Who are you?
Have those shells been lacquered? Or have some kind of protection against water damage? Cos they are going to rot, if it hasn't been treated.

How did you make the scales? Is it fabric pieces that's been glued on with silicone? Or fabric pieces that's layered on with silicone?
More info about what materials you use would be nice. Then we'd know if the materials you used is safe for us. Some of us have allergies to certain materials, it would be great to know if we'll have problems or not with your tails.

Also, have you ever swam in a tail?

i didn't know shells rotted, thanks for letting me know. the shells are covered in silicone, maybe that could help prevent rotting?
the scales are fabric glued on with silicone, the a thin layer of silicone on top.

Shells don't rot in water. That would kind of suck for any of the organisms that actually live in them. You might be thinking of dried starfish, which do rot in water because they are an entire dried animal, including the soft tissues. Soft tissues will become rehydrated and will rot if not lacquered, yes. But not shells. Shells are made of calcium carbonate (calcite or aragonite), a hard substance secreted by certain organisms for protection. Coral skeletons are also composed of this same substance. Calcium carbonate can be broken down into small pieces by mechanical processes...this is why many beaches around the world are composed of coral sand. And why you can find whole and broken shells scattered on every beach ever.

So don't worry about your shells.

I thought chlorine eats everything, that's why I said it'd rot.

Wouldn't the calcium go soft then? Especially if you swim with it every time? And the amount of soaking and washing in wetsuit wash or whatever detergent you use to wash your swimwear.

No.
Chlorine does not "eat" everything, though over time it can degrade softer materials like fabrics. I have immersed shells in a very concentrated chlorine bleach solution for an hour or two to remove thick algae growth. The shell remains intact. Chlorine bleach is regularly used as a disinfectant in aquariums to prevent the spread of pathogens. Shells are commonly used as aquarium decorations.

Calcium carbonate is a mineral, not an organic tissue, so it does not rot like tissue does. If you look up the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, you can see the relative hardness and durability (resistance to mechanical damage) of different minerals and metals. Diamond is the hardest at 10, while liquids rate at 0. Calcite (calcium carbonate) is a 3, so not one of the hardest minerals but sti far harder than soft organic tissues such as flesh (which are mostly composed of water anyway, so technically they'd be a zero on the hardness scale). Metals that also rate a 3 hardness include copper, bronze, and brass. Calcium carbonate CAN be dissolved in an acidic solution. In reef aquariums (those which contain corals and other reef-building organisms, aka calcifiers) you have to add a continuous supply of bioavailable calcium for the corals to take up and use for secreting their calcite/aragonite skeletons. One way of doing this is to use a kalkwasser reactor, which is essentially just a column filled with crushed aragonite through which carbon dioxide is bubbled. This forms carbonic acid and lowers the pH of the water enough to gradually dissolve the calcium carbonate (generally over a period of weeks or months) which then flows into the aquarium. I don't remember the specific pH off the top of my head (have to look it up later, I'm on my phone) but it would definitely be more acidic than anything shells or sand or swimmers would normally be exposed to.

Edit: I realize that using the terms calcium carbonate/calcite/aragonite interchangeably might be confusing if you haven't studied this sort of thing (?.. I wrote a lit review about ocean acidification and marine calcifying organisms in grad school so sometimes I forget not everyone knows all this) Calcium carbonate = CaCO3. Calcite and aragonite are both composed of CaCO3 but their crystalline structures differ. So same chemical properties, slightly different physical properties. Aragonite is harder but calcite is more stable. And they're not the same as pure elemental calcium. Hope that makes sense. (Fun fact: chalk and limestone are also both made of calcium carbonate. But chalk isn't formed by crystallization. It's actually a sedimentary rock formed from the calcite shells of coccolithophores, which were tiny tiny microscopic planktonic organisms; as they died, layers of their shells built up on the seabed and were gradually compressed into chalk. Ok I'll stop now)

No prob! One more thing, since I figure this might be useful info for peoplr who swim in pools a lot. I just looked up the pH of chlorinated pool water and the target pH is 7.4, with the acceptable range being 7.2-7.6. Seawater has an average pH of about 8.4. Calcium carbonate is soluble in weak acids but insoluble in neutral or basic conditions. Its solubility is a function of pH, meaning that as soon as the pH dips below neutral then calcium carbonate will become soluble, but more dissolution will occur the more acidic the solution. Also, because chlorine is a highly toxic element, it is only needed and used in extremely low doses for swimming pool disinfection. Though obviously still very noticeable, it is well below the level that would cause pool water to be acidic.

Also if anyone is curious, sodium thiosulfate neutralizes chlorine. It's the active ingredient in swimmer's shampoos and tap water dechlorinators for aquariums. So I guess if you're concerned about repeated prolonged chlorine exposure on fabric tails or swimsuits, rinse them out with that. I know you can buy sodium thiosulfate in its pure crystalline form (used it in aquariums to neutralize bleach after disinfecting) but I don't know where you'd order it from. We always got it in huge bags that one person would never be able to use up in a lifetime.
