Hi everyone!

My name is Jopie and I'm from the Netherlands. I was referred here by Mermaid Crystal.
I'm 25 years old and I am a student and illustrator and I work in a fantasy shop in Amsterdam. I have always had a big passion for myths, legends and fairytales, and my paintings are greatly influenced by them.
I also photograph and I make costumes and I have a fashion blog on instagram @_fairytalefashion_ where I post my daily outfits, which are also often inspired by mermaids, witches, fairies and the like.

I have been lurking about on facebook for years, admiring tails from tail makers and envying merfolk in silence, watching swimming videos and I love all of them. I'm a bit shy but I confessed my obsession to Mermaid Crystal, whom I know from the Dutch fantasy community, and she gave me loads of info on how to get started, which I am really thankful for! :D I would love to do a freediving course someday if my student budget allows it, and I think I'm going to buy some fins to try out in the local swimming pool next month. I used to love swimming when I was little and as a kid I always wanted to be a marine biologist. I used to watch documentaries about sea life for hours. I would love to pick up swimming again and maybe it'll help me gain some more stamina too.
My dream is to own a Finfolk Productions tail but I don't know if I'll ever be able to fork out the money for that, but hey, we keep dreaming right?

I'm not sure if I am going to be really active here, but I might ask an occasional question and I'll probably lurk around lots, in awe of all your beautiful tails <3

And my most recent painting featuring a mermaid (which is going to be a page on my new website):

Welcome!
Your art & picture are lovely!

Love for marine life, mermaids and mythology seems to go hand in hand ;)

Defninitely buy those fins and see how it goes- it opens up a whole new world even if you never get an expensive tail.

Yeah I was planning on getting some decently priced bifins to practice the dolphin kick (I used to love swimming with those!) and then save up for a monofin and make a fabric tail for it!
I really can't wait. It's just a bummer that I'm broke at the moment and need to wait for my salary. :(

Jopie — You can practice your dolphin kicking with bifins very well--that's what I do, too. Practicing with bifins allows you the option of doing full arm motions of regular swim strokes that swimming with a monofin does not. You can vary your swim workouts with bifins much more than you can with a monofin. When you get your monofin, that will add an additional dimension. There is room for using both bifins and monofins in training for the mer existence! :-)

Thanks for the info! I think I'll just watch lots of youtube instruction videos for the dolphin kick. I want bifins first because I have never used a monofin before and I want to make sure I don't drown while practicing the dolphin kick. Being able to move your feet apart helps with that, or maybe just with the reassurance, haha!
