Finding your way as a Mer

One thing I have noticed is that it seems like every mer stands for something and has a platform they stand on. Weather its environmentalism, sustainability, education or something else. I've always wanted to do this as well, not because it's the hip thing to do or because I feel it would better my standing in the community or the world. Because I have a topic that is near and dear to my heart, reading. Though Raina was already doing such an amazing job and she was doing things with it I could never do as I am terrible at teaching and memorizing facts. Honestly it was a little disheartening I didn't want to step on any toes, be seen as coping, or unoriginal.

A little bit of background, I didn't just choose reading out of a hat, I choose it because my parents and I were told I would never learn how to read or at least never have any sort of competence. This was because I am severely Dyslexic, I didn't learn to read until I was about 13 and I wasn't able to read fluidly until 14 or so. A long time after my peers picked it up at 6 and 7. However because of hard work and dedication I overcame my dyslexia and am now on the 98th percentile for reading and writing comprehension.

But now I have finally figured out where I want to go and how I'm going to get there. Not everything has to be activist, not everything has to be huge. Sometimes it can be as small as a ten minute speach. Sometimes it can be as simple as a mermaid sharing a part of her life and encouraging you that it is possible to do the impossible, no matter what the obstacles are. You don't have to know everything to be able to speak and you don't have to worry about if you got the facts right or wrong if the only facts you speak are those of experience. I'm not perfect and this will take a lot of perfecting, I'm sure I'll be seeking advice from all of you in the future, but for now I just felt like sharing this. I don't stand for anything. It's not nessessary to have a cause, and in all honesty, I'm a little 'caused' out. I'm in no way suggesting that the cause anyone represents is not valid - more power to you. To me it's too much of a good thing, and it's to the point of overkill. :S Just my 2 cents.

Aela I agree with you, honestly I wouldn't be doing anything if this wasn't dear to me. For a little while I was considering dropping it all because I know I don't need one and even know it's not going to be like Sirena the Dyslexic Mermaid, just a little bonus.

Mostly though so I can help children realize their dreams, that's the only reason. I had wished there was some one for me to look up to when I was little, there wasn't, so I want to fill that vacancy for other children.

That all sounds wonderful, Sirena! This is a cause that is clearly very close to your heart, and that will show through the way you present it and share it with others. I agree that having a cause for the sake of having a cause can get really old and seem unnecessary, but I think if you have something that is close to your heart that you want to share with others using your mer persona, that's a wonderful thing and people will love to hear about it!

I love how in this community everyone has something to offer. It's not just a bunch of people who dress up as mythical creatures. We have mers who stand for important causes, mere who are crafty and make amazing things, mere who are artists, mere who want to share music (that's my thing!)…. No two mermaids/men are ever the same, I love that so much about our community.

Mermaid Dreamer, there is a Nature Center where I live and they would come to the school and do presentations about (and with) the different animals they were taking care of. It was always one of my favorite class days! You'll let us know when something happens with the shows right ^_^
