Dragon-Skin Silicone Hardness and Amounts?

So I was looking at silicone so I could price my tail-making (since I am still in the planning stage) and when I went to Smooth-On's website, I noticed they have 3 different silicone hardness levels, and several different cure times. What do guys use and what do you think works best? Also, how much silicone do you think I would need for just the fluke of a tail? The fluke will be beyond huge (in between 3-4 feet wide). I don't want to overbuy by too much though (I want just enough to do some testing and get used to pigmenting silicone and then enough for the massive fluke.) I heard about 1 and a half gallons is what is needed for a regular fluke, so maybe 2 for my project?

Remember that each gallon kit of Dragonskin is about 7kg (16 pounds) and so your fluke will be very very heavy if you use that much. My first fluke I made only used about 4 kg of silicone, and it is still a reasonable thickness. It really depends on your design!

Okay, I might possibly go with a stiffer silicone (since it is just the fluke). We shall see. And really? You only used 4kg? I dont plan for it to be super thick, so I might can get away with just one gallon (or one and a half) then. I thought I had heard somewhere that about one and a half gallons was the standard amount for most tails, but that could be really wrong. Thanks so much!

For the fluke no more then A20 otherwise it's too stiff.

I think too stiff or not stiff enough depend on the user. I'd personally love a super stiff fluke.

I only used about 1.75 gallon kits to make my whole first tail, and that was with a very thick body. The silicone is very durable, so you don't need to make it very thick for the fluke and I regret making the body so thick.

Honestly, I suggest you order some trial size kits and play around with different thicknesses and shore hardnesses. It's the best way to accurately gauge what and how much you'll need. Plus you'll have hands on experience with the material before you start your tail.

Hmmm I am using 10 for my Fluke. I never thought of a stronger silicone for the Fluke....I liked the flowy look and assumed I made the right choice.
Glad i read about this today as i am making two fluke molds the second needs to be more stiff. (:

I used shore 30 for my 3' x 2.5' fluke and it wasn't much stiffer than 10. My fluke is fairly thin and translucent, and my monofin goes almost to the edges of my fin. My entire personal tail used one and a half gallons, and I'm a large woman (size 16).

May I ask why you want such a huge fluke?

I would suggest you to use the shore 10 we too user it for our customers tails as we built a monofin inside the fluke and it gives the tail its stiffness 😉
