Is Mertailor my ONLY option for a cheap tail? and OTHER questions please help

Hey! I've been researching tails for months. I really want a finfolk tail but it's completely out of my price range. I thought about doing a gofundme BUT

Mertailor has 15% partial silicone tails today and tomorrow only - so should I just finally buy one? I have the tape measure sitting on my bed but then I keep trying to research more lol

I AM SCARED. I've read some bad reviews - but I also know someone who has a great one.

Should I buy one before the sale is over? I NEED a tail.

Or can someone post me links to tails of similar price?

What about his bad reviews? Has he gotten better now? I feel like I trust him - but I dont know?? I have the worst luck with things.

Also - are the tails so hard to get on and off that I will panic or feel trapped?

Right now I just have a Mahina merfin - I love how free it feels, but it cuts and sometimes bruises my feet -

Will a tail be heavy and confining or magic? Are there any tips I should use when measuring or ordering from mer tailor?

Or links to other cheaper tales? Help me, I am trigger happy for online sales haha

If you look around the site there are answers to your questions, most importantly being that starting with a partial silicone can be daunting, fabric tails are better to start with to get used to your legs being together, plus it's not that heavy on the bank account. Personally after reading everything here I wouldn't go with Mertailor, Tiggs tails have partial silicone for around $1000 if you must, plus her tails are consistant.

Since this is your first post, I suggest introducing yourself and having a look around the forum, there are heaps of threads to browse

No! Don't do it! You said it yourself that you REALLY want a Finfolk. Many mers will tell you that it is worth saving for what you truly want rather than just go for something else because it is cheaper. I am not a Mertailor customer, but I have been feeling really sad for the people who show up brand new saying they are going to get a Mertailor and they are so excited and then once it comes in they are heartbroken because it has issues. His tails are a gamble. You can't be sure if you will get a good product or a bad one. If you spend the money you have now on a Mertailor and it ends up bad, you will have lost all that money that could have gone to your dream Finfolk tail. It is much better to keep saving.

I also agree that you need to spend some time researching before you make such a commitment. It is best to start with a fabric tail. You could also make a sequin neoprene tail like the beautiful ones Hannah Fraser makes! So take some time to explore this site and learn more about silicone tails before getting one. Save your money for the design and tailmaker you really want. Gain strength and experience from a fabric or neoprene tail.

Also, definitely look into getting neoprene booties or even wearing big socks with your monofin to hopefully prevent your feet from getting hurt.

You should definitely start with a fabric tail. Rushing to buy a partial silicone just because it's on sale from a tailmaker with a dodgy reputation is just asking for trouble. There's a thread on why you should not get a silicone tail as a first tail. Your questions raise red flags...you should start slowly and make sure mermaiding is for you! Save to get your dream tail, No point in spending all that money on a tail that's less than wonderful.

Alright, now normally I'm known to spread my "good mertailor experience" to people considering one of his tails. I have a partial silicone, and I love it dearly, BUT it is 40 pounds. The seams are very obvious and they leave very heavy markings on my legs. The seams haven't been a big deal until recently when it has been painful to be in my tail for too long. The paint on my tail has faded, but it still does look amazing. I'm sure he can do something with the seams if you bug him about it. These are just things to consider. Also, his customer service is terrible, you're going to have to bug him to get a response. Both of my tails have been fairly good quality, but they don't last long. My current one is probably going to be retired soon, and I've had it since around February. Partials are not hard to get on and off, in fact they're really easy to put on. Unless the tail is wet, then you're not going to have a fun time. If you really want a finfolk tail, I'd suggest saving up for one, but this is all up to you.

Definitely consider fabric first. Even after practicing in fabric tails a bunch, the first time I swam in my silicone tail was a big awakening. I have a Finis Foil that I lap swim with, and my silicone tail also has a Finis Foil and still, it was very very different. I was thankful that I had the confidence and experience of fabric under my belt when I first swam in silicone.

I do know their starting price is 2700$ for a basic tail with no upgrade.

Nobody "NEEDS" a mermaid tail. Not enough to rush into impulse-buying something you're not sure about.

MerTailor is a HUGE gamble— especially lately, he seems to be getting worse IMO. Way too huge a gamble to blow over a grand on, because if something goes wrong you're basically on your own and you won't see that money again.

If you're considering throwing a grand at a sketchy tailmaker like Eric just because it's on sale, and you're hesitating, here's some advice: Don't. If you're not totally convinced, hold off. Something better may come along.

Especially for your first tail, your best bet is to go with a fabric tail and put the rest towards your dream tail from FinFolk. I can almost guarantee you'll have buyer's remorse if you order from MerTailor now.

Finfolk does make beautiful tails. One of my best friends and mersisters has one and my word, it is phenomenal! I would definitely avoid mertailor if you can. It doesn't seem to be a good thing to invest in, especially when you can start cheaper and get a better tail while still saving up for a Finkfolk. If you want, I sell custom made spandex tails that are perfect for starting out in. :) I have photos up on my Etsy page and Instagram if you'd like to check them out. I'm a new seller so I would be more than happy to give you a sale price. :)

I would recommend a fabric tail from fin fun or grow a tail.

I agree, fabric tails are a better 2nd step from a monofin. It will get you used to having your legs restricted and it helps you start adjusting to things like drag. And as far as Mertailor goes, while his pictures look pretty shiny and spiffy if you look around you will find he has done many in this community a great injustice and his professional personality or lack there-of is not something worth gambling that kind of money on. There are other options in a similar range or just a smidgen more with better quality, consistency, and customer support.

ITS STORY TIME! haha I was in the same boat you are in, I was (still am) new to the mercommunity, and the MerTailor was the first tailmaker I had seen prior; I was in love, and ready to spend $4000 on my dream tail from him. THEN came the reviews, I was just browsing the site getting to know it and the tailmaker section came and I clicked on Mertailor so I could see the awesomeness that he was making for other people. BUT it was the complete opposite, and after reading all the travesties with the tail and the communication that were happening, I started looking elsewhere and I am so happy I did! After searching on this site, I found an amazing tailmaker who's designs and artistry "spoke" to me more so than just "being the first tailmaker I saw!" And I bought my tail from Lily at Syren Studios and I am so glad I was fortunate enough to have this forum, because I might be in the same predicament as some of these other mers, which would be horrible (For Eric) but anyways, take your time and test the waters, you'll definitely be happy you did!

There are lots of tailmakers once you start looking and many are competitive to MT in price. You may not even like mermaiding! My best friend was sure she wanted me to make her a silicone tail, but she tried my fabric tail once and hated it. She has been a competitive swimmer for years but the tail made her panic.
Start small and be patient :)

MerrowFins is the way to go. Matts doing my tail now and sending me pictures everyday. It's beautiful and I love it. Don't order from Eric. I did that first and it was 3200 dollars of disappointment. Then Matt fixed it all up and sold it. And now I have a new one on the way.

Mernation. They are less expensive then most, consistent with their silicon, and very fast. They may not be the most exquisite flukes, (though their newest is rather lovely) but they are by far the most professional business. They have very good coummunication. (If you send them an FB message they get back generally within the day, most times within the hour).
