Hey Mers! I hope everyone is having a great holiday season and I would like to say thank you for visiting my post! :)
For a while now I've been wanting to start my tail that I designed with inspiration of Disney's Maleficent. I'm here today to ask the community for input on my exciting new creation. Here is the design http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/12/28/968cf21206b3c24e885ede12e82aee27.jpg
I want to make it with material thicker than Lycra but not silicone or latex.
My first action is to test monofins and decide what kind I should invest in.
All (positive/helpful) ideas and comments are greatly appreciated and welcomed. :)

Very cool. I've been making a Maleficent inspired scale Maille bra! I love your designs. My biggest difficulty has been when I tried to add green in with the purple and b lack of the bra, some said it was too "Mardi Gras " feeling. I don't get that with your tail though.

Make it out of neoprene!

I second PearlieMae's idea for neoprene! its very light and versatile, and can carry colour well. You could probably make your dorsal fin out of it too. Maybe if you're willing to change the shape of the fluke you could try a Mahina merfin? I know Mermaid Saoirse's beautiful Merrow tail was made out of painted neoprene and a Mahina merfin. Or you could try extending a Rapid/ Wave monofin to keep your original fluke shape. Either way, I really love your tail design, Pearl! all the best! :D

yep Neoprene is the best option, remember though neoprene will make you float. So it's best to test it first, if you can't stay down in the water a weight belt will help.

That's a beautiful tail design!! The colours are so stunning, I can't wait to see how it progresses!!
If you can't find a suitable monofin, you could probably make one out of lexan?

So pretty! I'm actually working on a maleficent tail right now as well, though my design is more heavily based on the Once Upon a Time and live action versions. We can be tail cousins!! I will third the suggestion of neoprene; its floaty and a pain to see but I'll last much longer than a Lycra or spandex tail and be easier to paint (If that's what you're planning to do).

What should my base color be? So it will be easiest to paint

White would be best. You'll have a hard time getting the green to show up on a black base.

True. Does anyone know the best way to get some?

I've never found white neoprene, so buying a white dive suit might be easiest.

FYI- foamorder lists white neoprene as available for order. http://www.foamorder.com/neoprene.html
