View Full Version : Which Monofin is better?

I have been wanting to buy a fabric tail and between my two choices, I wasn't sure which one had the best monofin.
One has the Finis Aquarius Monofin and the other is the monofin by FinFun.
I've heard the finfun one is not very durable and has weak propulsion, while the strap on the Aquarius slips off at times.
If you have any experience with either of these monofins, I would like to hear your opinions. :)

I've tried the fun fun and it's cheap but effective, I haven't heard much about the Aquarius.

I have an Aquarius and like it. The ankle strap doesn't stay on unless you add another strap, though. The rubber has started ripping away from the footpockets on mine though, so I don't think the fin holds up to really heavy use.
I don't know much about the FinFun monofin, never used it myself.

I never had an aquarius monofin, but it looks like it is a very good monofin, and great for fabric tails because the straps are seem easier to pull back up if they fall off. The finfun monofin, although I haven't had any experience with one, doesn't look like it has very good propulsion, and it looks like it might be harder for any ocean swimming (if you plan to do any). I've never had either of these monofins, but from experience with the finis wave, I know that the straps/strap that holds in your feet can slip off, which is kind of annoying at times, but with a fabric tail the starps are easier to pull back on, unlike with a silicone tail. (As it would seem) Between the two, I'd say start with the aquarius monofin, or buy a fabric tail from Mermaid Kat. The monofins sold at her onlne shop have very good propulsion, (I know this because my current tail is a Mermaid Kat tail) and are very durable (as long as you rinse it after swimming in salt or chlorine water). They have great, strong propulsion, and are definitely on the less expensive side for their amazing quality, so if you are buying a tail online, either go with any shop that has aquarius monofins, finis wave monofins, or Mermaid Kat's shop, with great diving monofins. I wish I knew that brand names of the Mermaid Kat monofins, but oh well. :p Good luck with your tail buying!

the ones Kat sells are Triton (kid-size), Hydra (woman-size) or Minos (man-size), they are from the company 'so dive' ;) http://www.scubastore.com/scuba-diving/fins-monofins/1081/s#ajax
I have a Triton and I really love it :thumbs up::mermaid kiss:

With the Fin Fun monofin, your feet will slip out of the fin if you kick too hard.

I use finfun monofin because I have wide feet. The propulsion is less then finis but I haven't had slippage issues.

I was thinking of the old plastic one they used to have. Haven't got the new one, is there more grip?

I really love my Fin Fun mono personally, but it really isn't suited for heavy swimming as it's basically a piece of plasticky material covered by thin-ish neoprene, extremely lightweight, so no good if you want to swim in the ocean, where you'll need a higher-quality mono. How much, and where do you plan on swimming? If you want to do a lot of swimming, especially in the ocean, you're probably better off with the Finis.
So what's the Fin Fun good for anyway? I love it because it's much more lightweight and comfortable than the heavier, more expensive monofins, which makes it ideal for dry shoots and dipping my fluke in shallow water. It's really designed for children who want to splash around in a shallow pool, NOT for serious free diving. It should be OK though if you're new to monofin swimming and just wanna kinda test the waters, and/or if you plan on doing plenty of dry shoots and such and would live it to be light and comfy to wear out of the water too.
