A Crippled Mermaid!

I broke my ankle a couple months ago, and I am starting physical therapy next week. I can't wait to get back in my fins! It has been FAR TOO LONG!!! I am going stir crazy for the pool! (since the lake is only 30 degrees!) But I am worried that I could re-damage the joints and muscles if I get back in my tail! Has any one broken their ankle or leg and gotten back in their tails? Got any advice or helpful tips for me? :(​

Even if you cannot swim for the time being, you can still wear your tail. :) I have started other threads on that very topic, as well as a very recently posted article on Raina's "Learn to Be a Professional Mermaid page" but in a nutshell, even if you are unable to swim for a while, you can still be a mermaid by doing dry photo shoots, doing mermaid-themed meditation, chilling on the couch and watching The Little Mermaid or Splash in your tail, and more! :) So in short there's no reason why you can't wear your tail now if you want to. If you're sure you cannot swim now, use this opportunity to expand your horizons a bit and find new ways to mermaid. Good luck! :mermaid kiss:

my advice is this:

physio can be painful, sometimes you need to HURT in order to HEAL. Try not to get discouraged and force yourself to go. I always found I had a hard time going to physio because it's slow and hurts and I want to be better, and I already hurt so why hurt more? but the truth is, you gotta get those muscles and tendons back to their right spots, so it's important to do what the doc says even though it might hurt. and before you know it you'll be back to yourself in no time!

Ooh didn't think of that! That is actually why though I've mostly come to terms with not owning a fancy silicone tail as they just aren't very practical for dry use.

Thank you!! Yeah definitely go to physio, but in the mean time there is a gazillion things you can do in your tail without swimming. I can tell you really miss the water, so in addition to physio I highly recommend mermaid meditation. There are great CDs and MP3s you can buy of wave sounds, try listening to one of those while wearing your tail and close your eyes. It's not the same as actually swimming I know, but give it a try and you might find it rewarding, at least for the mean time. You can also just sit in a pool or tub in your tail and feel the water of course.

My boyfriend was born with a clubbed foot and he had surgery to fix it when he was little but his foot and most of his leg will never have the full strength that it should. When his ankle starts hurting he has a Velcro brace that he will put on that wraps around his heel and ankle. It definitely helps. Perhaps if you did try swimming again you could wear a Velcro brace to help support your ankle and take some of that stress off of it.

Ease back into it. If you have a monofin you can hold onto the railing of some pool steps or the edge and move the fin some. Then the next time you go to the pool you would move your monofin a little more. Eventually you could try a short swim, but I wouldn't try going fast.

I would also definitely talk to your physical therapist and explain to them how the monofin/tail works and see what their thoughts are if you are ready or when you might be ready to swim again. They might see it as a way for you to do physical therapy homework in a way you would really enjoy so they could see the benefit from it. You never know.

No, not really unless you count the time I pulled a muscle on my left bum cheek all the way along my back. This happened during one of my first swims in my merfin. It is one of the reasons why I only swim in smaller monofins now. It starts to hurt when I stay more than 2 hrs in the pool. But can't be helped cos sometimes its so hot, I rather live there for the afternoon!

Personally just from being an athlete, you should as with every injury, do some of the physical therapy, only to strengthen what was torn and give time for what is broken to mend before getting back into the tail. Reason being is even in doing dry events, something can happen with you in your tail and at least if it is strengthened, you probably won't completely destroy what ever was healing and start back at square one, which can happen if getting back into things too soon. I hope you recover quick, but waiting and making sure your ankle is strong enough will be better than damaging it even further!
