Do you have a mermaid-specific bucket list? Mine was just 'get a tail' until I did, but now I'm having all sorts of dreams. So I thought it'd be fun to make a thread where we share our greatest mer-wishes!

I'll start off: my first, far more practical dream is to swim as mermaid with the spinner dolphins in Kona. They were so lively when I went there last year and I'm super-curious to see how they react to the tail (the stingrays here love it, maybe dolphins do too). Either this or mermaid with the sharks at Tiger Beach, but they definitely wouldn't be as energetic xP

And my less practical though hopefully someday achievable dream is to do the polar plunge as a mermaid. For those who don't know, the polar plunge is when you're at the packice (or at Antarctica) and just jump in the water without a wetsuit or drysuit. I think people use it to refer to beyond the packice as well, so long as it remains in the Arctic Circle, but I stick to my previous definition. I had the chance to do it (sans tail) earlier this year, but our trip leader's bad communication (and general assholeness) screwed it up for the rest of us. Obviously I couldn't stay in the water long without training, but it would be so awesome ... And because my bragging rights of doing that as a minor were taken away, doing it as a mermaid seems pretty darn cool. Pun intended.

That's me, so what are your mermaid goals? I'm curious to hear everyone else!

Jumping into ice water!!??? Whaaaaa!!??
sounds fun either way. And swimming with dolphins sounds like something to try atleast once in your life!

as for my merman goals:
first, I want to get in shape. I'm striving to get a better body so I can really show off as a merman. Right now, I don't wear my tail too often because I don't do it justice. But I'll get their!!

My ultimate goal is to eventually own my own indoor pool. I'm a little self conscious about going in public with a tail m, unless I'm with a group. So owning my own indoor pool would be a great achievement because I'd be able to swim when ever I want and not have to worry about others. Also, host little mer parties every now and then.

Lol, it's a tradition for some of the Arctic charter boats to do the plunge. But eh, sounds like fun, right?

Your goals are great! I really hope you become more comfortable in your skin; a tail's a tail, and if you feel like a mer, you'll do it justice whether you fit the old stereotype or not ;)
I love the idea of owning your own pool! You will post party invitations on the forum, won't you?

I think the closest I'd get to ice water is a quick dip in a cold bath tub. But going to watch and supporting others would be fun to.
And I guess even just slimming down a bit would work for me to!
And of course I'd post invites on here. Not sure how many people outside of California would be willing to show up, but hey, cali has lots of places people can visit after or before the party. We'll see :thumbs up:

Ahhh! Stop talking about ice water! XD You all are making my teeth chatter! Hahahaha! That does sound interesting though, I actually know a few people in my area who do a Polar Plunge sort of thing, but I think I'll leave that for them to do... personally... Brrrr! :sweat drop:

With that said, I don't really have much on my list yet... Mainly, I'd just like to get a silicone tail, and find a mer-wrangler that I'd be comfortable enough to have carry me. I would also LOOOOOOOOOOOVE to go to some local events, and see how the children react to seeing a real, live mermaid. I know I would have simply adored the idea, as a kid! And lastly, I want to meet and swim with some of you other lovely Mers! Ugh! That one's probably top on the list!!!! :jawdrop:

Of course, I'm sure I could think of other things I'd like to do as well, but they are all overshadowed by the rest, at the moment.

Ricky: Maybe just come along to push me in when I wimp out xP
I know quite a few people in San Diego who have been begging for me to come over, so I've been looking for another excuse to visit! But you're right, we'll see how it goes. It's definitely not a bad destination!

Mallet Island Mermaid: Lol! Think warm, tropical thoughts, everything will be all right :p
Ugh, that sounds painfully relatable! Have you swum in a fabric tail yet? I find that (young) kids will even believe in us fabric-tailed mers, which really is a lot of fun (but slightly awkward when you can't even speak around children, cough). Of course silicone would be great — I'm pretty sure you'd even get adults believing you were real?
Where are you from, if you don't mind my asking? I travel a lot, and since I'm also super excited about meeting other mers I'd definitely post about where I'm going ahead of time if I know of anyone in the area. It'd be so cool to swim with other people! (I need to rearrange my bucket list, lol)

Mine are to swim in Hawaii, Mexico, Bahamas, etc. To finish my tail. Feel comfortable in the ocean. To start my mermaid kids party business and become a full time mermaid

Ahahahaha! Well, I don't mind the cold, as I hail from Michigan, and often swim in the lake. :p But still, it's cold right now... so warm tropical thoughts indeed! XD
It's a pain, isn't it? Ugh... But why yes, I have! I actually own a FinFun tail, and I looooooove it too much sometimes! Hahaha
That is true, some children may believe! I just don't want to be confrunted with the..."why are your scales so smooth?" question! Hahaha. Oh! I'm sure some adults would, seeing as though some ask me if my elf ears are real! XD

Ah! But I am from Michigan, though I cannot give out the specifics, at the moment... I'm kinda hiding from some internet stalkers here, and they scare me.. O.o Perhaps we'll meet a convention someday though? That'd be sweet!

My goals are to get in better shape, work on my swimming and maybe one day swim in an aquarium.

My first goal is to get me 'starter set' I have them all in my Amazon shopping cart and I will be getting them after Christmas. But it consists of a pair of brown goggles, a Finis Rapid Monofin, water socks and plastic finger webbing. After that, I will be going to my local city pool for a few weeks, hoping to go at least once a week. If I can get there once a week, I am going to try to up it to two or three times a week and then I will get a monthly pass once it becomes cheaper to do so.

After that, I will be saving up to buy a second fin that I can cut down to match my fluke shape and I will be saving up for Stretch Velvet to make my first tail.

Ricky: I hope so too. Anyone who wants to own a pool to host mer parties must be awesome!

Mallet Island Mermaid: FinFun tails are gorgeous, I love their patterns. I actually ordered one of their monofins because my MagicTail one broke, so I hope they swim well!
Hold up though, elf ears? That's so cool! Are they prostethics or permanent?
No no, definitely no specific locations! It's not really a place I come by a lot, but as you said, perhaps we'll meet at a convention :3 I'm hoping to attend one in 2017 (2016's quite full for me already). And hey, if you happen to swing by the Cayman Islands in the meantime, shoot me a PM xP

Kelly: There should be a thread dedicated entirely to our dream mermaiding locations, lol. What kind of tail are you making?

Illyn: Those are the hard ones to commit to xP I've been trying to work on my core muscle but I forget half the time. Good luck with that!

I've heard good and neutral things about them. Some mers say they don't do anything and others have said they are nice for pictures and some have said they help with swimming. But they are only a few buck so I figured what the heck, might as well throw them in my cart. And the only reason I have such a solid plan is because I've been thinking about this for like 4 months now, ever since I found this forum. I haven't even been int he water since discovering mermaiding was a thing and I am just dieing to swim. So I plan instead!

Kelly: Thanks! More tailmaking threads to stalk ^.^ I love the colors you're going for with your sequin tail!

The MerFanc: Thanks for the link, I might just get those too. And I get what you mean — since deciding I wanted to upgrade to a silicone tail I've created a step-by-step plan to keep myself occupied (and prepared!) until I actually have the tail. It's great swimming with your tail, especially for the first time, but the excitement of planning it is loads of fun! Does your planning come with excessive amounts of daydreaming too? 'Cause mine does xD

Haha, of course it does! I'm already imagining all the weird looks and the kids trying to touch it. I'm also a Furry so I understand the gawking and just roll with it!

I've reached most of my mer goals that I can realistically attain.

Still on my list is moving to a secluded spot with enough room to build a swimpond in the garden.
Probably never gonna happen, but I'm saving and looking into opportunities all the same :)

I've already gotten a tail, now my ULTIMATE goal is to freedive with it, and travel around the world swimming in my tail in pretty waters. Then again, there's still the struggle of transportation to consider, but it doesn't hurt to dream, lol. I might even start freediving courses soon.

I've also dreamt of doing a very unique mer-series with my gay mersquad (lmao you know who you are), and getting awesome footage and stuff.

TheMerFanc: That's cool! I actually love the gawking myself, I think that's part of the reason why I first tried mermaiding xD

Echidna: That's great to hear! I love that you're still looking into your dream even it's not the most likely of things. It's the only way tou could ever make it happen, right? :D

Introverting: LOVE your goal! I guess you've got a pretty big monofin, if transportation is the issue? Still, it'll be worth it! Freediving is so much fun.
Lol, that sounds like so much fun! I'll be jealous when you post that footage <3

Thank you! I love mine soooo much! I originally wanted a red one, but they were out of that one in my size at the moment, and I couldn't wait any longer to buy one... so I went with purple! XD I've never owned a MagicTail before, but I love my FinFun, so I hope you'll be pleased with yours too!
Oh! Hahahaha! They are prosthetics, though permanents certainly would be neat!
:) It is a bit out of they way for some, but the area is beautiful! A little cold... but beautiful nonetheless! Hmm... maybe I'll see you in 2017 then? That would be a lot of fun! I'm not sure I'll be out by the Caymans anytime soon either, but if I am, I will for sure bring my tail and send you a PM!! :D

I have soo many...

- Swim MORE often.
- Try and swim at as many springs as I can.
- Holding my breath for longer.
- Learn how to blow bubble rings.
- Make a sequin tail.
- Make a silicone tail or just buy one from Merbellas.
- Convince a friend to become a mermaid/merman and swim with me.
- Convince my boyfriend to become a merman.
- Get at least a disposable underwater camera for underwater photos.
- Swim with the wild dolphins in the local bay. I always see them way out there and I have tried kayaking out to them. I figure I can get my tail on, kayak out there to them, and jump in the water and swim with them.
- Go to a Florida pod meetup.
- Go to one of the big mer conventions.
- Get the remaining materials I need to finish my second mermaid bra.
- Do a swim test with my first mermaid bra. (I have been too worried that something will go wrong when I swim with it, like if it will fall off.)
- Maybe swim with a shark.
- Learn to jump out of the water in a tail. I don't know if it is possible, but I have seen a video of it done in a monofin. I sooo want to...
- Have a professional mermaid photoshoot underwater.

Soo many things to strive for...

Mallet Island Mermaid: Purple is an awesome color! Lol, we're just too eager sometimes xP I just got my FinFun monofin in and it fits my MagicTail perfectly, so I'll take it for a test swim next week and let you know how I like it!
I actually prefer cold weather for vacations over anything else, so that's just all the more reason to go. But yeah, if you ever need a tropical holiday with great mermaiding opportunities, there's this little island!

Fun123joker: That's such a fun idea for a tail! You could really get creative with that fluke, incorporating Magikarp's little whiskers and such. And you could change into a Gyrados tail and tell people you evolved :P

Jaffa: Good luck with that! Swimming distances with a monofin is so different than with separate fins.

Illyn: Yeah, I can imagine that winter swimming isn't easy. Here the ocean's too wild to swim in at the moment, so I'm just doing crunches every day to keep some of that core muscle. Hope you find a good pool to work with!

Alea: That's one heck of a list, wow! The jumping out of the water thing sounds fascinating — I don't see how it could feasibly be done, but if it can, go for it! If you're going to swim with sharks, though, definitely do it without your tail first to get used to them, and with your tail only if you have safety divers with you. They're very sensitive to how we act and need tender love and care ^.^ It's so worth it though!

Have you seen this video PetLoverSpy? - https://youtu.be/z09RmuaPyVU
There are other videos of people jumping out of the water while wearing a monofin, but I like that video the most.

If I swam with sharks I would definitely do it taking all the precautions. I mainly want to swim with at least one shark just to see one face to face to hopefully make me feel better about them being out there. I know they aren't really man eaters but when I am out there swimming in the bay, which has dark, brackish water, in the back of my mind I am always thinking that there could be a shark and I wouldn't even be able to see it because the water is always dark. Like the time I was on a paddleboard and a manta ray rose up from the bottom and all I saw was his fin and I got scared thinking a shark was swimming up.

That is so cool! I can't imagine the amount of power that takes — looks like an intense thing to train for!

Ah I see. It's definitely healthy to feel that kind of caution; we get people here who go swimming in the ocean at night without a care in the world, even with warnings of it being prime hunting time for sharks and that the animals wouldn't be able to see well.
Which sharks do you get in your area? I've swam with Oceanic white tips, reefies, lemons and tigers and find that they all behave very differently, both based on species and location. Do you have any (planned) local shark swimming/diving opportunities?

That goal is full of win.

My goal once I get my first tail (which I hope to have saved up for within the next two months or so) is to eventually design and create my dream tail in silicone. So far the inspiration for my dream tail hasn't struck so I'll just crank out designs until one finally speaks to me. If making it in silicone doesn't work out for me I'll probably commission FinFolk to make it for me.

Thanks! I know I'll have the money saved up in 3 months max. The only reason it's going to take that long is because of how my husband and I put money aside of pay to spend on stuff that doesn't go to food or bills. We essentially take turns spending X amount of money and for my next few turns I'm saving up for my tail. I know that probably sounds like a weird way of doing things but this system works for us.

My wife swam in a full mermaid suit with the spinner dolphins in Kona. Unfortunately, they didn't seem to care any more than with any other free diver. (They don't like scuba divers, though, because exhalation of bubbles is considered an aggressive act by dolphins)

I live near the Gulf of Mexico so we have all kinds of sharks. Bull sharks, hammerheads, Tiger sharks, Mako, Blacktip, Oceanic White tip, Thresher, etc and great whites visit too. People probably like to say that we don't get sharks in the bay but I figure the bull sharks come into the bay. The dolphins and rays sure do. I don't really have a shark swim/dive planned. Of all the things on my list it isn't really first priority but if I get the opportunity I would like to go for it but probably if I could get someone I know to come do it with me just because I wouldn't be comfortable going with a bunch of strangers. Finding someone I know to go swim with sharks would probably be very, very difficult. Especially since the sharks in our area in the past few years have gotten bigger... In 2014 an 11 ft. 850 pound mako shark was caught, tagged, and released by someone shore fishing. :shark:

Just like any (not rich at all) mermaid I want a pool indoor AND outdoors (because...money). My first goal right now is to be better at swimming. I'm an average swimmer, and can hold my breath pretty long but I still want to be able to swim longer and deeper. I can't get a silicone tail right now so I guess my second goal would be to save enough money to get a tail.

3.Continue with my fitness goals
4.Swim MORE(both in summer and winter months)
5.Save up the money to buy a silicone tail
6.Make/buy a bra top
7.Work/Volunteer as a mermaid for my local Renaissance Faire
8.Eventually learn everything I need to start a mermaid party business and then start(This is a long term goal)

(First time checking this website since 2016 started — I was enjoying offline bliss but too tempted by all the MerMania recaps :p)

Sasha: your list is so organized! It's great to have a step-by-step plan so you can work one thing at a time. I'd love to see pictures when you attain the later few goals. This thread should definitely include completed goals as well.

Goals? Lets see:
Get at least two nice tails. One that is light and compact, for taking on cruise vacations. The other would be neoprene, or maybe eventually silicone, for swimming near home, and in the (cold) ocean.
Of course, actually get out and swim in them.
Improve breath holding. I would like to get to one minute while swimming, so when snorkeling (on vacation) I can swim down to something interesting, get some pictures, and be comfortable doing it.
Actually meet other mers! I've been in a vacuum since starting this hobby. Maybe have other mers over to my pool.
Finally, and always, have fun.

Well thank you lol :) I've definitely been working on the fitness goal. I've been doing workouts and dance since around this time last year. Just added yoga to my daily fitness routine so I'll be getting more limber as well. But yeah I definitely want to start working on the breath holding xD I also agree with the idea of including the completed goals :)

My current Merman goals are:

-Get in better shape (because I am very scrawny with no muscle :sweat drop: Not very Merman-like)
-Get a tail (because, unfortunately, I am currently tail-less)
-Improve breath-hold (I am currently only at 45sec-1min underwater and I want to expand to at least 1 and a half or 2)

However, My Future/Over-all Merman bucketlist is longer and includes:

-Swimming (with tail) in all five oceans
-Getting a silicone tail
-Making my own silicone tail (might be the same or a different tail than the one above)
-Swimming on the Great Barrier Reef with a tail
-Swim with whales
-Get an extended mer-tail (this one will be harder to pull off)
-Swim in Jellyfish Lake (where the jellyfish cant sting you)
-Move somewhere closer to a beach where I can go swimming

I'm just new to the whole world of Mermaid swimming but my goals so far are to swim more regularly (I haven't been swimming in years so hoping that Mer swimming will be a good way to get me back into it), to meet and go swimming with other mers in my area, to visit some of the Mermaid schools across the world, especially the Philipennes one (because it was the first Mermaid school I ever heard about and it made me want to go there!), visit some of the beautiful reefs around the world, and lastly to meet and ideally swim with either Cariba or Phoebe from H2o!

Ever since I discovered mermaiding I've wanted to go to Weeki Wachee and see them perform and even attend their Sirens of the Deep mermaid camp. It looks like it would be fun. Hope to attend MerMainia next year!!

Storm: The one tail for travel and one for home is a great idea. And I think there are quite a few mers in Cali — maybe ask around, see if anyone's close to you for a group swim?

RisingMermaid: Your bucketlist is so cool! Swimming in all five oceans sounds like an amazing thing to achieve. I might have to add that to mine ;)

SeaGlass Siren: Show us pics when you move in ;)

Calizaire: It'd be awesome if there were to be a meetup nearby a reef like that, since we seem to long for both the tropics and each other's company! The logisticts might be a little tricky though, lol.

leomar: Oh, it would be so cool to meet the H2O cast! I wonder how they'd react to us off-TV merfolk?

I'm HOPING (fins crossed) that the H2o girls will be coming along to the first Aussie Merfest happening in November this year! Renee the organizer mentioned she's trying to get them to come. I wonder if they still regularly practice Mer swimming or if they got to keep their tails?

Continue swimming and exercising so I don't end up with early heart attacks like the rest of my family.

leomar: That would be awesome! Kudos to Renee. I can't imagine they got to keep the show tails, but who knows, maybe they have indeed gotten one of their own?

Jaffa: Oh man, that sucks :( I know how scary it can be to have a family history like that (breast cancer in mine). Still it's great that mermaiding doubles as both a hobby and a way to strengthen your body!

Updated and time sensitive goals!
-order my neoprene and upholstery thread, zipper, needles, and nylon webbing strap.
-make a new pattern for my tail
-cut out my neoprene tail pieces
-test my polycarbonate monofin
-sew the neoprene tail together
-sew on the sequins
-test tail in water
-go to the beach and do a photo shoot
-get business cards made
-get my business license
-do some free test parties
-launch my business
All of this hopefully before summer starts!

-Improve breath holding

-Learn proper swim *meaning no bend at the knee using hips and back to push me through the water * * the dolphin kick i think its called*

-Learn how to equalize ears the right way so I can go deeper * i have ear tubes*

-Lose weight of course

Further out,

- Do deep dive swims at least 20 feet if not 30

-Swim with dolphins or whales

-Swim with a whale shark

-get a pod going

Thanks for your concern!

At mid 40s, some of my family said its too late to start being healthy. But I feel great! I have not been sick in 2 years. Before, I used to get the cold first, and it'd last nearly a year off and on. Now I barely get a sniffle. My sis in law is always saying, "touch wood" but I don't believe in that superstitious crap. Even if I stave off the heart attack for a year or two, its better than having no exercise.

Kelly: Wow, that's a well-thought out plan! Looks like a lot of hard work. I hope you get it all done by the summer :)

Mine is to one day get a gray and silver silicone tail either partial or full, but Ive been eyeing that silicone and neoprin hybrid from the Mertailor :) I also want to make a black and red mermaid shell bikini top with a red gem in the middle. ( Fake of course, lol)

Mine is to swim (if I can) in every sea, lake, river, and little piece of water that I can find. I'm only barely getting started, and I'm amazed by just how much space there is to just explore, even around where I live let alone the rest of the country and the rest of the world. And to be the best freediver I can. I don't really know much about anything mermaidly yet unfortunately, but I'm starting to create a list so I don't forget anything. (I hope none of you mind me stealing your ideas!) :)

Edit: Can't believe I instantly forgot when I posted this. I want to learn to communicate with dolphins and make a wonderful dolphin friend.

The dolphin idea is defiantly possible. They are very intelligent creatures of the sea. However just be aware of the season your going in. *mating season* males can be extremely aggressive if feel threatening when trying to portect there mate, and *birthing season* Mothers are even worse when they have a new calf at there side. * But if you do end up making this dream come true i'd love to see a video or picture. Best of Luck !!

I've heard some stories about how violent they can get. I've got a ton to learn about them really, so that will be my first goal before I try to just jump in with them. In the meantime I'll settle for watching videos of them playing with bubble rings :)
I'd really like to see if I can end up working with someone who studies or looks after dolphins, that will be best I think.

Cheydub: They are! I actually know someone in Crystal Springs who swam with them, just a tail in the freezing water. She showed me pictures and it was the cutest thing!

Kalani: Freediving like that would be awesome — that'd really get one in the mer-mindset, wouldn't it? And it would definitely help to keep up with the whale sharks, they're ridiculously fast.

EdenBlue: I've snorkeled with them, does that count? :p Seriously though I'd love to mermaid with them, I feel like it would be such a special bond to experience.
