Hey there kelby here, really excited to larping for the first time! I'm actually gonna be a mermaid npc (waypoint larp for all you mitten state mers) during the summer season, I get to use a lake n everything [emoji7] [emoji5] [emoji1]

I larp too :D
I've been a mermaid twice when I was NPC in our group, once with a pirate special and once in an elven forest where I was a guardian of the lake there.
Now I'm a player where I'm an enhanced human with dog ears, tail and better sense of smell and better hearing.
I just hate playing human because I'm a human my whole life and in the game all the elves are hunted to near extinction, so the DM made a special character for me

You can larp as mermaids?? Are you actually in your tail, in the water when you do that?
I've never participated in larping — well, not unless semi-organized quests in a detailed fantasy universe between three kids count. It's definitely on my wishlist (along with tabletop D&D), but it's not something people do where I live. Not that I know of, anyway. Still, if I ever get the chance I'd sign up in a heartbeat!

I've played a faun too, with digitigrade legs, it got pretty heavy with all the running :P
Here I don't have my horns yet, but this is what I looked like:

PetLoverSpy: yes! I do get to swim around in my tail, and sing on rocks and tell riddles and stuff to the pc's. All I did was went to michigan larp player group and send a ad/ announcement that if they needed a mer for a npc I was around and a larp group's GM contacted me. So if your looking for larps to go to deary I suggest searching in fb "(your state) larp/ larp players" or go to larping.com and search your state for some. If you find some contact them and just ask if they would like a mer npc! If you need me to explain the difference between a pc and npc let me know or any info let me know!
Azurin Luna: the one I plan on going to have fauns I think but also faerie types but I would use it for maybe a nixie, I love your costume its sick! Like wow amazing! are those wrappings on the hoof part?

Kelby that sounds like so much fun! Unfortunately I don't live in the States — I live on a tiny island. I travel quite a bit though, so if they accept foreigners there's hope for me yet :P And an NPC in larping is a mostly static character who helps/hinders the PCs on their quest, right?

aaaarrr, I love LARP!
Being a mer npc, that is so awesome!
I'm sure any high fantasy group would appreciate that.
(Would get very cold in a non-tropical country after a while, though xD )
I've looked a bit around here, but there are mostly low-fantasy and realistic medieval groups.
Not to mention my preferred character (Echidna as a half-snake with a longbow) would be very awkward to play and get around outside of water lol.

Oh that sucks! I mean living on an usland must be nice though!
Most larps accept anyone so being out out of country doesn't really natter I think. And usually ur first larp with any group is free!

Haha of course I got into larping right before the off season! Went to NPC to see what it was all about and now I'm working on a character for when they start up again in Feb.
I was thinking of doing a water based cleric and I'm planning to make scaled armor hat's decorated with with sea shells. :) Would be fun to NPC as a mermaid once I get a tail.
Nice to meet another Michigander, by the way, Kelby!

GM right here!
Mermaids would be cool in a LARP but my LARPs only run once each time and only for one to three days....
The only LARP I have which is annual is Rise of Ragnarok but that's just a war game....

Mine are normally done at the farm I live on or a camping ground near by but Rise of Ragnarok is done in a different part of the country, in the town where most my LARPers live.

I am so sorry for not replying for such a long time, I've been traveling for the holidays and have had literally no downtime to check my feeds :: exhausted ::
That being said, thank you so much! We have a lot of fun with it and we'd love to have anyone that wants to come out and try it. We run a colonial fantasy game (also known as flintlock fantasy, think American revolutionary war/game of thrones/dragon age Mashup) and we run games in Tennessee. :)

I'm planning to go to my first LARP in about two years. It'll either be Dystopia Rising (essentially a zombie post apocalyptic LARP, I already have a character design and everything) or a Harry Potter-esque one in Poland. I'm never really done it, but I'd love to try it out.

We need to revive this thread, maybe with tips and tricks how to larp as a mermaid among other things!
Since it's different from country to country, we could describe the LARP scenes we know to help others decide if it's for them.
I have larped in Poland, Czechia, Romania and Germany so far.
If you're interested to know more about LARPs there, let me know.
Eastern European LARPs are usually quite scripted, but have an incredible authenticity and deep emotion.
Germans like more freeform "hack'nslash" combat things. And taverns, loads of taverns :p
Currently, the biggest con, Drachenfest, is going on there.
I considered attending, but it's basically just one huge battle (5000 participants), and I like to keep my costumes nice and clean
I made a "land costume" of my main tail, meaning a long snaketail with a little skirt beneath to hide my feet, then moving around with an undulating slither in a very realistic fashion. I really have to make a video of it, it's very unique when in motion!
However, this costume isn't suited for a player character (I won't use it on dirty ground), thus I'm considering making a mermaid "land walking costume" as well which is surprisingly difficult, especially since many people in LARP expect you to look like a Hollywood movie director splurged some millions on your outfit and performance...

Agreed I would love to hear more about LARPing. Every now and then I look into LARPing, but I'm not exactly sure what LARP would be right for me. I know I don't like the boffer kind where the weapons are just pieces of foam and people don't put much effort into dressing up, etc. I like the ones with the more realistic looking weapons where people also dress up and get into character. I like the looks of the fantasy LARPs and I love the idea of fighting (with fake weapons). Evidently we have a few guys here locally involved in legit fighting with dulled swords and heavy armor. I'm not that serious about fighting though, and read that one of the local fighters has broken someone's arm before when fighting them. I'm not out to break anything, but I do want to have a chance to be a little wild.
As far as getting to be a mermaid, I'm not sure how all LARPs go, but I have noticed from watching videos of some of the larger LARP gatherings that you have some 'down time' where people just wander around, sing songs, buy stuff, visit taverns, etc. During that time you could get into character as a mermaid. Maybe the lucky village mermaid or something.
Anyways, here is a video I like of a girl documenting her Voyage North - to Bicolline (Week long LARP event):

I'm a LARP Mermaid! Amtgard, specifically. Ours is a weekly foam-combat system, but has a big arting & roleplay community. I get to be a mermaid every single weekend if I want, be it an NPC, fighting monster (mermaids get their own special stats!), or just sitting around under the pavillion while I work on my garb (outfit and accessories).

After a long absence on the Mernetwork I return! And I resurrect this post with me!
I've been attending New World Magischola, NWM: Yule, and most recently Imperial Magischola, all of which are based around the idea of a wizard college in North America and the history, politics, and legends thereof. I've yet to larp as a mermaid or merman yet but Yule has frequently had the Ohio Mermaids as mermaid NPCs and the first yule event I went to I did turn into an octopus. I'm considering going as a merman drone this year. I have gone as a nagual (animal shapeshifter) cryptozoologist in House Croatan, a Lakay Laveau chaos theory elementalist artificier, a Maison DuBois first year Marshal student who is actually a 317 year old vampire undercover secret agent, and an Unsoiled Ptolemy Court cartomancer from New Orleans.
I've also been to a couple of vampire larps and a short larp called Be Not Afraid where I played Uriel, Angel of the Sun, Chief of the Virtues, Sage of Life.
