View Full Version : Fiberglass monofin hardness?

Hi everyone, I'm in the process of making my second silicone tail, and since I'm planning on doing a big fluke, I figured a fiberglass mono would be best.
I'm planning on getting a leaderfin, but I have no idea what to do for the stiffness. I figure I'll need soft or medium, but I'm worried that soft will be too soft.
Does anyone know what the hardness of a competitor monofin is? Ideally, I'd like to get whatever hardness is equal to that. I've done a lot of looking around but haven't found any conclusive answers.

Hi Nerissa, I got a leaderfin for my tail too, I ended up getting the medium and it is quite stiff. It looks great in the water though! I'm fairly sure the competitors are a medium, but I haven't owned one so I can't really say.

Yeah, in the threads I found most people guessed that the competitors were a medium, but nobody had an actual answer, the threads were quite old though.
If the medium has nice movement in the water, I'll definitely go with that! Would you say that it has a decent flow to it?

I have a Competitor monofin and I also have a leaderfin in a medium stiffness. In my opinion since I have used both fins I would have to say that the Competitor is stiffer and would probably be a comparative at a hard stiffness in the leaderfin range.
I hope this helps

It does, it feels very stiff out of the water, but flows pretty well in the water. Maybe look up some videos of it in the water with the different stiffnesses? Ask the leaderfins guys on etsy for videos if you can't find any, they are awesomely helpful!

Thanks!! Is the competitor a lot stiffer? And since you've owned both, which do you think would be better for someone who has only used softer monofins?

There aren't many videos that I can find, and the ones I have found don't say what hardness they are. I'll definitely send them a message, thanks!
