So I have never been that athletic and I'm a bit over weight. But I am a lifeguard and a swim instructor and I love the water. I have also been working on losing weight sinse the summer. But sometimes I get discouraged. Is this dream of becoming a mermaid impractical for me?

Darling, coming from another "heavy" mermaid, don't let something as small as weight keep you from being a mermaid.

That's extremely encouraging! Thank you!

What mermaid Lorelei said, don't let your weight and unfortunately most of society's take on people who carry extra weight keep you from doing something that you love. If you haven't already, look into the pods and see if there are mers local to your area to swim with.

Absolutely, what they said. I've never been skinny, I'd consider myself "voluptuous" :P and you know what? It's GREAT because I don't get cold in the water and I can swim for hours and hours even up here in the Pacific Northwest! :) Plus I still think I'm beautiful. You don't have to be thin to be beautiful. Never be afraid to do what makes you happy, because if someone wants to judge you for it, FUCK what they think!

Honey they're a plenty of mers who were in your position. And do you wanna know what we think? ANYONE can be a mer regardless or weight, ethnicity, age etc. don't let the public pool bitches get you down!

Two words, hun: SHELL NO!
Like everyone else has said; anyone of all skill levels, size, gender, ethnicity, etc., can become a mermaid. Hell, I still have trouble holding my breath underwater, I'm a fairly weak swimmer and being fully submerged underwater is still a bit of an anxiety trigger for me that causes me to panic sometimes. It doesn't stop me! My tail's worked wonders for helping me get over my fear and improve as a swimmer.
Every single mermaid and merman has their insecurities that can sometimes discourage them-- but just like with any dream, never let that stop you from doing what you love and want to do!
You can do it! :D

HELL NO! mermaids come in every shape and size. you say you're a swimmer, so there you go! even if you weren't, there are dry mermaids too. *grabs your face* everyone can be a mermaid. (helpful hint: fabric tails are pretty dang easy to take in if you lose weight. Anyone with a sewing machine could do it. [i made a tail that lasted me years after only taking home ec in middle school])

Another curvy mer here
My body might not be skinny, but it is healthy, powerful, graceful and over all amazing. I am beautiful, sexy, sensual and marvelous. My body has done incredible things and it would be doing my body a disservice to be ashamed of it's size, curves, lumps, bumps or stretch marks.
Health should be your focus, not some number on a scale or measuring tape.

I second what everyone else said, especially the part about reaching out to people in your area (if there are any) to hang out. You can swim on your own, but doing it with friends is especially awesome. Where do you live?

I live in Walla Walla, WA. I know there is none in my town and I haven't heard of anybody near by yet. I tell people here that I'm a mermaid and they look at me like I'm crazy! But I am extremely passionate about it and I want my passion to spread!

Walla Walla is kinda far from Seattle, but if you ever make it out this way, there are quite a few of us mers in the greater Seattle area who'd love to go for a swim! But in the meantime, get a monofin if you don't already have one, and find a place that will let you swim with it. Then go swim with it. Not only is it great for fun, fitness, and mermaid practice, you never know who'll come out of the woodwork when they see you with it. Many times people will approach you about it, either to ask you if you're a mermaid or to let you know they're into it too! Who knows what you could start! Especially if you're already a lifeguard and swim instructor, you probably have access to resources that would allow you to start a monofin swimming club or something!

I'm nowhere close to you,but I get where you are at,Ive had problems with my weight for as long as I could remember. But that doesn't stop me from becoming a mermaid, neither should it stop you.I know some Plus size mers, and they are some of the most amazing and beautiful mers I've met.dont let body size keep you away from your dreams.Being a mermaid isn't about having long hair,a thin waist, pale skin and huge boobs. Its about what makes you happy :) Being in a tail is something that will give you so much more confidence than anyone can dream of!in life there will always be people looking to tear you down about one little thing, and for us girls,it is far too common for that thing to be our body.Just Fin slap them out of the way and don't let them stop you from doing what you love. Now go get a fabric tail and show your stuff! (Or you can wait xD no need to spend money right now, just trying to prove a point

Awesome!! Would love to go swimming with some fellow mers! Yeah I have my own monofin and its just a basic one. And thankfully my job (which is the ww YMCA) is very supportive of my dream and lets me use it there. I plan on buying my tail sometime soon but finances are a little right with planning a wedding and all!
