View Full Version : Selkie Skin

This counts as clothing right? [emoji14]

So, since it's winter and gross out, I had the idea to do a selkie photoshoot. I'm not planning on making a swimmable seal tail as of right now; I just want to make the selkie pelt. You know, the one that they can shed and if stolen, they are unable to return to the sea. I'm (stupidly) hoping to do the shoot itself once the Hudson freezes over a bit so I can get some good scenery. But for right now I'm just planning out the outfit.

I asked my mertender if she would help me out with the photography and she got really excited about the idea and started thinking up a selkie warrior look for herself! So that will be a fun challenge as well. Crushed velvet seems to be on sale at JoAnn's right now so I want to grab some soon.

I hope to start with a gray fabric and paint it to look like a Harbor Seal. Does anyone have a suggestion for what sort of paint works best on crushed velvet? It doesn't necessarily have to be waterproof since I won't be swimming in this.

I'm gonna draw out some ideas today, but right now I'm thinking just a simple cloak. Maybe with a hood that has seal facial features; whiskers and such. I'm using this pelt for inspiration.

I was really scared too look up skins and pelts lol. I thought there'd be some gruesome stuff, but I lucked out.

That sounds so cool! I'm interested to see how it turns out!
As for paint, I've been using Setacolor fabric paint. It's flexible once heat set and I've also been able to stretch the fabric I painted it on without it cracking or anything.

It's great - it comes in opaque, transparent and shimmer. The same brand also makes porcelain and glass paints too though so don't get them mixed up!

So I didn't quite make it to the fabric shop the other day =\ but! I found this on thier website and I think it's a good starting point. I may just order it online if I can figure out how much I need.

The "Heather" color is what I think I'll go with.

I know you're making a skin, have you thought of possibly making a neoprene seal tail with a velvet over later???

Thanks, everyone!

Kaila, if I have extra fabric, maybe I'll try a tail. Or just make pajama bottoms [emoji14]

I'm going to order the fabric online since getting to the store is just not in the cards (read as: it's cold out and I'm lazy). I can always return it if it's not what I'm looking for. I think 4 yards would be good for two pelts, so I'll get 5 just to be safe.

Edit: it's 30% off plus another 15% so I got 6 yards for $30.

Sooooo my fabric came... And it's bright green??? I double checked that I ordered the right color and it's definitely a dark gray in the picture on the website... So I'm gonna return it and put this project on the back burner lol. Plus, this weird weather hasn't really frozen the river so I'm not getting the scenery I wanted :c

I'm definitely going to let them know when I send it back. The name of the color is correct on what I received vs what it says on the website so maybe they just put up a bad picture?
