Not sure if anyone has posted the teaser trailer for this yet. It definitely looks like a comedy. Will be coming out soon if you happen to live in the east. A English subtitle version will likely come soon after.

Awesome! Stephen Chow is so talented. I wish there was more information about this, like if and when it will get an american release.

Bwaaa haa haaaa ... The Mermaid (originally titled "Mermaid" 美人鱼 in China) is out, and it is the funniest film to come out of China since Kung Fu Hustle!

Here's a great English-language review

http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/the-mermaid-2016

It's a massive hit. It broke every Chinese box office record that exists when it opened in China

http://www.theguardian.com/film/2016/feb/22/global-box-office-the-mermaid-china-record-zootopia-how-to-be-single

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mermaid_%282016_film%29

and is currently the 2nd biggest movie in the world, behind Deadpool.

So where can you see this thing? Anywhere, if you live in China or southeast Asia.

In North America, only in big cities with significant Asian communities, as far as I can tell. Not so easy, elsewhere.

Sony Pictures has the overseas distribution rights, and I agree with the review above that this is another movie where the suits are bungling the promotion and distribution.

It's showing here in Toronto, but only in 2 theatres, the Cineplex at Yonge & Dundas downtown (not too far from Toronto's Chinatown at Spadina & Dundas)

http://www.tribute.ca/showtimes/movie/toronto/mei-ren-yu-the-mermaid/116098/ (http://www.tribute.ca/showtimes/movie/toronto/mei-ren-yu-the-mermaid/116098/)

and in the Markham Cineplex (in Toronto's Chinatown North)

http://www.tribute.ca/showtimes/theatre/cineplex-cinemas-markham-and-vip/aaxnd/

It's also showing in Montreal, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver (Surrey?), I know that much. Check your city on tribute.ca.

It was incredibly hard to find. Google had a full page of all of Disney's The Little Mermaid showings (yes, The Little Mermaid still screens all over Toronto in small showings) even when i typed in "mermaid 2016" in quotes with Toronto to try and force it to find this screening. It just went and showed me all the 2016 screenings of The Little Mermaid. Google has really gone downhill.

The entertainment listings on tribute.ca have it listed under a transliterated version of its Chinese title (Mei ren yu) and The Mermaid and a search on there will pull it up.

So North Americans, I would suggest searching on local entertainment websites under The Mermaid 2016, Mei ren yu, or 美人鱼 (the latter actually did pull up some Chinese-language local info on the film on Google, like from the Sing Tao paper.) Maybe it will be easier to find in the United States?

Bottom line: you may have to do some creative searching to find this show, and you may have to travel a bit to see it, but do it. You'll have the time of your life.

And Torontonians- get your merbutts on down to Yonge & Dundas to see this spectacle. Who knows how long it's going to last at the Cineplex.

BTW- it's showing in 3D at the Cineplex here, so if you spring for the 3DAVX ticket you get to see this rising from the tub in all its 3 metre tall glory:

OK mermaids, tell me this isn't the merman of your dreams :thinks:

It's rated PG, but you might want to think twice about taking a young merling to this show, since the scene where the bad guys massacre the mermaids is pretty gory.

So while I'm glad this movie is showing in Toronto.... There's no way I'm able to make it down there since I've moved further north... Also I'm in the middle of boycotting Sony. :shifty eyes: #freekesha #sonysupportsrape
