It just sounds so fun that such a unique and unusual career exists. I'd love to take swimming lessons and become really good, and perform in a silicone or neoprene tail while dressed as my cartoon mermaid character. Id be great at shows, parents could hire me to perform at their kids birthday party, and so much more. Now, the downside. It just sounds really stupid when you say "professional mermaid" out loud, and that's grounds to get mocked by any non-mermaids who know nothing of our community and think the whole thing is some weird obsession. They don't know that professional mermaiding is a real thing and people like Hannah Fraser and Linden Wolbert ( I think that's her last name) do it for a living. What would I do to dive into the world of professional mermaiding if I so wanted to pursue it, despite all the downsides?

Being a professional mermaid isn't simple, yea there are downsides but when you put all the love and effort into it, and see the smiling faces and curious looks as well, it just comes full circle. When I tell people Im a professional mermaid, I don't come out and say it, I tell them "I work in party and event entertainment, for kids and adults.. Im a professional mermaid performer.." people's eyes light up and they want to see pictures, ask questions and always ask for a card. I cant even tell you how many times I've gotten parties by word of mouth or someone recommended me.

Its alot of fun and yea there will be bad days and painful/sore days, there will always be days when you don't feel like your good enough and just want to not do it. But as long as you have the support and love from friends and family, you push yourself and when your there, you live in that moment. Your Job is amazing, you make kids excited and parents are just enthralled by seeing a mermaid (and sometimes they turn into kids themselves) The best moments are just when the kids don't want you to leave, want to tackle hug you or keep you in their pools or bathtubs forever and sometimes just make you feel just as special as you make them feel.

So There are things you can learn from a book and there are some things you learn from experience. If you want to be a professional Mermaid, you push yourself, you ignore naysayers opinions because its your choice, your thinking out of the box. It's your adventure to follow. Work hard, stay determined and don't give up. And Don't Ever let a bad party or bad day make you change your mind because it gets so much better. I could tell you stories myself. Be strong love yourself and love your work. Go do it.

For some reason I wanna pronounce your name Aniya R instead of Raina XD. But thanks for the resources and do you happen to be Raina the Halifax Mermaid on YouTube?

I recently decided to go pro and I think saying "I'm a professional mermaid!" will actually be one of the fun parts. I'm already in the entertainment world (pro singer, fire performer, drummer, dancer) and when you have a fun unique job that you love, explaining it to people is something to be proud of, not embarrassed. Most of the time I'm surrounded by people who love and support what I do. If people actually give you weird vibes because you're in a non traditional career, then their opinions aren't important to you. I was in school to become a doctor when I left to become an artist. I realized that I constantly surrounded myself with creative artistic friends and that I actually had zero friends in the premed track. I realized I would have been miserable constantly working with people I didn't have anything in common with. Follow your dream and don't look back!
