As a community i see alot of merfolks with many different types/colors and patterns, I wanted to know what inspires or inspired your tail color/design. Was it an animal /plant or other?

Pictures are always appreciated as well. I also think this would help those who are undecided on their tails to get inspiration for their future tails in everything they see.

**For me I am going to have a 'special tail' made by a person who I am keeping on the "confidential "at the moment :no-no: nope not saying who. But hopefully all goes well and ill debut it when i go to orlando in late may/early june.

My Tail design came from this beautiful animal:

As for my tail shape i got it from a barracuda, But the only difference is im going for a rough tattered look on my fluke:

My tail was inspired by the koi fish. I hope to make an orca tail soon. :)

Your tail sounds awesome, Lanai! Can't wait to see the finished product :-)

The tail that I'm designing at the moment is really special to me as well. Its very heavily inspired by the artwork of mermaids and "sirens" (post-bird) from fairy-tales and Greek mythology/lore...

I love how their tails sort of start more at the thigh and they're a bit nakey from the waist to the bottom. Obviously I can't be swimming around with my hiney hanging out (Lol!) so I'm going to do sort of an Ombre/dip-dye paint job to get that effect. The actual tail shape that I'm going with though is based on the design of Lenore's tail from Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid for a "vintage" fishy look :-D

@Mermaidondine Wow thats going to be interesting to see im sure, i guess the whole" a womens body as art" and the mermaid "thing" would go fin in fin..lol You could make your taillike lenores but make the waist flesh colored and then fadeinto the color like the sirens. That could be one way to go.

Exactly! I was going to do a nude color/flesh tone around the waist (to match my skin) and then have it ombre/fade into another color around the lower hip/thighs. I'm still not for certain what color quite yet, but I'm leaning toward doing a dark blue-green :-)

My mermaid tail is based on a dolphin's tail. I 've always loved dolphins and when Kingdom Hearts came out and that you can swim around with Sora in a dolphin merman, I was like, I want one too!

I guess I've always been in love with the crazy patterns and colors butterflyfish have... that's why I chose the raccoon butterflyfish as my avatar...
but at the same time, I tend to have difficulty figuring out how to capture such stark patterns on a tail and not make it look "disconnected" from the rather "plain" human torso... and if I have a tail, I would want it to feel and look natural to my body... so it's a hard call. I suppose if you took the time to do makeup to the body to help bring the design into the human half and carry the concept through the whole body it'd be good... but that's a LOT of work!
