Chemi tries to make a fabric tail!

Hey friends!
So I just finished high school and exams a few weeks ago, and now I have enough free time to get started on my mermaid tail! :yay:

Since I have literally no experience in tail-making (I haven't even seen one in real-life) I figured I'd start out in the shallow end. This means I have pretty much no idea what I'm doing, so any tips or words of advice would be majorly appreciated. I've researched as much as I can around the forum and YouTube and such, but I'm still not that confident.

I really love seals, so I decided to go with a seal tail. This is a quick sketch of what I hope I can make:

As I'm a poor child, I bought a pair of bifins for $40 instead of a monofin, which would have been at least $100 including shipping. However, this also means my tail (if I don't mess it up) will be SLIGHTLY more anatomically correct, and that makes me more happy than it should. I've tested the fins out in the pool, and I can swim quite well in them, and I can keep my legs together for the most part (I haven't really figured out treading water yet :sweat drop:). Hopefully, I can make a tail out of bifins, and still be able to swim in it.

Right now, I think I have all the materials I'll need. I have the fins, 3mx1.4m of lycra fabric, paper to make the pattern, fabric paint, and I'm going to borrow my friends sewing machine. If I have forgotten something super important, please tell me!!

I'm so excited to start making my tail, hopefully I'll get it done by the time summer comes!!

Stretch needle for the sewing machine and 100% Guttermann Polyester thread. I use Guttermann because they are good quality at an affordable price. And polyester thread so it doesn't rot and break easily.

Really? I got my bifins from rebel sport, but I didn't see any monofins. I guess I must have been in the wrong area haha. But the Mirage fin looks quite nice!! I'll definitely give it a go once I finish this tail :)
Sorry if this a silly question, but what do you mean by a stretch needle?? Is it an actual machine needle? Or a type of stitch? I've heard of using zig-zag stitches to sew stretchy fabrics?? Oh god, sorry for all the questions *hides*

Use a stretch needle for the sewing machine. If you use a regular sewing needle to sew lycra, the fabric goes all funny and the needle can get stuck. Alot.
I get these. Both sizes fit in my machine.

Oh I see! Should I use a stretch/zigzag stitch too?? Or is a straight stitch fine??

UPDATE:
I cut out my pattern!
I plan to just fold the fabric in half and place it on the fold, so its perfectly symmetrical c: You can see the fabric I'm using next to the pattern and my fin as well.
I'm honestly so nervous about messing the tail up, I left like 5cm of "seam allowance" haha.
I'll update again once I cut out my fabric pieces!!

You'll pretty much always want to use a zig-zag when sewing stretch material (unless you happen to have stretch thread). Straight stitches in stretch material will snap when the material stretches and the thread doesn't.

I don't think anyone else has made an "anatomically correct" selkie tail yet
(which is strange, as bifins are easy to get and just scream selkie).

You could make cool swimming videos when you turn your feet out in the tail and vary the normal dolphinkick a bit!
Treading water in fins is exhausting and can only be done in deep enough water.
In a pool, most of the time you're better off simply floating on your back (also very seal-like ;) )

As for seam allowance; don't put too much unless the fabric is non-stretchy.
Otherwise you will get many wrinkles or have to re-sew the tail to be less loose.

I'm always scared of drifting into people or things when I'm on my back so I usually just hang onto the sides of the pool or something lmao. I'm sure if I practice more, I'd be more comfortable floating on my back though!
The massive seam allowance I gave myself is because I'm so scared of cutting out too little fabric and then having to start over. By giving myself way too much seam allowance, I can just take it in over and over. I don't really mind re-sewing that much, as long as my tail fits me.

I cut out my fabric pieces! I already know that they're way too wide, but I'm excited to sew it together with a basting stitch or something to try it on!!

I also made a top using a bra, which I just hot-glued the off-cuts of the tail fabric on. I'm not sure how well it'll hold up underwater, but I guess I'll just try it out and see.

Hot glue doesn't stretch and won't last in chlorine water. Best to sew the straps to the bra with zigzag stitch.

UPDATE-ish:
Ok so I finally got my fins on a sewing machine! I borrowed it from a friend. I also bought some stretch needles for it.
Except I've hit a major roadblock...
When I use a zigzag stitch on the lycra, using the stretch needle, the machine skips stitches! So my zigzag stitch has parts of straight stitching!!
So instead of /\/\/\/\/\/\/\ I get /\__/\/\/\__/\ (if that makes any sense)
I'm not sure if it'll make a huge difference to the stretch of the tail, because there is still zigzag stitching in there???
If anyone has any tips or can solve my problem I'll love you forever <33

My machine does the same thing when it gets in a mood, it should be okay if the skipped stitches are infrequent. When in doubt, do a test stitch and stretch the crap out of it.

Number one cause of this is usually a dull needle. (But you're using brand new needles, so prob not) You might also try cleaning out the bobbin compartment and fiddling with the tension.

YOU GUYS ARE LEGENDS!!
I retreaded the machine and turned the tension all the way down and it works perfectly!! No more skipped stitches and it seems to be much stretchier too, win win!!
I quickly stitched together my two tail pieces, and tried it on. Boy did I underestimate the stretch! I made the pattern up to my waist, but the tail stretches past my shoulders easily!!! So the next step is to start taking it in slowly and surely I'm a little nervous because I've got next to no sewing experience, let alone sewing "clothing".
I'm so excited!! My tail is finally coming together!!!

A little side note, my family and I are going to New Zealand in a few days, so while I'm crazy excited to go back, I'm sort of bummed I won't be able to work on my tail u vu

MAJOR UPDATE:
Ok, so I took the tail in enough to fit really snugly. Its super comfortable and I really wish i could wear it around the house, but its so damn difficult to walk in.35300
Im not 100% happy with the flippers, so i think ill go and buy some snaps or velcro to hold it closed a bit better, while still being able to take the fins out.
After i fix up the flippers, itll be painting time!!!

About the stretch - that always happens to me! I make tails for my sisters and they come up to their armpits! Now I know to trim them down after trying on! :D

UPDATE:
I sort of gave up on the fins and just sewed them closed. I can still get the flippers in and out from the top opening though, it's just a little more fidgety.

All thats left now is to shorten up the whole tail, Im not sure whether I'll cut it off and hem it, or just fold it down when I'm swimming.
