View Full Version : Which Monofin Is Best For A Homemade Tail?

I would love to make a tail one day so I can have the colors I want, but none of the monofins I see aren't particularly fish fin shaped. I heard the Finis Rapid is really good but it's not really mermaid-friendly. The shape is too round but it's a nice size. If I ever decide to start this project ( whenever I get a sewing machine lol) Is there a way to modify the Monofin or even make my own out of plexiglass or Lexan or something like that? I'd prefer the latter since if you cut a Finis Rapid the size will reduce. Im open to anything.

There are lots of tutorials on how to cut lexan or plexiglass into a monofin. P.S. I think that is a really good option, especially if you want a more translucent fluke!

The Rapid is popular due to it's pricing. More fish-shaped ones include the Aquarius, Hydra, Mahina, Suntails, and a number of others.

You'll find an overview of common monofins in Monofins: the Official Thread (http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?2909-MONOFINS-THE-OFFICIAL-THREAD), stickied at the top of the forum. The thread also includes tips on modifying Rapids and making fins out of Lexan.

Thanks! I'll have to check that thread out. I seen something about cutting a Rapid which was cool but I didn't like the size reduction. Ill definitely refer back to this once im ready to start!

Get a Mahina Merfin. Its easy to cut, and you only need to cut a little bit and you'll have the shape you desire.

I like mine too, but its very tiring as I've been practicing with smaller monofins.

Don't use plexiglass! It can shatter and cut you. Lexan can break but it doesn't shatter into sharp shards.

Sun Tail monofins are fish shaped. The adult one is same size as the Mahina Merfin.
