Hi everyone! So this will be my second tail attempt my first I ended up not really liking were it was going so I shelved it. I've been planning this one for a while and even asked the amazing fifi tigg for help. (Thank you again!)

This tail will be a hybrid silicone and sequin tail.
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160124/d7003bfaee36e6331576f45254ab4455.jpg

That's the design of the front and I never drew the back but the fins will look like this
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160124/dbdfd57e752ad693ce314b006d04ca84.jpg

I've already sewn together the neoprene skin (I bought 3 yards for $60)

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160124/b43e3eea70f1d02ce7fda7106d12cbfd.jpg
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160124/9d1bb516824aae83bc9f0f550b4b2d89.jpg

But now I can't move forward until I get my sequins! I don't want to buy the color for the silicone because I want to make sure it'll match the sequins and I don't want to buy the silicone yet because I don't want it just sitting there because I have to sew the sequins on before I do any silicone work

Thanks everyone!
These were my original choices but I was told they were out of stock and wouldn't be stocked again.

And these are the colors I just emailed them about to check on stock
35340

Oh and I forgot to ask Fifi, Is it possible to put glitter into the silicone when I'm adding the color to it? Or should I wait until I put the layer on top of the color then add another layer just for glitter?

I think Pearlie has mentioned before that glitter can cut its way out of silicone, she might be able to answer your question.

Mermaid Mystery
01-24-2016, 09:33 PM
I know CoyoteWalker uses glitter in some of her toys but that's the extent of my knowledge. I think you add it while adding color, but again I'm not the most credible source.

Mermaid Momo
01-24-2016, 09:42 PM
I think Pearlie has mentioned before that glitter can cut its way out of silicone, she might be able to answer your question.
I think that was the larger glitter, I'm going to be using extra fine glitter (so the glitter that's basically powder) because I didn't want it to be obvious that I put glitter in there haha

Mermaid Kate Silverfin
01-24-2016, 09:46 PM
Fine glitter is okay, I just mix it in with the silicone. Large glitter will create a pocket around it, so when the silicone is flexed the glitter moves and cuts its way out.
Also, your design is stunning!

Mermaid Kate Silverfin

I've used fine and ultra fine glitter without any problem. I did do several tests with this gorgeous chunky glitter that I found, but as Pearlie has said before, it cuts its way out, even if it is a fairly round shape :(

Do you get lazy just before YOUR western celebrations?

There's a lot to prepare for when its nearing Chinese New Year. Its like any celebration, you need time off to prepare, make invites etc. Its not just a day off and then back to work.

Sorry, didn't mean to make anyone upset. Lazy was a poor word choice, I just meant that maybe they were preoccupied by something other than work. I'm sorry for upsetting you Jaffa. I didn't mean it like that.

About Alibaba, make sure to email them as soon as the holiday is over. Since they may have a lot of emails coming in, yours may get overlooked or replied to late. By sending them an extra email you have more chance of a reply sooner rather then later or not at all.

Mermaid Momo

Really petty confession:

I'm worried about keeping my original design because it's almost exactly the same color pattern and scheme as the new finfolk tail
https://scontent-dfw1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xft1/v/t1.0-9/12592218_576131909217418_6743806425727022759_n.jpg ?oh=f712fd7a39122243dcd5aada0f0e08dd&oe=57460FE8

And I don't want to seem like I'm copying :(

I just really want a tail that's bright and colorful and "flirty" if that makes any sense.

Mermaid Momo
02-01-2016, 04:03 PM
Also I was planning on going to get more greenery to add to my top and flowers too but last night we had a thundersnow (it was freaky cool) and now we're buried in snow so I'm not sure I'll make it to the craft store.

Mermaid Julianne
02-01-2016, 04:14 PM
Don't be worried! You wouldn't be copying them, this tail was posted today. Plus, there are only so many colors that exist. Many tails have similar color schemes but that doesn't mean they have to be the same. If you love your design, you should stick with it. Its your personal tail and you shouldn't let other tails put you down.

Also, love the idea of putting flowers on your top, hopefully you'll be able to get to the store!

Mermaid Wesley
02-01-2016, 04:47 PM
I wouldn't worry either. I'm sure your fluke will be different enough that it won't be noticeable that the color schemes are similar

Don't worry about it. The color are similar but with the amount of tails in the world there is always going to be similar color schemes and your fluke is way different.

Don't worry about it! Tell me if I'm wrong, but I saw in an old thread Raina said that it's not the tail, it's the mer who wears it <3 Heck, there are so many beautiful, unique mers out there who have even fin fun tails (which I have absolutely nothing against), and they are all fabulous in their own way. Don't stress!! Besides, it's not like yours is exactly the same as that one :D

By the way, I'm loving your top you made <333

I'm trying to figure out how many yards of neoprene to order. Did 3 yards give you enough seam allowance to make adjustments? I'm not sure how high I want my waist to be and I'm adding a zipper to the bottom of my fluke.

Yep! My waist went all the way up to over my belt button to account for my butt. Then I just went in and shortened the front. And there's a lot left over too. If I was you I'd draw up a mini scale version on your tail and try to fit it on a mini scale version of 3 yard by however wide the neoprene is. That's what I did

Careful with caulk. Not sure if it's skin safe???

Starfrit
02-09-2016, 02:36 PM
Silicone caulking should generally be safe as long as you get the kind that's pure silicone. It's not dragonskin, but it's not as bad as, say, Alex Plus.

That's my understanding, anyway. I've heard that both in the mercommunity and fishkeeping community (the caulking is often used to build aquariums), though I haven't done much research into it myself to be double-sure.

PearlieMae
02-09-2016, 04:26 PM
It takes a long time for the acetic acid to cure/de-gas out of silicone caulking, and it can burn your skin.

Momo, you are cuter than a speckled pup in a red wagon!

Seraphina Suds
02-09-2016, 05:14 PM
I used 100% silicone meant for sealing aquariums so it was fish safe. Make sure you wear gloves, a face mask, and work in a really well ventilated area. The stuff stinks x-x

Sent from my C6725 using Tapatalk

Mermaid Wesley
02-09-2016, 06:30 PM
You have to let it de gas for a long ass time before its skin safe. It should have some sort of info online or on those msds sheet things

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

PearlieMae
02-09-2016, 08:36 PM
They don't include that info in the msds because it's off-label use. If they went so far as to give info on using it to wear against your skin, then they open themselves to liability. That's why it just says avoid skin contact/safe for aquariums. Glass boxes can't sue you.

Mermaid Wesley
02-09-2016, 09:30 PM

Yeah I'm using the same silicone that Fifi uses for hers (and I think it's the same kind Seraphina used too)

I'm not sure how cold weather will effect the curing; i made mine in summer. I let it dry a full 24 hours before doing anything else to it. Okay so I'm thinking the weather is affecting curing time of the silicone. Being that yesterday was pretty chilly and windy and today is the same but with a tiny drizzle of rain.

The fins all have fully cured but the scale swatches haven't. Only certain areas are fully cured (see the video for which parts)

Sent from my GT-I9500 using Tapatalk

EDIT: Tapatalk keeps crashing when I try to upload the video. So basically the outer edges of the scale swatches are fully cured while the center parts are only partially cured. The tops of the center are cured enough so that I can touch it but when I touch it it moves like I'm poking a water balloon. I'm thinking it just needs more time to cure?

In the mean time I won't do anymore silicone work until tomorrow or Saturday even though I was hoping to be doing the other side of the fins and my larger hip fins Saturday I'll instead be doing the clear coat and glitter coat.

I'm also going to go get more silicone for the other sides and to set my fluke

Wait...Is this with the caulk? It draws on the moisture in the atmosphere and if it's damp out, the surface can cure first, sealing in uncured caulk. That's where that water balloon feeling comes from. You have to work thin with caulk.

I've read somewhere, and tried it a couple of times, that adding some cornstarch to the caulk helps it cure, and it also stiffens the caulk. It's what you add to it when you're making home made Sugru.

Yeah it was the caulk. Good think I know about the moisture now so I can avoid doing scales or large areas when it's moist out.

I've so far finished both sides of the extra fins and I'm adding them to the tail tonight. I also sealed my fluke (while keeping drainage holes open). I couldn't post videos through the app so here are some from my instagram.

I made my body double on my own. It wasn't easy, but it is possible. I started by wrapping myself in cling film then started taping from my ankles up. Then I cut (VERY carefully!) from the waist down. I stuffed it with wood shavings from pets at home - it worked really well!

Momo, could you answer a couple quick Q's about the process you've used? I am thinking of making a tail like this to bridge the gap between the fabric tail I have now and a full silicone. Your tail has turned out so fantastic so far!
So you are just using GE 100% all purpose silicone and spreading it on the neoprene? And it sticks securely? (I always thought there was a curing inhibition between neoprene and silicone, so I guess that just applies to dragonskin then) What are you using the paint thinner (that was next to the silicone in your pic) for? And then, once the silicone is tacky and not wet, you just dust the pigment on? Are you using any brushes to dust the pigment on? And, final Q, what are you using for your clear topcoat? From your test pics it looked like the silicone you used is more milky than clear, so will you be using a different product? Or just use a very thin layer of the same product?
So sorry for all the Q's! I dont want to bombard your thread, just wanted to clarify a few things I was curious about :) Your tail looks so fabulous so far, I cant wait to see you in it!

Hi everyone! So this will be my second tail attempt my first I ended up not really liking were it was going so I shelved it. I've been planning this one for a while and even asked the amazing fifi tigg for help. (Thank you again!)

This tail will be a hybrid silicone and sequin tail.
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160124/d7003bfaee36e6331576f45254ab4455.jpg

That's the design of the front and I never drew the back but the fins will look like this
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160124/dbdfd57e752ad693ce314b006d04ca84.jpg

I've already sewn together the neoprene skin (I bought 3 yards for $60)

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160124/b43e3eea70f1d02ce7fda7106d12cbfd.jpg
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160124/9d1bb516824aae83bc9f0f550b4b2d89.jpg

But now I can't move forward until I get my sequins! I don't want to buy the color for the silicone because I want to make sure it'll match the sequins and I don't want to buy the silicone yet because I don't want it just sitting there because I have to sew the sequins on before I do any silicone work

So you are just using GE 100% all purpose silicone and spreading it on the neoprene? And it sticks securely? (I always thought there was a curing inhibition between neoprene and silicone, so I guess that just applies to dragonskin then)
Yep, once it's on it's nearly impossible to pull it off (I tried and I haven't been able to pull it off so far so I'm guessing it takes a lot of muscle.) I don't think neoprene inhibits silicone curing at all since a lot of tailmakers offer silicone and neoprene hybrids, I think it's just if they cake on the silicone that the curing poses a problem, or if there's latex in the tail.

What are you using the paint thinner (that was next to the silicone in your pic) for?
The paint thinner is to thin the silicone to use as a top coat to seal in the color

And then, once the silicone is tacky and not wet, you just dust the pigment on? Are you using any brushes to dust the pigment on?
Yep, I use a fluffy blush brush or makeup brush to dust it on. (I used one of my old ones but I'm going to go pick up one of the $1 ELF ones)
And, final Q, what are you using for your clear topcoat? From your test pics it looked like the silicone you used is more milky than clear, so will you be using a different product? Or just use a very thin layer of the same product?

When I first put it down it come out milky then turns clear as it dries (so the test pictures were not only really thick layers of silicone but it took them 4 days to fully dry/cure since it was really humid and had a light drizzle that week)

Hi I wanted to ask how do u keep the form of the tail when u swim if the mono fin doesn't take up the full space of the fluke
Do you mean how do I keep the fluke shape? The monofin is sealed inside of the tail and that holds up that part and the fluke shape is maintained by the way I cut the fabric into the shape I wanted. (so no matter what, it'll always be in that shape because it's how the fabric is) I'm not sure if that is what you're asking though haha.

I hope that clears some of that up :) if not feel free to ask more questions

I only bought one of each and still have a lot left of the gold and purple (pink on the other hand not so much ) I'd order 2 of the ones you'd use a lot and one of the colors you'd use sparingly.

I haven't been working on it since starting the scales (I ran out of silicone and need to buy more but haven't had the $$) so it's been sitting under my bed since then.

I can say I've put it on like 4 times and just sat around in it , and made my neighbor carry me around a few times. And this tail is so heavy! Now I really see why silicone isn't recommended for a first tail (thankfully this'll be me 4th tail) I'm hoping that once it's finished Paul will be able to carry me, and it won't be as hard to lift the fluke in the water as it is out

So that means I won't be able to work on it until I come home in May. Momo, a couple more questions if you don't mind: About how long did you have to wait before the silicone hardened enough to be tacky so you could apply the pigment? And How are you applying your top coat? Are you mixing the paint thinner with the silicone separately and then just lathering it on with a brush/hands? And, last question, how did you do your scales? Did you just squeeze directly from the tube? or did you put the silicone in something else (like a piping bag)? Sorry for all the questions, I hope I am not coming off as annoying :sweat drop:

I waited about 30 minutes, but the actual time varied for each part. I just poked it with my finger to see if the silicone stayed put or if it came off on it.

For my top coat I'm mixing the silicone and paint thinner in a separate container, then using a brush to brush it on and then topping it off with my glitter (Which I just remembered I need more of because my fluke killed my stocks)

For the scales I squeezed them directly from the tube. I'm using a caulking gun to make it easier, before I scaled the tail I did the test swatches I posted so that I could get a hang of piping them (each scale section I did on the test are actually piped differently )

Not annoying at all :)

BTW, does anyone know what kind of glitter Kariel uses on her tails of art? the glitter I have now is very fine and very nice but not enough shimmer for my liking and if I put too much it looks like mermaid dandruff

I'm guessing is was probably Spectraflair, a super expensive silver/rainbow pigment used in Automotive painting, manufacturing, and a few other things. It used to be available in a few different colors but due to the other things only one color seems to be available at this time.

I'm going to be home from Thursday till Sunday, Thursday night it out, we're having a bbq to introduce the 2 halves of the family (mine and Paul's) to my Uncle, but Friday to Sunday is free game! I already took my materials down during spring break but I have to buy more pigments which I'll be doing next week along with getting silicone to try and finish.

I hope I'll be able to finish the tail in those few days! It'll probably be around 80 degrees so it should cure fast enough that I don't have to sit and wait forever.

In preparation for going back home I actually made a neoprene top to take home and scale (I can't decide on colors, I want it to match my tail of course but I want more color in it, like a tropical fish because at the moment my tail is more sunset mermaid than tropical mermaid. I'm thinking making a bright green to accent? Anyone have ideas? I'll post pictures of the neoprene top skin soon.)

What about adding some bright blue? The green may work depending on the shade but I feel as though it could clash with the other colours a bit.

oooh blue might work, and blue was in my original tail design before I went rogue lol. Maybe blue veining? Or blue tips instead of gold like on the tail fluke?

Yes a blue tipped fluke sounds gorgeous! Especially if it was a nice sky blue! :)

It actually took me 1 day, 2 days if you count when I made the top base (I drafted my own pattern for it and made it out of neoprene)

That's my bra hook, I butchered an old bra because I forgot to buy one before going home 😟 and then I proceeded to attach it to the wrong side lol (I wanted to attach it to the underside so the hooks showed but the rest didn't but got distracted since I was watching My nephew and as I was prepping to attach the 2 together he threw up like the exorcist lol)

I was thinking of adding some of the sane color on the top but couldn't decide where

Do you do all that on the neoprene, or do you go over and use some sort of release to get it off the flat surface?
