Shark Tail Oh-Ah-Ah!

Hey all! So there have been discussions floating around about shark tails and if it would be possible to have a side to side moving tail without paralyzing yourself. Well, I have come up with an idea I think could really work. My Merchanic has okeyd the idea and thinks it would be safer and is physically possible! So I 'built' a prototype fluke out of cardboard and below is a video of me explaining how it will work and the plan for the suit itself.

This thread, although it will take a very long time, will chronicle the journey of the shark tail. Anyone else is free to use my idea to make their own tail and honestly, please do so because it is going to take me literally years to get this into the real world. But it is something I am really excited for and hopefully it will develop slowly but surely. Step one was this prototype and it has happened so yay! Step two is showing the prototype to my Merchanic since he was at work when I made it. Then from there I have no idea that is his area. Probably building the monofin and testing it out in the water. *shrugs*

Anywho, here is the video I made explaining the tail and how it will work. I've never done a video like this before so that is why it sucks XD Also, thank you I know I have no head. It's not a privacy thing, its a 'my camera is totally at the wrong angle' thing. And I was too lazy to re-do it. So yea.

So what are your thoughts? Would a tail like this work? Am I going to die? What materials would you use?

Interesting concept. I think it will be a lot harder to do flips and turns etc if you're moving like that.

Oh yea, absolutely. But sharks are denizens of the deep, not gorgeous graceful, playful creatures. I never had plans to do flips or twirls in this tail.

That's true, but not stareotypically. Also i wanna be a tigershark which are um... Not XD

I've always had a deep love for Swell Sharks though which are super sweetie pies so once I have a working side-to-side fluke and I test it int he water, I will probably figure out a way to make it really versatile and flexible so I can maybe have a swell shark tail some day.

I explained in the video that the suit is going to be round and hollow. My issue more is how I'm going to keep the tail from filling with water...

Last spring I had an idea for a physical mermaid avatar. Perhaps this thread is a good place to share some of the speculation I have been mulling over for the last few months.

I was working a job and a New Age Art steampunk thing in Petaluma called the "River town Revival." Having nothing better to do than speculate about mermaids in the lagoon. I was imagining how I might see things from that point of view.

I have a Virtual Reality helmet like the one used to control the mini-sub in the opening scenes of the movie Titanic. This helmet uses two 1990s era camcorder viewfinders, so the resolution is fairly low. Still there is enough to give one an idea of tele-presence. With cheap cell phone cameras now on the market, and the major players working on the next generation +1 of VR wearables, I was thinking of making a mermaid shaped mini-sub. Perhaps one that could propel itself like a fish.

I do not know it this would work or not?

A late friend of mine always wanted me to make a skesis costume from Dark Crystal. Sadly he passed away before the technology was practical. I always wanted to rig a shark in the lake at the old Southern California Renaissance faire. So it might be possible to make such a device where one can see from the Avatar's point of view.

The downside is that there would need to be some sort of umbilical tether to contain the control signals. Radio waves do not travel under water. (Why sonar is used)

This is more puppetry than anything else. Still I am a puppeteer, and performed a simple one at the Ren Faire for a number of years. It was a small rodent hand puppet in a basket. Had an effective delayed reaction. I would hear as the guests passed me "My God! I thought that was real." Once I was doing a gig with a mother and a child. The child petting the puppet managed to get it out of the basket and started to walk away with my arm extended. Puppets sometimes do take on a life of their own.

I love puppets! War Horse is one of my favorite shows and I always wanted to make and work with puppets like the horse. And I wanted to make puppets of characters fro. The Phantom Tollbooth and do a play/puppet show :D

I think your idea and design is really cool! I've actually never seen titanic so I'm not sure what you are referring to specifically but I think I understand. You won't know if it works until you try! I would love to see the progress :)

there was a man-sized submarine looking like a shark iirc, which was used by scientists to study sharks close up.
It looked pretty cool.
Sadly, I can't find the docu about it, because the whole internet is spammed with the "fake shark submarine"-carp from shark week instead.
