Hey, just wondering - is this class assuming the participants have no mermaiding experience? Or is it supplementary training for people who might already have tails and want to be better at tricks and character stuff? :)

I'll tell you in three weeks. I signed up for one of their classes. It's being held about a mile from where I live, so I went for it.

The class is for people who know how to swim, but have never done it in a tail.
The instructor started with a basic test, just to insure you really can swim. Across and back the narrow way (25 meters) of the pool.
Next she introduced the motion needed to dolphin kick, in about 5 steps.
Then you put on the tail, and swim with it. I was allowed to use my tail, the one with the Lunocet fin. I promptly tore the skin while putting it on.
After that, we did swimming on your back, then on the side, then doing rolls (face down, then on your side, then on your back, and so on) as you swam.
We also did hand stands, swimming through a hoop, and swimming through a hoop while rolling.
It was alot to pack into 45 minutes, and I became totally exhausted.

The first few swims will knock you out so you end up sleeping earlier than you usually do. Then after it becomes a routine, it won't make you as sleepy and tired as that first time tail swimming.

This was hardly my first time tail swimming. It was my first time tail swimming so vigorously for 45 minutes. For example, on my last cruise, I did two snorkeling excursions, both with the tail, both lasting an hour. I was not tired at all. But I got to stop, float and breathe whenever I wanted.

The difference with the class is a spent quite a bit of time holding my breath. For my entire life, I have always had the issue of getting enough air when it comes to extended physical activity. When I tail swim on my own, I'll do one underwater run, rest for a couple of minutes, then do another. My activity is spread out.

Every weekend I do a 5 to 10 mile hike, 1000 to 2000 feet of altitude gain. But, again, I get to breathe all the time. (And getting enough air still slows me, putting me behind the rest of the group).

I'll see if more swimming helps the issue.
