Tips for getting back into the water- and swimming with a monofin for the first time?

I haven't been swimming in say, four years. I swam every year before that. You see, my neighborhood pool hired lazy lifeguards, and they never cleaned the pool. It wasn't possible to swim without getting a hairball caught on your foot or having a bandaid nearly hit your face or a bug going by. It was disgusting, and I didn't want to swim in water like that. My sister went back the next year (without me, I was sick) and said it was still just as bad. After that, my mom started working over the summer and didn't really have time to take us. I'm old enough now (well okay- I HAVE been old enough technically, but my mom thought I was too young) to go swimming without parental supervision as long as the guard is on duty, and we're moving to a new neighborhood this summer that has a much cleaner pool. But most of all, I kind of lost the motivation to swim- I had no idea tails even existed, so I was bored. It's not that I didn't like swimming, but going around in circles gets boring eventually (I had no friends to swim with). So I never really went to the beach to swim, haha. Finding out monofins existed gave me a whole new motivation to start swimming again.

I was wondering if you guys had any tips for getting back into swimming after a long haitus? I've never swum with a monofin before, and I'm definitley going to get re-acclimated to swimming before I use one (I'm getting it in January! :)) I'd also love tips for swimming in monofins if you can offer any, haha.

Start out slow and do sets of 25s, 50s, 100s, and 200s (yards or meters) of the strokes you like to swim. At first you will feel tired and "winded." When you start NOT to feel "winded," your lungs won't feel tight after your swim sets, and you will actually want to swim MORE sets! :-) You are wise to get back into good physical condition before trying the monofin. Since all monofin kicking is dolphin kicking, you will have to break into doing monofin swimming gradually, too. Best of luck to you as you go forward.

Practice in the shallow end. This time last year, I had a 5 secs breath hold. I swam in waist deep water at my old pool, they had no deep end just a 1.05m depth. And I stuck to one corner as I couldn't swim further than 20cms without running out of air! I am much better now, I swim twice a week, practice in tail and without tail, just monofin. Oh and a 30 sec breath hold

Definitely practice in the shallow end preferably close to a lifeguard just incase (you probably haven't forgotten how to swim but just be safe). Once you feel comfortable swimming again if you have regular swim fins you could practice swimming in those a little and you can even do a dolphin kick in them while you wait on your monofin. If you search Youtube for swimming using a dolphin kick that can help you learn how to swim with a monofin. Also, there are very good Youtube videos that show you how to train to use a monofin in and out of the water and gradually working up to using a monofin.

Yea, I also swam in the lane next to where the lifeguards usually stand. That way if I got in trouble, they could just reach in and grab me. When I felt more confident, I started swimming in the deep end of the competition pool, 2.05m and away from the lifeguards.

One more thing I was wondering about- I'm not planning to try swimming in a full tail until I'm very very comfortable with a monofin, but do any of you know any pools near the Raleigh NC area that allow tails?
