Hi everyone!

You might remember last year that many of you helped my company do this amazing booking for Girl's Empowerment. Well, we're doing it again!

The Girl's Empowerment Weekend is a workshop we put on in connection with the Potash Civic Group for underprivileged girls. The idea is that through a mermaid workshop the girls will develop sisterhood and gain confidence in physical fitness through mermaid swimming. They'll also be learning mermaid safety.

We do this booking at a lower cost as the company putting it on does it non-profit to help the community. They are getting sponsorship to help cover paying us.

Sean, Mermaid Ama, Merwrangler Steve, and I will all be travelling to NB in the dead of winter (last year we went through a snowstorm) to do this event where we'll be spending two full days on workshops.

Last year people from the mercommunity helped us out so much! People made us tails for the kids and sent them, gave us items for our treasure bin, sent us kid's monofins, and at the end of the gig a few amazing people sent me money so I could buy my team supper (we still talk about that! It was super nice of all of you).

We'd love to utilize the mermaid community help again! If you'd like to help us make this event here are some things that can be done to help:

1. We need kid's monofins! Either finis, or bodyglove will do. If you have one kicking around you don't need and feel like you might want to donate it, or if you'd like to donate some money so we can buy one that would be amazing.
Finis has multiple discount codes that can be used, and those of you in America can get fins drastically cheaper than we can!

2. If you'd like to send us trinkets to go in our treasure bin to give out to kids. Last year Jamie made a bunch of bracelets and the kids LOVED them. But really anything is great. We expect 100 kids but don't feel you need to make or send 100 things. We let the kids choose things out of the bin. We'll also accept mermaid postcards (not business cards) if you'd like us to give the kids pics of you!

3. fabric tails for kids with open end (don't need a monofin). Lots of the kinds can't do the full on tail swimming and like to try out the tail with access to their feet. Sizes can be generic. We have been making some of our own but can always use more! The event is pretty hard on the gear and we end up losing some of it by the time it's done.

4. If you feel comfortable donating $$ it will all go toward our expenses such as making our own tails, and buying treasure bin items locally, and possibly covering some of our meals that won't be covered during our stay.

I've got a couple of friendship bracelets that I've made that I'm willing to give away. But they are not chlorine or saltwater proof. You can get them wet, but I haven't gone swimming with them on, or tested for color fastness.

Will there be non-swimming options too? I know I can be kind of a broken record about that issue so I don't want to offend you or anyone else or anything like that, but I believe very strongly that just wearing a tail can be just as empowering as swimming in it. I know you're very passionate about this Raina, so I'm sorry to be touchy and rain on your parade like this but specifying that "tail SWIMMING" is empowering just doesn't sit well with me...

Not for this event. This event is designed to promote physical fitness which is too hard to do dry with this many children and be safe.

Our company does plenty of dry events.

Yeah, never mind, it does sound like it would be awkward to incorporate certain stuff into this specific event.

When my insecurities got to me, I remembered something that I think is EXTREMELY important: what I love about being a dry mer is I love thinking outside the box and thinking up very unique and original ways of using my tail, I've always loved creativity and imagination so in a way I think for me it's more fun to come up with creative ways to use my tail than just swimming like everyone else. When I'm in my tail, I don't feel deprived of not being able to swim because I just have too much fun doing my own thing. I meditate in-tail, I do leg lifts and tail flip exercises, I love finger-brushing my hair as that's just as stereotypically associated with merfolk as swimming is. I'm always thinking of what else I can do in it that's just as rewarding and worthwhile to me as swimming is for others. I think it's important for me to embrace and enjoy my uniqueness. My bucket list goal is to attend a mer-event and sit on the stairs of the pool and watch everyone else swim.

Hello fellow mer-family, hope it's ok to post this here!Tomorrow Sean Norman, Mermaid Ama and I are off to the girl's empowerment workshop 3.5 hours away in another province. We do this amazing workshop which empowers young girls toward mermaid swimming and spends the weekend trying to build up their self esteem and body image. We do this event a little under at cost as the event is non profit. So many awesome mers brought me gifts for the girls when I went to mermania. A few people sent us donations so we could purchase materials that Mermaid Mimi turned into "burner" kid's tails (aka 100 kids will use em by the end of the weekend so they're likely to be totally destroyed like last year). If you'd like to chip in a few sand dollars (if you're american your dollar is worth so much more, $10 is almost 20 to us!) Sean and I will be making our last run for supplies tomorrow afternoon before we leave. We have signed photos for every single girl, treasures, a fabric tail, and we're using our monofins from Mermaid Linden. I documented last year's event on MerNetwork and spoke about this years even this morning on the news. This is a cause I really believe in, and if it was a for profit event I'd be charging a heck of a lot more. But I don't want these girls to miss out, and not only that with all the drama around monofins this is a great way for us to show how well they can be used while the news is watching!Donations can be sent to my paypal donation button at the bottom of this page.
