Tiny human tail! (

I have a painting on my wall that has a silhouette of a mermaid and the quote "I must be a mermaid, for I have no fear of depths and a great fear of shallow living." And my two(almost 3!) year old niece saw it, sighed, and said "I wish I had a mermaid tail because you have a mermaid tail." She knows how to sweet talk, and I told her she might get one for her birthday on Sunday. I have a ton of white spandex left over and I have green tulle to put on the bottom so she can walk around in it. I'd also make her a top with the spandex too, but I don't want to hand paint it, she'll grow out of it in like 6 months so I don't want to put a million hours of effort into it. I was thinking about dyeing it with general fabric dye, but I'm just curious as to which brand would dye spandex better [emoji848] Any ideas are greatly appreciated! [emoji4]

Its very hard to dye spandex because the fabric repels water. Fabric markers and paints would work better.

I think the only way to dye it is to stretch the fabric while dying. Even then the dye (RIT is the best fabric dye I have ever used) probably wont dye super dark and so you would have to re-dye it several times. It might just be easier to buy one yard of a different color spandex at joans.

Daww cute!! If you get a fan paint brush that makes quick scale patterns with fabric paint. Can be done in an evening with a bit of drying time.

Has anyone tried speedball screen printing ink? I saw that might work, but if not, fabric paint will have to do, it's a small tail so I could probably finish it by Sunday. [emoji39]

I have screen printed my own shirts and if you use speedball make sure you heat set it afterwords to the proper temp. If you dont the paint doesn't cure and can come off.

The green marker did not last long at all, I thought I'd be able to finish the whole tail on just one marker since it's so small, but I got about halfway on just the first side. I'll be buying 4 more today..

Is it all going to be green? If so why not dye it with a dark dye (since lycra spandex dyes lighter) and then add colors on top?

The back will be different, and the dye seemed like more of a hassle because I'd have to buy so much to dye the spandex, and I'd have to keep it stretched while dying it.
