So hi, I'm Megh. It's lovely to meet you all.
So for my character. I was thinking maybe a thief kind of character, the river I live by name translates to water thief so that's where I got this idea from.
I also thought maybe my mersona having a dolphin tail or maybe even a betta fish.
I only really have those ideas and I'm super lost on what to do next.
Any help would be appreciated.
And I'm sorry if you can't really understand me, I'm slightly dyslexic so reading is hard.

Hi Megh! That's a cool idea. I used to have a thief character I played at a renaissance faire, she wasn't a mermaid though.
What about a river pirate? That would mix well with mermaid stuff. There are river dolphins, so having a dolphin tail would be awesome.
Try to come up with answers to questions people will probably ask your "character":
Where are you from?
Have you always been a mermaid?
What do you eat?
What's your favorite thing about being a mermaid?
Are you friends with fish?

I wouldn't so much say a river pirate, maybe more just a pick-pocket.
I know some dolphins (individuals not breeds) are known for taking things such as a buoys.

And to answer your questions.
Where are you from? stays mostly around Foveaux Strait.
Have you always been a mermaid? No.
What do you eat? blue cod and mussels.
What's your favorite thing about being a mermaid? being able to explore the oceans.
Are you friends with fish? I have a few fish friends.

So it sounds like you live in an estuary or a salty river place, since you're from a river and like exploring the oceans :) maybe a coastal jungle mermaid?

Foveaux Strait is the sea between the South Island of New Zealand and Stewart Island, I live around 2 hours from it, or there are the Fjordlands about an hour and a half away.
We don't really have coastal jungle here, the estuary near Invercargill is just sand and some grassland around it.
The reason I say she eats blue cod and mussels is because the Foveaux Strait is known for it's blue cod and green-lip mussels.
I had this idea where she is cursed, New Zealand has a lot of things that are tapu, sacred or special. Have any of you seen the movie Whale Rider? it kind of explains tapu, korero purakau and aroha.
So my idea was that she took something from the beach and it cursed her, or something along those lines.

I like it! Can she get legs when she wants them? Does she know other mermaids? Can she breathe water or does she hold her breath like a whale? Those are some of the questions I get. Does she like to steal shiny things? Does she go after things that have worth or things she thinks are cool? What does she do with the stuff she steals?
It sounds like a fun character.

She can have legs for one week every fortnight and that can be at any time she likes during the fortnight but it must all add up to one week and if she tries to go over then she can't and will either turn back into a mermaid or stay being a mermaid.
I would say no, all the New Zealand mermaids seem to be up the north of the country in warmer waters.
She can't breath underwater but she can hold her breath for a very very long time. so Yes, like a whale.
She likes to steal shinny things as they are easier to find in the water and she either kept them on her or hides them in a special spot, If they are of worth she sells them when she goes onto land.

I'm having issues with this myself lol. I have a large scar across my stomach from when I was operated on as an infant and I thought that maybe it could be from a fishing hook that snagged me in the ocean? I'm into natural looking tails with silver and dark blues in them, but location is difficult as I don't really live anywhere close to water yet though I'll be moving to florida.

I had a friend that also had a large surgery scar on her stomach from when she was a baby. When I first saw it I thought she was in a boating accident. And if your moving to Florida that wouldn't be that far off, so many manatees get hit by boats. If you ever perform there professionally it'd be a great way to educate on boating responsibility in Florida waters
