How to Explain... chronic illness

So I deal with chronic digestive tract stuff and I just had to call in to work because of it. I've been in and out of the bathroom all day and my boss mentioned me missing work a couple times over the past few months and I kinda feel shitty both physically and emotionally. How do I talk to people about this? Is there a way to work it out with my boss? I have a nurse and a doctor and the nurse is all 'let's just wait (forever) and see if the probiotic pill you started several MONTHS ago works.' We'll just give it 'a little more time'. >.> I just emailed her to get me an appointment with my doctor. But I hate letting my boss and team down and I hate looking like I'm just a complainer or lazy. :( So... any advice anyone??? I'm in the USA if that makes any difference?

You should join a support group online or in person, they have whole resources for how to deal with this stuff when it comes to your employers, along with your legal rights. I live with chronic illness as well.

I left my last job because of something similar. I have found that taking the time to sit down with your boss and explain to them that you have what can basically be considered a medical handicap helps tremendously. My current boss knows that I have multiple health issues and we set up some basic guidelines for what to do when I have a flare up. You don't need to go into great detail, but talking plainly with your manager can be very worthwhile.

^ this is really true but in some settings they can exploit you if you give them this information. It varies from state to state what they're allowed to do or obligated to do once you disclose things. I'd like to think most employers are understanding but it really depends on the type of job you do, so proceed with caution!

Thanks guys. I seriously do NOT trust the store manager where I work so will have to be a bit careful. She's got a reputation that, while I have no personal experience with, is that she will throw people under the bus. So we'll see.

Contact your county's employment office (it'll be the same place as unemployment) and speak with someone regarding your rights/responsibilities regarding your health considerations. They'll help you with the people above the bus throwing manager and help you manage the balance between your job and health issues. Good luck!

I really hope you get it all sorted out - it's bad enough having an illness in itself never mind added stress because of work.

I've needed quite a bit of time off sick last year, and I have regular hospital check ups anyway. Thankfully my boss has been fantastic about it all - I don't think I'd be able to cope otherwise!
