Many of us have pets that have died. So I am thinking of this as more of a memorial to them. Feel free to share a story about a favorite pet that has moved you.

I mentioned in one of my threads that we have (Had?) a koi pond. On the day I had my first fabric tail swim the one remaining koi splashed me.

Sadly, last week something managed to get through the netting on this pond. Probably a raccoon, although we have fox and coyote in the yard, along with the usual assortment of cats, being that we are 200 feet uphill from a creek. Most mornings the bricks hat hold the netting in place are disturbed. This time the reeds inside the pond were crushed. There was no sign of the fish. Hopefully it went fast. It was an old Koi and had been alone for the last two or three years. While we may anthromophise fish, I am under the impression they have no long term memory and can not be trained to perform tricks.

My father is older now, and has been waiting for the fish to go. I was for pulling out the reeds and cleaning out the pond for new fish. My dad has something better he want to put in the space. So today I set about removing the reeds. Without the reeds the plastic liner leaks, so I guess it is time to let all this go. I am going to miss the fish and the bubbling of the pump. I still turn the fountain on when I am in the yard. (keeps the water from stagnating.) There is still a drought this year. So the water will be useful in the garden.

There was still one more surprise to be had. When I stuck the garden fork (sadly not a trident) into the muck. An old amphora decoration was the first thing that came up. Not sure what that means. Something esoteric i suspect. The pool was 3/4 full of reeds, which provided the fish a place to hide. Took the better part of the day to remove them. I had thought it might be fun to put on my tail and sit in the pond for a photo shoot, but it is way too dirty and the water has an algae smell which penetrated the clothing I was working in. Did make me think that it is better to be a real mermaid like the others here, rather than an actual physical one that smells like a fish, and has to stay wet all the time.

As a pantheistic-polydeist, I believe that all things have souls. While this fish may not rest in peace and probably had a tragic end, may it journey it on it's way to the open waters of the immortal sea of tranquility.

I had a beautiful peacock named Dragon. He had one white eye feather in the center of his train and he had beautiful bright blue eyes. He was always kind to his hens and he was mellow. Then one day I walked into the aviary to feed the peafowl and I found him dead. Later I found out it was two large raccoons that broke into the aviary and killed him. While I like raccoons I certainly don't like them hurting my bird children. :( Anyways, I carried Dragon out and buried him by a fig tree. Every now and then I look at his grave and remember how badly I wanted him and how happy I was when I finally got him. I remember the two great years I had with him. I like to think he now resides in a blooming garden in the sky.

Fortunately, he had a son named Peep. He is a very tame peacock and the best gift his father Dragon could have given me. I am so glad that he lives on through his sweet son Peep.

We had a peacock in the yard for a while that my dad nicknamed looneytoons. I was not living here at the time I think I saw it once on a visit. Now that you mention it, there was a pigeon aviary where the koi pond is. My dad used to raise show pigeons.
