View Full Version : How do you pronounce your name?

Mermaid Kelda

With a few meet-ups under my belt, I've noticed it's a common theme to be talking about mers and their tails, and then realise you don't actually know how to pronounce their username. Many are simple and straight-forward, but many aren't. I'd love to know how everyone pronounces their name, so if/when I ever meet you all, I won't feel like a dunce!

Mine's easy, and is said how it's spelled. Kell-da.

Mine is Turkish and is pronounced "eye-soon" but said fairly quickly. There is somewhat equal emphasis on both parts.

More "eyesoon" than "eye-SOOn"

I took my name from a common North American freshwater plant, because that's exactly what I am. Here's the pronunciation (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mlzamyerAY) :)

Mine mer name is taken from the letters of my own name. I like to create fantasy names by adding extra syllables and letters to an existing name. :)
Leina is said Lee-Na

Jaff-fah like the chocolate, not like Stargate Jer-fah.

Well I am just one of the flock.
Actually I probably should have been a mershepherdess, but that was too much to type. I sort of took the image from the end of the Dawn Treader one of the Narnia books where they see a sea girl tending a flock of fish.
There is also a bit mixed in of Psyche and the golden fleece. (why I seem to have a golden tail.) Just looked up the story of Jason and the Argonaut, there are a few ewsome merpeople involved. I guess that would really make me Theophane, although I sometimes use the name Arethusa Fountain, but that gets a bit long to type. Just do not ask me who took the pomegranate pips.

Leina is said Lee-Na

I always read it as "Lay-Na", because that's how it's pronounced in chinese and that was my name when I was living in Asia.

While I won't be at one of the conventions (sadface),
I have wondered what english speakers would make out of my name.

I watched quite a few US movies that contain greek names, and eugh.
Grown accustomed to how they say Zeus as "Zoos" by now and a few others, but I died when they pronounced Iphigenie as "Eye-phai-gene-eye-ee" lol.

Anyway, in my signature is how Echidna is written in greek (Ἔχιδνα) and that's the way it should be pronounced.
The "ch" or "x" does not exist in english, the closest pronunciation would probably be something along the lines of "A Kid-Na", with the k being more of a forced H.

It certainly could be pronounced that way - as a flower lei is said. But because I took Leina from my name Madeleine (Ma-de-line) that is how I chose to have it said... Either is fine though! :D

My name is Kay and it's pronounced just like the letter K. :-)

I took my name from the ancient Greek Goddess Thalia, which was one of the nine Muses, the goddesses of music, song and dance. Her name was derived from the Greek word thaleia, meaning "rich festivity" or "blooming." In Classical times, when the Muses were assigned specific artistic and literary spheres, Thalia was named Muse of comedy and bucolic poetry. In this guise she was portrayed with the attributes of comic mask, shepherd's staff and wreath of ivy.

I dropped the "h" because English speaking people would pronounce it "Zalia", which is not correct. Now it resembles the name of Talia Al Ghoul (the character from Batman comics; she is awesome).

It is pronounced:
Ta as in "talon"; Lee as in "liberation"; A as in "apple": Ta-lee-ah.

Awesome thread! Audiences always want to call me GAY-leen, but it's really Guh-LEEN-ee. I tell them to remember my name sounds like "gull" (the bird) - "LEAN" (like when you're tilting to one side) - "knee" (a part on a leg, which mermaids don't have  ).

In Spanish, Rain + ah reads as Reina = Queen

I used to use Nimu la Mer, but it seems no one can pronounce Nimu (Nim oo ay).

Pearlie Mae is plain and simple.

Oh your names' pronounce is so cool and interesting!
And this makes you understand some things about the languages of so many people!

Mine is one of the most simple as I'm Italian and we read only few words differently from how they're written.

So mine is written Kassandra and is pronounced in the same way it's written Kassandra 😐

Vrin-DAH-van, or vrin-DAH-van-a. Vrindavana is Sanskrit for an ancient forest village in India. It's still a village with deep spiritual significance, on the Yamuna river, but less of a forest now. It is also the name of the goddess of the same name, one of the gopis, or milkmaids, of the area.

I can. But then everyone would ask you how is Merlin?

RNHime

I like threads like this, too! I don't have a mersona name, but my username is "R, N, he-may". Hime is Japanese, it means princess, though the title is used not so much like the traditional European "princess" term. Instead it's more of an "any pretty girl" thing. =P

I try to keep screen names as short as possible for ease of typing!!

Happy to see I got almost every name spot-on already.

Might be different if there were more peeps using gaelic or welsh names.
Czech is sometimes baffling too. hehe

RomanLaveau

My first one is easy Roman (Roe-man), some might put a hispanic flow on it and say (Roe-mun), and my last name is french and its pronounced Laveau (Luh-voe), after the voodoo queen, Marie Laveau!

totally was wondering if it was after Marie Laveau!
I go by mermaid Mystery, like "mist-er-ee" you can call me Stella (st-el-uh) or Claire (kl-air)

I can. But then everyone would ask you how is Merlin?

I caught that reference too and your response made me giggle. For anyone familiar with those legends it wouldn't of been a hard name.

Mine is pretty simple too but most people see all the vowels and panic. Its based off of a character I had a dream about when I was in high school. It is pronounced: Sail-Yuh

MermaidAine

Mine is Celtic which means it sounds nothing like it looks. And honestly, I can't even explain how it is actually pronounced so I just say it is pronounced Anya or On-ya.

Mermaid Lorelei
10-27-2015, 06:08 PM
I tend to stick with lore-ih-lie. It can also be pronounced lore-lei (like a flower necklace).

Mermaid Freyja

"Frey-yuh"
Using one of the old spellings; Freyja is a Norse goddess associated with love, sexuality, beauty, fertility, gold, war, and death.

Mermaid Enhydrina

This is a really helpful idea. :)

My mer name is the genus of (I believe) only two sea-snake species. I couldn't find a proper pronunciation of it so I've always said it phonetically: En-high-dree-nuh.

New York Mermaid

Lanai is pronounced - Luh- N- Eye

That's how I pronounce it

Ashton
11-02-2015, 07:19 PM
Mine is pronoced: Ash-ton
Like Ashton Kutcher, except I am a girl.

Gender normative names are fun, but I still can't find a keychain or any rinky-dink souvenir that says my name :(

Ilyena

Try Anastasia or Annise...it's nowhere to be found.

Ily-eh-nah
Like Lilly without the 'L'
