This exercise is best done when your home is nice and quiet. I put a CD of wave sounds I bought at Target a few years ago on the stereo(I personally find playing a CD on the stereo is better for the immersive experience that fiddling with an MP3 player and earphones). You can even go all out and surround yourself with objects that make you feel mermaidy such as shells, plush sea creatures, or whatever. Sit in your tail, close your eyes, and visualize. What to visualize? Well, that's up to you, but for me a common theme is rebirth and rejuvanation. Imagine your past worries melting away and being born again as a new version of yourself, emerge from the waves like Venus in mythology and be reborn as a new improved version of yourself. Imagine yourself as a mermaid singing, luring all your worries, stresses, and insecurities to the bottom of the sea, never to be seen again and eaten by hungry bottom feeders. ;)
Also for me another theme is seeking peace and harmony in my life. I always imagined merfolk to live together with sea creatures in perfect harmony, and in meditation one can learn from that ideal and try to apply it to real life by meditate reminding yourself to seek peace and harmony in life. Of course it's very individual though, so you can come up with the themes that are important and relevant to you and your life. How do you imagine merfolk to be like, and what life lessons can you learn from them? When you think of the ocean and its creatures, what comes to mind and what values can you draw from that? If you're a religious person, feel free to incomporate themes of your religion into it if you wish.
You can also incorporate physical exercise into the routine by flicking or lifting your tail.
This is a good thing especially to do during the winter for those of you out there who are bummed about not being able to swim more when it's cold outside. You can do it once a week, every day, whatever, try it for a while and see if it improves your mental state.

Good to see you back! :)

Sometimes I just listen to a track of ocean waves to help me relax.

A bit of advice though: it has come to my attention that some tails, such as the high-end silicone ones, are very heavy on land. I would suggest in that case that this exercise is best done in a lightweight fabric tail. I know many people own both the expensive silicone's and the low-end "starter" tails, so if that's you, go with the starter for this exercise. You'll be much more comfortable, which makes it MUCH easier to focus to meditation

I decided I'd rather call myself a "mermaid who swims through the waters of meditation and imagination" rather than a "dry mermaid". "Dry mermaid" draws attention to what I don't and can't do, where the former celebrates what I CAN do. I think it's much better to draw attention to what you can do that what you can't do

Guess who just edited the "mermaiding" page on Wikipedia to now say "wearing, often including swimming" in a mermaid tail. Guess who just edited the mermaiding page on Wikipedia to now say "wearing, often including, swimming a mermaid tail" instead of only swimming. I also added in the section on modern use "Although the vast majority of mermaiders swim in their tail, a small handful of prolific members of the mermaiding subculture do not actually swim. At least one somewhat well-known professional mermaid goes into the water to pose, but does not actually swim in her tail. These mers might promote activities such as mermaid-themed meditation or don tails in order to raise awareness for ocean conservation issues, as do many swimming mers". Hopefully no one will edit it back

Someone edited it to say more about mermaid-themed photo shoots, which is perfectly fine as it's more relevant to what most mers do. I guess I just had meditation on my mind after reading this thread haha ;), but the new wording reads better and feels more relevant
