So there's this blog that started in 2011 called Life With A Tail. The author claims to be a real mermaid with a leathery feeling tail that transforms every time she touches water and isn't sure how she got that way, but it may have something to do with dissecting a kangaroo rat. Well, if I dissect a rat will I pop a grey scaly tail with with a silver fin every time I touch water? I don't know about the reality of this blog, she even provided a picture of her tail. I would link to it but I'm not sure links are allowed here. As far as I know, there are no real mermaids out there, just us and our community :). But I'd love a real tail too!

Maybe the reason she hasn't posted since 2012 is because she's being tested on in a lab by scientists after the Government found out? We humans are a horrible species and won't hesitate to do something like that in the name of science.

I am actually good friends with the author of that blog. It wasn't a kangaroo rat it was a Mexican opossum she dissected. They are known for the rich mixture of mystical properties in their blood. Having practiced voodoo for the last 15 years in my home state of Louisiana, I am very familiar with this animal. In 1994 she sat in a bathtub filled with the blood of the animal and her legs slowing began turning into something that resembled a fish fin. I was contacted along with the village Shaman to observe her in case any demonic possession became apparent. T'was not the case. But as is often the case, the government heard about her and she was relocated to a facility in Canada for further study. Unfortunately none of us have heard from her since.

Yeah I heard if mermaids exist, they are NOT pretty like in the movies. They don't have long flowing hair like Ariel or Aquamarine. They would be bald or have very short hair, otherwise they'd be affected by poor aerodynamics. Second, they would have a layer or two of blubber like a whale or other marine mammal. The ocean gets to freezing temperatures and a skinny Ariel-type mermaid would die within the first night at sea. Real mermaids would have one body color and their whole body would likely be covered in scales rather than just the bottom half with gorgeous tanned skin on the top half. They would have sharp pointed teeth, not dull human ones. I don't doubt something that resembles a mermaid exists, as the ocean is huge and we have knowledge of less than 5% of all oceanic species.

The whole idea of using a spell or potion to become a mermaid is ridiculous. I'd love to be a real mermaid, with the hair, shell top, and everything, but you just can't. Not in this life anyway. The thing about this blog was it was so descriptive and you can tell she did a really good job of making people think it was real. Mermaiding is fun and it gives us a chance to let go of our human side and embrace our inner desires to be a mermaid or merman. Silicone/neoprene/latex and even some fabric tails are very realistic and really makes one look and feel like a mermaid, especially in water. This is the closest were ever going to get to being a real mermaid unless there's some scientific breakthrough.

Literally almost EVERY mermaid movie/series relies on this principle. Aquamarine, H2O, Splash, etc. The only one I can think of that Doesnt is The Little Mermaid. Ariel was born a mermaid. If you're gonna write an entire blog about mermaid life, why not be creative and rely on stereotypes? Also, you hit the nail on the head with the fact that if mermaids are real, they would be hiding in deep water inaccessible to most things because we humans are a horrible species in general. i never even seen that tbh. It would be hard to taxonomically classify a real mermaid, as they would be a mammal-fish hybrid, which is just impossible in nature. It would have a mix of mammalian warm blood and the cold blood of a fish. That is unless they actually werent half fish like the myths and had a more dolphin-like,scaleless tail, the same way whales and dolphins appear to be fish but aren't.

There are mammals that have scales.

I don't see how a mammalian mermaid would have a problem having a scaly tail.
There is the Pangolin (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pangolin) but I think that's about it. In the water, I think all creatures with tails that go up and down have no scales.
