View Full Version : Mermaid Amelia Pond's Silicone Tail Journey
Mermaid Amelia Pond

Hey merfolk I'm working on my own silicone tail. It's been a process already! And I only have a few months to get it ready for the Muskogee Renaissance Festival in May It will be peacock colors at least that's the plan.
I want more sparkle and iridescence in the scales and I'm just not getting that just yet. I have so many scales to do and it feels like I'm years away when I only have months left! *gulp*

Wow, I love the detail in your scales.

Those are some beautifully modelled scales! Here's a quick tip...cool your mold in the fridge, the clay will come out in big chunks, scrape out what you can, use oil (baby, vegetable, mineral) and an old toothbrush to scrub out the rest. Then clean your mold with original Dawn blue dishwashing liquid and rinse!
Um...if you work in that tail every day for 8 to 10 hours a day, you MIGHT have it done by May. You've got a lot of work ahead of you. Good luck!

Thanks Pearlie Mae!
I really need to make another mold, but with more scales on them. I got your instagram message too, I'll place them closer together next go around too. And the olive oil you suggested worked wonders. And I did wash the mold outside so I don't clog the sink with the clay.

Do the scales look a little to thick to anyone else, or is it just because the picture was taken super close up? Does that affect layering?

They were part of my first pulls my husband did. Which is why I didn't mind using as testers for top coat stuff. He's learning to to help me make sure I get them done in time.

While I"m waiting for the big silicone order I'm trying to get my fluke hashed out n make more molds of the scales so it will go faster. I just really feel like I'm failing at getting the fluke designed. I could certainly go with a basic tail if all else fails but I want to do something different.
I'm going to do my top in a very drapey fabric like this one i saw on Rosegal with a finned collar. Drapey necklaces are in my future too. So if you awesome mers have any ideas or suggestions I'd love to hear it. I've been pouring over fish photos and mer drawings and art deco architecture trying to find my fluke.

Yikes! I've worked with that stuff before and it's not fun to wrestle once dry. Sorry about that. But your scales look ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. I can already tell your tail is going to be 50 shades of fintastic! I see so many people make beautiful silicone creations and it tempts me to try my hand at it.
But that's a different venture down the road once I've already got my first silicone tail and the boyfriend and I have relocated and yadda yadda yadda.
Until then, I'll live vicariously through you. ;)

While at work (call center) I've been cleaning out another mold. So I can make more scales daily. I thought I'd be done before the silicone got here but I was dragging my feet. And this one had lots of bubbles. I think I can save it by filling in the bubbles with resin once cleared out.

Your scales look AMAZING! I love how they look all laid out.
I can't for the life of me figure out why you had such big bubbles in your resin molds, though. If you do nails, that powder and liquid they use to make acrylic nails might fill in those gaps, rather than mix tiny batches of resin...you'll get more of a working time and mix as you go along. BUT test it first to make sure there are no curing issues.

That coral stuff is new to Michael's craft store, I found it last month and bought it all (coupons and teachers discounts!) I started making a top using it. It is so cool! I love it, I hope they make more and in more colors... Mine had some weird white dust on them though (maybe from molding process). I tried washing it and it didn't completely come off. I just said "Oh Well" and incorporated it into my design.

Yes I'd also be interested in tips for how to best fit for a fluke. Specifically how loose or tight should one aim for the fluke to be fitted to the monofin? How much space where water sloshes around is normal and does it add significant drag if the monofin is not snugly wrapped?
Beautiful and unique fluke design btw!
PearlieMae
02-17-2016, 12:24 PM
There should be drainage channels included in the fluke design so the water pressure of swimming pushes the water out. There should be NO water inside the fluke sloshing around. The fluke should fit tightly to the fin as if it is all one piece.

I have also been wondering about the flue monofin conundrum. Are you supposed to glue to fluke to the monofin with silicone or just make sure it's tight enough that water doesn't get in there? And what do people make the drainage channels with...long straws?! Lol
Mermaid Amelia Pond
02-21-2016, 10:51 AM
I'm going to drill holes through the monofin so the silicone can adhere around it well. The drain holes from one tail maker used wooden skewers then removed the skewers once cured

Someone on youtube (I forget who) used strips of plastic from a binder, glued around it for the channels, and then pulled them out. Her tail was latex so I'm not sure if this could work for a silicone tail so I figured I'd throw it out there.
Ashton
02-21-2016, 12:26 PM
I drilled holes and did that for my very first tail (a very long time ago), just aware that if light shines thought your tail you will see the holes. I will say you are better off not doing that because also when you move the fluke will shift and it will (over time) the edges will slice though the silicone in the hole. The monofin will stay in the fluke just fine on its own.
PearlieMae
02-21-2016, 12:35 PM
Channels don't need to be tubes, per se, just areas from the foot area through the fluke/fin to the edge off the fluke, where it's not physically attached.
Mermaid Jessica laid plastic rulers inside her flukes, then pulled them out once silicone cured. Not sure how she adheres the fluke to her fins, or what fins she uses, but I suspect she uses the Lace Method.

That jellyfish top is so cute!
I've been thinking over the different options for sticking the silicone to the monofin as well. I don't want to drill holes because I know that will weaken the fin. From what I can gather, laying a piece of fabric on the back of the silicone as it cures and then glueing the fabric side to the fin seems the best way to go. I'm thinking if you use a non-stretch fabric and pull it tight over the fin, that should stop it ballooning even if hardly any of the fabric is actually stuck to the fin.
(I haven't reached the fluke on my first tail, though, so I can only guess!)

That is actually a good way to do it I think. I've heard of that and forgot until you mentioned it! The fabric could add extra grip if you need it but silicone WILL cure to itself and be very secure. You might get ballooning though

I just cover the back pin them down all around the edges and allow to cure. I've had to touch up a few places but over all it works well as a process. I was worried about the security of them which is why I took the bottom and stuck my hand up in it. I'm not worried about it now it felt very secure! Loads of stretch and give too. Yikes!! We don't get June bugs over here - thankfully! I hope that wasn't a sculpt...
My first encounter with June bugs was using pool noodles to rescue them from drowning in my aunt and uncles pool in Oklahoma. I had no idea they could do that to clay - it's actually quite impressive!

I'm in Oklahoma actually and they are all over right now, they really are drawn to the porch lights.
The June bugs are beetles.
And thankfully it was into the dam around the outside of my fluke not into the design part

I'm glad the sculpt is ok! After putting in all that work I think I'd have cried and thrown a temper tantrum if a bug had burrowed into it!
Whenever I've been over its always been in summer and there was never a shortage of June bugs! They really seemed drawn to the pool lights - shame they didn't seem able to swim... [emoji38]

My youngest is terrified of the beetles .... and cicadas even if they don't bite, pinch or sting he screams. He's just not into bugs. He loves mermaids n mermen.
He is wanting to learn to sign hello merman to a merman he looks up to who happens to be deaf but I've not seen how to sign that for him and he is french so ... even harder to look up.
