thinner for repairs

Hey all, I do a lot of my own repairs, I tint silicone, but I never thin it because I'm not sure what to thin it with. I've done a decent job with the silpoxy and pigments, but I always find that no matter how hard I try the consistency it always a little too thick for silpoxy and makes the repairs obvious unless I painstakingly take forever layering the pigments.

I'm just curious what people find it the best thing for thinning for spot jobs. I seem to be great with light colours and blending, but the thickness of the silpoxy is really apparent when I go to darker colours.

If I am not wrong too much pigment will affect the resistance of the repairs.

Not much, I knew that (or read it somewhere) so I use it sparingly and do things in layers.

I'll ask to Alexander then as he uses silicone for all the repairs but I'm sure he knows how to use also silpoxy as we talked about thinners and he named a product but I don't remember exactly its name now.

I think the most popular thinners are denatured alcohol, toluene, xylene, mineral spirits (white spirits), or acetone.

But in reading the SDS, Smooth On's thinner looks a lot less toxic than any of the thinners mentioned above.

Yes Alexander told me about toluene!
But you have to be very careful it's really toxic if you breathe it.
You must work in the open air :/

Is there really no SmoothOn distributor in the whole of Canada? We even have one here in Europe, and Canada is more or less their "backyard" (no offense intended). Direct import may be tough, but that's what distributors are for. ;)

I've tried those all guys, they either require super large min orders or they charge 3-4 times as much. It is the same issue I had trying to buy their pigments.

There's a naturally derived solvent I've seen called D-Limonene. I think it can be used with silicone.

I also dont think any of you can send it to me through customs, they're controlled substances. Which is why i have to get it from a 'dealer' and why they mark it up.

We have the same problem here. Naphtha and the other one they usually recommend aren't legal in California. I've also heard that mineral spirits (aka paint thinner) can actually ruin silicone (glad I'm not airbushing this tail)
Have you asked smoothon about an alternative that you might be able to buy locally?

Yes I have, and they redirect me to the same canadian dealers (it's too much hassle for them to fill out the paperwork for me to get through customs) and honestly if it wasnt too much more expensive I would. but I've contacted them all and they all mark up drastically or have it min order set.

I have used xylene with dragon skin and have had no problem with it. But make sure that you mix parts A + B very well together before you add thinner. :)

i've used mineral turps and find it hard on silicone, I have also found that the silicone takes longer to cure and it also has the smell once cured. Odourless is the way to go IMO. try and stick with thinner that are used for craft paints as its most likely not to be so hard on the silicone.
