Mermaiding myths and facts

When I was a new mermaid I had a lot of preconceptions about the mermaid community and over the years I've seen these same sort of ideas come up in intro threads and in discussions with other mers, so here's a list of myths and facts about Mermaiding! Feel free to add on!

Myth: Mermaids are all skinny blonde white athletic and tanned.
Fact: There are mermaids of every shape size and color. Everyone can be a mermaid OR A MERMAN.

Myth: Fabric tails aren't as legit as silicone tails.
Fact: every kind of tail has its perks and drawbacks and you do not have to strive for silicone.

Myth: Merpeople believe they're actually merpeople.
Fact: for some of us it's a hobby, for some it's a way to represent their inner self, for some it's just like cosplay. There's no wrong reason to mermaid.

Myth: Everyone is like 12 or younger.
Fact: mermaids come in all ages! I think most of our members are in their 30s.

Myth: Silicone tails are for rich people!
Fact: I'm almost done with my silicone tail and my bank card was declined this week....

And a few from my mom:

Myth: Everyone you meet on that website is a 40 year old pervert.
Fact: Never meet someone from the Internet one on one, but I have yet to run into a mer that was lying about their gender or age when I met them in person. There are sexual predators that lie on the Internet, so be careful, but I have met a ton of mernetwork members and they've all been ok so far.

Myth: Mermaiding is a fetish.
Fact: yeah for someone everything is a fetish. Mermaiding is not primarily a sexual thing. It's a fun thing.

Myth: All mermen are gay or predators.
Fact: straight not true. Some mermen are gay, some aren't, and we already covered the predator thing.

Myth: Mermaiding is a waste of money.
Fact: Doing something you enjoy is never a waste of money.

Fact: Mermaids are as different from each other as anyone might be. Some are friendly, some are not. Some sing with fish, some eat them, some sing to them and then eat them. All are individuals making their own choices.

This is true, but I think it could be extended to people thinking tail swimming is dangerous in general. Remember that blog post that got a lot of traction about how if you swim in a tail you'll drown?

Well, we have to stop pretending it isn't dangerous. That's a bit of a put your head in the sand approach. It does have a lot of unique risk, and potential for drowning is very real. The best way to counter that is being proactive about safety. But you can't act like it safe.

Hannah Fraser talked about swimming with the sharks and so much more goes into it than the community sees. And there is a valid concern that people see what she does and think sharks aren't dangerous. That has actually been a voiced criticism of Hannah's work by leading shark experts. ( recently published in an article)

Hannah was bitten by a shark on her fluke. She won't wear certain tails around sharks, and she goes through sets of special underwater contacts that cost 10k a pair each time she shoots. She has dozens of safety divers experienced with sharks but you don't see them in her pics and videos.

I really think the community as a whole have to embrace the concerns over safety and have suitable responses along with making safety changes to how we do things to help the entire standard.

It is shocking to me how many professional mers have no insurance. Swim alone. And take unnecessary risks. At the end if the day that puts us ALL at risk.

It is only going to take one kid drowning, one Mer getting seriously hurt or drowning, before our entire community is put under a microscope and things end up ruined for everyone.

I just wish people would stop being so dismissive. It only proves the point to those who criticise what we do.
