View Full Version : The Triton - Human Gills

OHMYGOODNESS! Anyone else seen this yet? I apologize if it is super old but I didn't see a thread about it already! Obviously the device is not yet perfected or for sale, but this little device removes the need for an air tank for long-term diving. I think it could be decorated up with seashells or fake seaweed to make a gorgeous accessory for ocean diving :D

I'm pretty sure that that is only a conceptual project (and the design bears a striking resemblance to something Team Rocket wears in an episode of Pokémon at one point) based around "psuedoscience." It's not a real thing, and not going to be a real thing, and there are countless articles debunking this. This user on IMGUR (http://imgur.com/gallery/vesIM) does a good job of explaining how unrealistic the Triton is.
You'd have to be inhaling approximately 38 litres of water per single breath to filter enough oxygen through it to not drown.
It's cool, but it's garbage. I hate when things like this get shared around. :/

Uhm, I am sorry if my interest in this has offended you.
A prototype has been built from what I can gather, it is not functioning yet but has the parts and scale to work.

Nah, you didn't do anything wrong. Honestly this has been floating around for well over a year now and I'm just kind of tired of seeing people tossing around the same articles and expecting me to be excited by an obvious fraud.
It's just that it's been debunked, over and over, and that many of the parts and equipment that the "Designer" claims the Triton has don't exist. A prototype means nothing if it's pure psuedoscience and for all this "designer"'s talk, there's no proof that a physical copy, prototype or not, was even built, much less that it works on any level. Every photo and video clip that's shown this thing has been purely CG-rendered. There's no solid evidence or science backing this thing up, and every article supporting it using vague phrasing like "claims" and "allegedly." I don't know a single professional diver who doesn't see this as anything other than a fantasy at best, or a scam at worst.
I just get really bugged by things like this. People get hyped up, and either nothing comes of it or someone (whether it's the original designer or someone else making a knockoff) actually puts out a physical product that claims to work, when it doesn't, then people shell out insane amounts of money on a falsely-advertised product that, in this case, could kill somebody.

Ooohh. Yeahh. That thing is pure science fantasy, unfortunately. That Imgur post that Tieri linked does an excellent job of explaining why, so you should read it if you haven't already. And then read up on Boyle's Law to further understand the science and the challenges behind breathing underwater. We're not trying to gang up on you, just trying to prevent the spread of misinformation.
And just as an aside, apart from being a scientist and experienced diver I have spent many years working with aquariums and cleaning out massive amounts of aquarium filtration.....and all I can think about when they mention a filter that can trap individual oxygen molecules (?!?) is how much CRAP is going to clog that filter immediately. You'd have to have several prefilters at least the size of scuba tanks to purify the water enough before it even reached the oxygen filter part. In which case, what would be the point? Also...breathing pure oxygen for extended periods of time is SO not good for you. Remember that the air we breath is mostly nitrogen (78%) and only 21% oxygen. There would be no way for that device to produce actual breathable air. I'll keep my tank and my BCD and my regs any day.

In my opinion that kinda looks like a 'workout' snorkel.

Yep, that's just a fancy snorkel.

Yea but its as real its gonna get. Unless someone makes gilly weed a reality.

Good point, not including breathing compressed air underwater (which is really fun btw, I don't know what the big deal is).

I have always wondered about compressed air...
But when it comes to the fancy workout snorkel, whats the hard part about turning your head to the side and breathing?... i feel like they made a thing that does not really serve a new function or better an existing product. It just makes me feel like they were thinking
"You know what I hate about swimming? Turning my head for a second to breath!" *insert as seen on tv footage of people failing at basic tasks*

Some people don't have the full use of their body, so turning their necks to breathe might be too hard or painful. And others like me, who never did any swimming classes, so don't know how to do the rotary breathing, that might be useful too.

Freestylers and sidestrokers all know about turning their heads to breathe. Breaststroke calls for lifting up the head and neck. Backstroke (both back crawl and elementary backstroke) are the easiest when it comes to surface breathing--there is no head and neck turning or lifting whatsoever.

Maybe not now, but I believe that there will be small devices for breathing underwater at sometime. It may not use compressed air, or work like gills. They might not even last very long, but even if there was something the size of a swim mask that gave you five minutes worth, it would be cool.

I think so too. Remember when CDs, DVDS, media players, playstation etc were just things you saw in movies. Even those dorky cassette players were stuff you only saw in old black n white movies, until they became a reality that everyone had one and could play their fave music or books, and could play it everywhere they went and also record sounds and stuff.
