids I hire, website costs money, merch costs money, travel costs money, photoshoots cost money unless Im trading services, etc. I've been lucky to have a friend donate their services to create my logo for me.

Mermaiding doesn't give you health or dental insurance, you're not going to get unemployment if you have a bad month. It's not, oh I'm a pretty mermaid someone's going to hire me to pose in a photo or swim in a tank and I'll make loads of $$$

Don't be tricked into this facade of being on top or making a living as a mermaid. People just can't do it, and it stresses so many out who look up to professionals and think this all comes together for us. It doesnt. Ive had my share of eat nothing but ramen noodles or oatmeal for a month in order to continue doing this. I go on this big rant, because my fan, AND SO MANY OTHERS THAT EMAIL ME, break my heart when they think they can't hit the level they want with mermaiding. There are so many misconceptions into what it takes to 'make it big' I think it's going to need it's own thread or article in the next e-mag. But please people, dont compare yourself, tail maker or mer, to the current people at the top and think you'll never get there or that it's impossible. The "fame" is an illusion. It's all just hard work and the right kind of marketing yourself. At the end of the day, everyone's gotta eat, and everyones poo still stinks. :/

TAIL MAKERS get your collectives butts in gear and stop being jerks to clients and future clients. Remember Adam Martyn? Don't underestimate the pull of the community.

COMMUNITY don't hold yourself to unrealistic ideals and expectations. Judge your own mermaiding by your own set of goals. Don't get discouraged because of one person's narrow minded few of being "famous" but do what feels right for YOU and make it work whatever way you can!

As for the community section, you have a very good point. I think there are a lot of cases in which people look at 'famous' fb mermaids and think they will never reach their status and fame. I think some of us forget that the mass majority of the world doesn't even realize that those 'famous' mermaids exist. Heck, I didn't know mermaiding was even real until I happened to stumble on the Weeki Wachii Mermaids. They're no more famous than anyone else. They're just popular on fb. Anyone can make it in the mermaiding world. Like you said Raina, it's just a lot of hard work.

I'm very disappointed at that tailmaker's behaviour - everything I'd heard about this person up until recently was so positive, it's so disappointing. These people are happy to be praised and talked up by the community for their product, but apparently once they make it "big" the community suddenly means nothing. Such a shame.

I agree on the second point as well - I think it's important for us all to remember that chances are we are not going to make a full-time living as a mermaid…. But that doesn't mean it can't be the most bloody awesome part-time job ever.

Exactly. I live, and breathe it believe me. But I have my education, I have my career. Id like to have a pension, and health coverage etc. I'd like to have kids and be able to support them. I work my fish butt off and the fact that I can go months and months with the majority of my income being from mermaiding is astounding but at the end of the day, if there's an emergency, some payment I have to make I didnt expect etc I am so happy I still do all these other things.

I've already proven and shown how you can "buy" likes on FB too. Id rather have me fans who are actually able to think for themselves than a bunch of mindless praise any day. I wonder what will happen for these people if FB ever shuts down? or god forbid, they change the way pages run? All that .. down the drain!
