NC Mer-Mania 2016

The NC Mer-Mania website (http://ncmermania.com) is now live!

"We are glad you are here! We hope that you will join us for one of the largest merfolk meetups of 2016. On January 2-3, 2016, hundreds of mermaids and mermen from around the word will come together in a state of the art aquatic facility, the Greensboro Aquatic Center, in North Carolina for swimming, networking, learning, friendship and so much more!


We will play host to several educational sessions, a Kid Zone entertainment area, and our “crown jewel” event; the Saturday evening Mersquerade. This is a family friendly conference and open to everyone interested in the fast-growing world of mermaiding. We even have openings for mer-related vendors as well. Sponsorships for this event are available.

For those arriving early, there will also be a mixer at the Sheraton Greensboro the night of January 1st.

To be fair it'll be three days. :) On Friday we'll have registration and a mixer at the Sheraton Greensboro, complete with a DJ and karaoke. On Saturday registration will continue, we'll have our 6-hour swim in the wondrous waters of the Greensboro Aquatic Center, during which time we will most likely have vendors and workshops, and then the evening event at the aquarium. On Sunday we'll have another 6-hour swim and I am working on an event for those who are staying through Sunday night.

Arion I'm curious. You are partially deaf- correct? You can hear some things?

I'm deaf. In fact, with deafness it's all about the depth.
The level on my left ear is severe (I lost hearing between 70 and 90 dB) and on my right ear, it's medium (between 40 and 70 dB).
Because the level on my right ear is actually close to 70 dB, I could say the loss on both ears are severe. So yeah.. It's quite deep.

To help you to understand :

Loss of 20-40 dB: slight deafness. 40dB represents the volume of a normal conversation.

Loss 40 to 70dB: Medium Deafness. 60 dB is the sound level of a lively conversation.

Loss 70 to 90dB: severe deafness. 80 dB is the loudness of a busy street.

Greater than 90dB loss: profound deafness. 100 dB is the sound of a jackhammer ; 120dB that of a jet engine 10 meters.

Beyond a loss of 120 dB, it's total deafness.

How do we sign up to volunteer for events? I want to attend the breath holding class, else I am free. I already mentioned volunteering to watch the kids on Saturday during the dance and defiantly want to be in the water for the kids cove. After that I love to help out.

I am seriously considering attending this lovely event. I've had a rough year, and I kinda deserve a treat! (Especially since my little dog's surgery is making me miss FaerieCon. :crying: )

A few questions:

• Will we have access to the Aquarium exhibits during the Mersquerade? Due to my mind boggling dietary restrictions, I'm pretty sure I couldn't eat the dinner, but I would be happy as a clam looking at all the fishies and then attending the dance.

• Is parking pretty easy for the various MerMania venues?

• Will there be any open mic musical opportunities along with or in addition to karaoke? I'd enjoying singing one or two of my original Neptune's Keep songs.

• If the initial Mersquerade quota sells out, will you be able to rent additional space to accommodate those registering later?

Absolutely! You can get photos by the 90,000 gallon Shark Reef exhibit, pet the stingrays in the touch tank, get close with otters, penguins, fishing cats, and more!

Yeah, they're a tad sciency at the Science Center. ;) The do have divers in the big tank daily to clean the glass and substrate but you have to only wear their equipment in addition to being scuba certified. No tails. Yeah, I asked...

Ugh I want to cry. It sounds so amazing. In order to make it I'd have to travel during New Years Eve. As a amazing all you mers are, I would have to choose between spending time with my family and going to this meet-up. Hopefully I can attend the next if it's not during a big holiday time.

Not to muddy the waters, but winter is the worst time to travel for folks like me living in the snow belt. There's always a very good chance at getting stuck in an airport with cancelled flights due to snow. For a 3-day event, it's a real risk traveling in January. One flight cancellation, and one could easily miss most of the fun! I would much prefer an event like this to be in the spring. Just sayin'.

I'll chime in and say I love having it in January, because it's the only time I can travel out of state. I work as a tour guide, so by the time spring rolls around I'm too busy to take the time off work and travel. (that, and all the local cons happen in the spring). Just after Christmas is a great time for me.

I have to agree with the weather comments, that's definitely a concern for my group as we are driving 15 hours very early New Year's Day. As for hosting the con ON New Years next year, I'm strongly opposed to this. Many people (including myself) have to work a special event or have plans with friends and family and I think you'd see A.) a substantial loss in attendance and B.) A lot of problems caused with mers trying to change plans to accommodate this. Not to mention flight prices rocketing during holidays.

So I have a question. I see the regular swimming tickets are $35 and the observer tickets are $8.... which are everyone's mertenders getting?

My boyfriend will be coming with me, and he's not exactly a fish in water, but he's a photographer and definitely wanted to try and get some shots of me while we're there. And I'm sure he'll be helping me haul my fish butt in and out of the water too. xD

But other than that and maybe a few hours of getting photos/video he probably won't be swimming. Do we have to get the $35 for him to have pool access? Thanks!

If he's taking underwater pictures and video, he needs a swimming pass. If he's only carry you in and out and assisting, the observer pass is fine. I actually asked this a few weeks ago in the FB group :)

I'm not gonna be super formal, but I believe that some folks will be going all out and gettin' all fancied up. I'll be wearing a cute LBD and jazzing it up with accessories and colorful shoes. I'm skipping the mask thing because masquerade masks creep me out. I'll be making a fascinator instead and will be adding a little birdcage veil to it to cover my face a bit.

Yes the ball will be formal but if you go on Facebook to the event it has more questions on there about it and you have to wear a mask as well but mostly everyone will be dressing up formal for it.

The events are the same. The MerSquerade Ball will be held at the Carolina SciQuarium, part of the Greensboro Science Center (http://www.greensboroscience.org). But have no fear, the night will offer opportunities for all. Want to dance the night away? No worries, we'll have a DJ (the same we will have the night before at the Sheraton mixer/karaoke). Want to grab a snack and watch fish? The 90,000 gallon Shark Reef exhibit is a wonder to behold! Want to interact with aquatic life? The stingray touch tank will be open and it's one of my favorite parts of the SciQuarium!

I know that some people might not be able to make it to NC Mer-Mania 2016 but this is my first event and first time going to this and I don't want to miss it I have been a Mermaid for 5 years now and I just have to go to this I would love to make some new friends and get myself out there more to becoming a professional Mermaid. Fly into "Piedmont Triad International Airport" code PTI. Travis has looked and found flying out of Minneapolis is cheapest but if prices have changed flying out of Des Moines or Rochester is better but not worth spending a lot.


When do activities start?
Are there scheduled activities on Sunday?
What are current Hotel Reservations?


I think we want to fly in the on Thursday then Fly out on Monday.

I’m probably more likely to die from every pilot on the plane having a heart attack at once than I am from a foreign terrorist. Probably more likely to die here in the DSM area…there was a second shooting in Waukee in three weeks or so. Heck in 2013 more people died by toddlers with guns than in the Boston Marathon bombing. Statistically Im not worried, I have yet to take my happy meds for the day.

I'm taking three just to get from Hawaii to Florida to see my family for xmas, THEN flying to Georgia to drive down with my friend to North Carolina since it solved the renting a car problem. I've filed all the admission requests and working to get the last minute folks their confirmation email to them.

I have 3 forms needed to be signed. If you can print them out, sign them, and present them when you arrive and you can breeze through check-in. If not, we will have ample copies of the forms that you can read over and sign at the hotel on friday night or the GAC on Sat/Sun.

Form #1: Legal Release, Its done, I'll post it here.
Form #2: Media/Photography/Advertising Release. (Basically, we can use your likeness in future advertising, most all comic/anime cons have this)
Form #3: Code of Conduct (most comic/anime cons have this too, mostly no harassing the cosplayers)
