Many of us have pets that have died. So I am thinking of this as more of a memorial to them. Feel free to share a story about a favorite pet that has moved you.
I mentioned in one of my threads that we have (Had?) a koi pond. On the day I had my first fabric tail swim the one remaining koi splashed me.
Sadly, last week something managed to get through the netting on this pond. Probably a raccoon, although we have fox and coyote in the yard, along with the usual assortment of cats, being that we are 200 feet uphill from a creek. Most mornings the bricks hat hold the netting in place are disturbed. This time the reeds inside the pond were crushed. There was no sign of the fish. Hopefully it went fast. It was an old Koi and had been alone for the last two or three years. While we may anthromophise fish, I am under the impression they have no long term memory and can not be trained to perform tricks.
My father is older now, and has been waiting for the fish to go. I was for pulling out the reeds and cleaning out the pond for new fish. My dad has something better he want to put in the space. So today I set about removing the reeds. Without the reeds the plastic liner leaks, so I guess it is time to let all this go. I am going to miss the fish and the bubbling of the pump. I still turn the fountain on when I am in the yard. (keeps the water from stagnating.) There is still a drought this year. So the water will be useful in the garden.
There was still one more surprise to be had. When I stuck the garden fork (sadly not a trident) into the muck. An old amphora decoration was the first thing that came up. Not sure what that means. Something esoteric i suspect. The pool was 3/4 full of reeds, which provided the fish a place to hide. Took the better part of the day to remove them. I had thought it might be fun to put on my tail and sit in the pond for a photo shoot, but it is way too dirty and the water has an algae smell which penetrated the clothing I was working in. Did make me think that it is better to be a real mermaid like the others here, rather than an actual physical one that smells like a fish, and has to stay wet all the time.
As a pantheistic-polydeist, I believe that all things have souls. While this fish may not rest in peace and probably had a tragic end, may it journey it on it's way to the open waters of the immortal sea of tranquility.
