Crazy tail idea? I really need some criticism.

Hello there :) I'm new to the MerNetwork, but I've been into mermaiding since I was 14. And now I'm 18 xD So four years...

I used to make fabric tails to swim in when I was younger and they normally were flops, but I enjoyed it! I would swim in them until they broke apart.

I moved the summer after I got into mermaids and I had no access to any pools. So I spent my mermaiding days surfing the internet and watching others. I had this plan that when I was older, I would make myself a real mermaid tail. A latex or a silicone tail. And I wanted to put all of my sweat and tears into it.

My friends used to compare to Aquamarine since I was tall, blonde, loved mermaids, and was always painting my nails different colors. The only tail I've really wanted to make was something similar to Aquamarine's. OBVIOUSLY nothing close to what the actual tail looked like xD But more inspired by the tail. Here were my plans...

Aquamarine's tail is a sheer, see-through fluke. I know I can't get that effect, but I was going to keep it a very sheer sliver blue color toward the center.
I'm planning on doing this tail with latex and neoprene. I was going to follow the typical latex tail routine in making it. But I wanted to add something more to this tail..
I was thinking about cutting out small scales from a thin sheet of plastic. Something simple that's used on over head projectors or what not. And I wanted to attach these scales to the tail once I'm finished painting it. So I get an effect like...

I know I'm not going to get that exact effect, but I'd love to get something half as nice as that. And I was going to touch up the scales with some sheer small grained glitter. I'm not sure if I want to add a small dorsal fin like Aquamarine has in the movie. I've never really been a huge fan of of it, but what do you think?

I'm a pretty artsy person, I'm taking AP college art right now in school. So I'm not craft challenged. And I've spent the last three years really researching the nitty gritty ways of making a good mermaid tail. I've looked up just about everything and watched almost every mermaid video on youtube. And I've thought about this tail for three good years.

Do you think this will sink or sail? What advice could you give me? Do you think it'll look nice? Dx I just need to talk to someone about this idea since no one in my real life understands my passion for mermaids <3

I was planning on doing both. I was going to layer the plastic scales on the latex pattern for a more 3-D scale effect. And I was planning on using a strong durable clear glue to coat one side of the scale with and stick it on. Does latex hold up good with glue?

iblondie, I'm not sure if anyone here has tried bonding transparency sheets to latex. I agree with ShyMer that it would be a good idea to make test swatches to figure out what bonds them best, and to test if the whole thing is waterproof.

The tails for Aquamarine were made by JMB FX Studio. They also created the tails for H2O and Fish Tail.

I haven't gotten any further then the drawing board yet haha! Test swatches are a great idea! I will try that out before doing anything for sure.

I was going to look around for a large hole puncher and maybe punch a lot of holes in a flimsy sheet of fabric. Then I was going to collect the holes that it leaves and cut them in half for the scale look. It will be labor intensive, but I figured if it gives it a more realistic look, it's worth it.

In thinking about cutting the plastic circles in half, you may want to think about how much overlap you want. If you cut a circle in half you'll end up with a much tighter pattern with a lot more gluing. If you use whole discs for each one, you'll probably have an easier time hiding where they're attached. Maybe if you found a long enough oval shaped hole punch?

As a thought- you can get transparent disc sequins that you sew on to your surface. You might be able to play around with colors some too- like pick up a bunch of clear and some transparent blues and greens for some variety. If you're using neoprene I assume it'd hold up better than if you were using spandex.

You can order big bags of them online or they sell a limited selection of colors at craft stores.

I'm not really fond of sewing sequins on >< I'm not the greatest seamstress so I want to do the bare minimum in sewing on this tail. Do you think gluing the sequins on will be okay if I use the right glue?

you can coat the neoprene in latex and coat the plastic pieces in latex then your glue can be latex lol :) x

I know this might not be the answer you are looking for but I did find this today, it make me think that using it would be a super easy way to attach sequins to a tail, you would have to line the tail with another piece of fabric though, the little plastic T's would probably be super annoying to rub against. I've never heard of liquid nail glue. Is it for nails like, on your fingers? Or nails to build a house with?

Haha yea, it's liquid nails - it's in the caulk section of homedepot lowes and even walmart.
They have a weatherproof one, which is the one you're going to want xD

I think the Aquamarine tail used the same plastic as in a plastic coke bottle.

you could try Plexiglass, they sell it in transeparent colors and its heat reactive so you can cut it and then heat it with a hot air gun to make the scales bend to make the shape.
Its sold at Homedepot and allot of online stores as well, check it out. Lots of cosplayers use it to make armor and weapons.
Celophane sheets are also transeparent but its very flimsy you might need to sandwitch a few together with glue.

Super Glue..... its water poof and nothing dissolves that (unless your going to be swimming around in metholated spirits or kerosene lol) i used it a lot as a kid and know its strength because i ALWAYS ended up glueing my fingers together (its a talent of mine lol) and would have to sit with a bowl of metholated spirits for hour to soak before my fingers could be pried painfully apart....i would suggest super glue :)

Secondly, another thing to think about with glue is going to be how it will affect the stretch of the neoprene and whether or not it will make the fabric really stiff.

I have no idea how to do the transparent like fluke in the movie. And I'm guessing it'll be a lot of work to figure it out and then make it work successfully. So I don't think so hehe

My dad has used Super glue my whole life for numerous things.... night vision optical repair, underwater camera repairs, repairs on my porcelain dolls, i have never once seen it crack so i take it that is no :)

Are you still going to try this? Because I was reading through old threads, a la slow afternoon, and there's a girl who coated sequins in silicone and got a really cool effect. Maybe you could just stick the transparencies straight to the caulk, or caulk over them.

There's more of them on ebay. Some have a shimmer to them and look blue/pink/purple in a certain light. What material is the Mermaid Parties tail? Latex? Maybe you could put a patch of scales on it (not glued on) and see how it would look? And if you like the look, glue the sequins down with latex :3 Its a start. xD
