Why you shouldn't feel pressured to have a silicone tail!

Right alright, so here we go! This is a topic that is often brought up in bits and pieces within our community. It was mentioned here (http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?11123-how-i-ve-been-feeling-about-the-MER-COMMUNITY&highlight=shouldn%27t+feel+silicone) by jukumerboii, and Kae Leah was feeling bad about not having a silicone tail for a time, but I think it deserved a place where is can be the sole matter at hand. Now, I am in no way dissing silicone tails or their owners, I want a silicone tail more than anything! Let me tell you what I'm talking about.

I have been a part of the mermaid community for the past five (almost six... wow, that long?). I was high on the idea of swimming in a tail and bought myself a beautiful fabric tail. I made a few tails as well and I was feeling great! I knew that the majority of the community had fabric tails, so I saw myself as an equal. It was the day I saw a girl about my age with a video of herself swimming in a shiny new Mertailor latex tail. A touch of jealousy kicked in, and I decided it was now my goal to buy the same tail that she had, so I could once more feel even.
Flash forward to a couple of years later when silicone tails became the big thing. I wasn't bothered by the fact that adults had these gorgeous tails - how could I expect myself, a thirteen year old girl to have a tail like that? I carried on until I started seeing younger girls will thousands of dollars worth of silicone around their legs. Then there were the girls who had just found out about the mer-community and snagged a tail only months after! My thought was always, well why can't I have that? Why isn't that me? I wanted nothing more than one of these beautiful elaborate tails.
Now onto the present, and I have found these to be such silly questions! Well, I wasn't blessed with thousands of dollars to spend at my disposal. I know know that I myself am going to have to work hard to get my dream tail.
Here is another thing I have realized. A thirteen year old girl such as my former self had no need for a tail like this. I was far too shy to go out in public, my pool is too small, and I'm still growing! Back then, I wanted that silicone tail because I wanted so desperately to fit in. I wanted to feel like I was as much of a mermaid as everyone with silicone tail. I know that is so far away from the truth. I am nearly sixteen now and yeah, I still want a silicone tail. Like, really really really want a silicone tail. But why do I want one? I want it for me. I want to see the smile on a child's face when they see me, I want the confidence that comes with wearing one of these beauties, I want one because it is my dream!
Too long, didn't read? I was always so jealous of mers who had silicone tails, and was wanting one only because I felt like I didn't fit in.

I do not speak for myself here, as I have had conversations with others who felt left out because they felt like they would never reach the point of having a silicone tail. I reminded them how there was absolutely no need to worry. I asked them, why do you want a silicone tail? Do you understand the risks and maintenance of one of these tails? Are you ready for this commitment? I want everyone considering a silicone tail to ask themselves these questions and really give them thought.

So, In short, I just wanted to let everyone know that having a fabric tail makes you no less of a mermaid than a mer with a silicone tail! Having a silicone tail makes you no more of a mermaid than those without. Here is what makes you a mer: how much you really feel it deep inside of your bones. Do you believe you are a mer? Wonderful, then let me tell you that you sure as hell are. I wish that i had read this when I was still searching for myself, I wasted a lot of time and put friendships ( you know who you are. I'm still jealous :lol:) in jeopardy over jealously and simply feeling bad! I don't want any new or old members feeling this way simply because their tails aren't realistic, or the other way around.

Mers with fabric tails are mer. Mers with silicone tails are mers. Mers with neoprene tails are mers. Mers with tails that are made out of scrap fabric from the bargain bins are mers. Everyone on this site is a wonderful, beautiful mer, and we are all equal! :)

From the very beginning, I've always felt (and said) that all tails are equal.

I've seen fabric tails that looked better (some even more realistic) to me than some silicone tails.
But I get that to many, a silicone tail from makers like Merbella or Pearlie are the ultimate goal.

I admit I'm totally fascinated by them, but I've always been someone who loved to admire beautiful things (clothes, jewelry, whatever) without the need or desire to possess them myself.

Still, one day, I would like to invest in a silicone tail as well.
Until then, I'm fine with fabric- I couldn't do half the moves I use in my merballet with a silicone tail on.

In regards to the topic; I can see how a young teen might feel that pressure. I've read some comments here and on un-boxing videos by some of the more well known or looked up to mers who have said some pretty snarky things about fabric tails. That's unfortunate.

I like having fabric tails; I have a few because I don't like to commit to a certain look. I wouldn't want to wear the same dress every time I go to a formal dinner; even it were the nicest dress I could imagine; it would just be boring to me. I like that I have tails for seasons, and tops, and accessories to match each depending on my mood and the event.

I got into mermaiding originally to fulfill a childhood dream of being a real mermaid. But the first time I did it what overwhelmed me was the love and joy it brought children; and that's why I continue to do it. What I've found myself is kids don't care about what your tail is made of; they're so lit up with the fantasy and joy. This has just been my experience. Other mers that perform for other audiences may feel that there's a demand for more realistic tails.

I'm not sure l ever want to own a silicone tail. I think they are GORGEOUS and I LOVE the artistry involved. But I can't commit to one look. And while I have the means to purchase one; I'm a mother of two and I can think of many other ways that money would be better spent in my home and on my children. That's just my take; everyone can spend their money how they want. :)

Heck yes. I love my fabric tail. Kids think I'm real, I feel magical, and it's so cheap and easy.

Silicone is certainly something, but it is not the only good option at all. Well said.

I like having fabric tails; I have a few because I don't like to commit to a certain look. I found this to be a really nice way of looking at things, and it has definitely opened up my eyes further to the perks of fabric tails! While there are many mers with both fabric and silicone, I feel like there would be a certain need to wear the silicone tail out to meets and outings - it only makes sense. In my own eyes, however, I find that my future tail will be very important me and truly be an extension of myself when I become a mer. I look forward to building myself off of the one tail!

Seconded! Not that I've been here long and not that I know you at all but I would not have guessed your age from your maturity and your ability to understand that you are growing. I have met so many young people who think they can drop a couple thousand dollars on an expensive hand tailored thing only to get pissed that six months later it doesn't fit and that they can't sell it to anyone else because no one else that young wants it.

While I someday would love a silicone tail, I have realized that the specific design and mersona I am looking at wouldn't even benefit from a silicone tail because I would loose the fuzz I get using stretch velvet.

Calizaire I too enjoyed that you mentioned with fabric tails you can easily have many options.

I think what helped put things in perspective for me is sometimes you see mers with nice silicone tails talking about swimming in a fabric tail instead because sometimes even the "all mighty silicone tail" has its drawbacks. A great example is Keiris's hybrid tail (http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?11558-Keiris-New-Hybrid-Tail) because the very reason he created this part fabric part silicone tail was:

I decided at the beginning of summer that I wanted a sleeker lighter tail as an alternative to my silicone ones. Something that would be easier to get on quickly and be lighter to transport and use in smaller spaces than the ocean.

I have been wanting silicone because I saw it as the only way to make my dream tail possible due to fluke shape, colors, etc. The more I explore Mernetwork the more I find fabric and neoprene tails that are really realistic looking and it shows me that if you are willing to ignore the idea of limitations with fabric and get creative you can make some amazing tails!

I've been using fabric tails from 1993 on. Most of my tails are maid in crushed velvet and kids say that they look and feel like dolphin-skin ;)
I just want one 1 silicone tail (that I'm going to make), but I still keep and use my fabric tails at events and for cosplay ;)

I really really want to make a fabric tail that is ornate as hell. I have a silicone tail that I bought third hand and it's great, but I also have a fabric tail and it's so much easier to deal with. Sometimes I just don't want to deal with the hassle of the silicone tail.

Absolutely! This is going to sound like I flunked Biology 101 but your tail is in your head. You do not need a tail to be a mermaid or merman. It's in your soul. Sure, some of us have tails but the material from which they are made is irrelevant. Our tails are simply prosthetics that allow the rest of the world to see us as we truly are. To be honest, sometimes I think my legs are my costume. But this is where we begin to diversify. Some of us like marine biology. Others do not. Some like modeling in a tail or working with children. Others do not. Some of us eat seafood. Others do not. The list goes on and on. But when you close your eyes can you hear the sound of the sea? Can you feel the sand between your fingertips and the warmth of the water? You're a mermaid. :)

What a great post! I wanted and made a silicone tail purely for the challenge of making one. Now that I have one...frankly I don't enjoy swimming in it all that much. Fabric is way more comfortable and far easier to get into (though I could just be a lousy tailmaker for all I know, LOL) and I swim in fabric far more often. I don't regret getting the fancy one and in fact have my first awesome photoshoot tomorrow! I'm very proud of it. But I'd be a happy carefree mermaid without one, too. And I totally agree with Calizaire, too. I love changing my look frequently. Fabric is totally the (most economical) way to go for that.

Funny thing, I remember some local bellydancers would save for months for the best high-end Bellas and Madame Whatshername costumes...but nobody outside the community can tell a Bella from a homemade costume or something cheap from Ebay, frankly. ;) Being a bellydancer is about the dancing, not the trappings. I feel the same way about tails and mermaids. What Merman Dan said. :)

Exactly! It would really help not only show the creative designs and beauty of non-silicone tails but it would help immensely with inspiration-searching! I had such a hard time finding inspiration for how I could take advantage of painting neoprene. I would love to see a site like this.

I want a silicone tail in the future for a few reasons now aside from just feeling like I need one. I had that problem when I first started up, too.

Speaking of which, they haven't updated in a while... It's been the same pink Fliptail for a month or two. There's been so many great new tails!

I have always wanted a more realistic looking tail. I'd been going to Weeki Watchie since I was a little girl, and wanted a tail like theirs. When I saw the silicone beauties like Raven's and Pearlie May's, and the other incredible tail makers, I knew that's what I ultimately wanted, and for the briefest of times thought I would not be happy with a tail unless it was silicone.

I got over that when I started studying some of the sequined tails, and the beautifully painted neoprene tails. Hannah's tails are proof you don't need silicone to look magical, and Nyx's painted neoprene is so dimensional that I had a hard time believing it was just paint. And then Keiris' hybrid tail looks like the perfect solution for when I need a tail I can travel with. There are so many beautiful options for tails. Right now I'd be thrilled to make my own fabric tail, but even without one, I'm still a mermaid.

Ultimately, I will get a full silicone tail, but I'm not going to be unhappy with another kind at all.

I love tracking people down and meeting new people so I would love working on finding and contacting mets for permission to post their pictures. But I realy thinking making is a gallery for people to post their own would be great too :). With different folders for different types.

Aww, don't feel badly for being fortunate! Being fortunate enough to have nice things is a great thing, and you seem grateful, so that's even better. Also, if you take care of your tail, then you deserve it! If I had the opportunity to go straight for silicone, I would probably take that opportunity. I most likely won't, and that's ok too. Most people shouldn't jump right to silicone because it's a big commitment that they might not actually be ready for, but if you're willing to take it on (safely), then no worries. :)

Same. I felt like that for a long time until recently. Then I started reading sob stories of, "got my first tail, its silicone!!!" Excuses and much crying later of people unable to swim and then finding faults with the tail because of the lack of strength to swim in said tail, or buying one and then selling it less than a week later etc. Made me think really hard about why I wanted a silicone tail so bad and it was the same reasons as above. Just for looks and to be that special snowflake. Then recently I made a post about people not loving the fabric tail wearers and then I thought, "Carps that! I'm doing what I like and I'm not stuck with the same expensive tail forever. Basic tail cost, I can make lots and lots of fabric tails in whatever colors or print. And so light to carry and look after."

In short, silicone tails? I'm over it. Fabric tails? Love them all!:cool:

I am still waiting to see if that Russian tail ever arrives from the Finnish website. Meanwhile I am still working on ideas and designs or my dream tail. Sort of thinking I want a hybrid. I love the way flukes can be sculpted. As for the tail body, I was impressed as to how well the borrowed fabric tail I wore worked and looked in the photographs.

Threads like this one are really helpful. There is a wealth of knowledge in the archives.

Merpeople need to stop hating on other Mers I feel like it doesn't matter if you have a silicone tail worth $5,000 or have one made of scraps it's what you feel in your heart and soul what really matters in the end you are doing this to feel free and happy not to satisfy others at least it's like that for me ...
