I watch videos on YouTube on how to make potions to become a mermaid, and read the mermaid questions on Yahoo Answers. Why? Because it's Grade-A entertainment for us mers who know we can't physically become one, as they dont exist as far as we know. I love being a mermaid, I can't wait to go tail swimming in the summer and chatting with other mers in the community is fun too. I've noticed in all the videos, it's little girls who look younger than 13 that make the potions. I wonder if their parents know they're trying to become a mermaid, lol. It's perfectly fine if they think they can be real mermaids, they're young and all the potions look to just be seashells and salt water, which is a little risky to drink but fine as long as it's not in large amounts. They'll find out the truth when they're older. Then there's the annoying chain posts, like " Say H2O seven times repost, then touch water." Yahoo Answers is FLOODED with become a mermaid questions, just type in "mermaid" in the search bar and see for yourself. It's funny when they say stuff like "JUST GIVE ME SPELLS THAT U KNOW WORK FOR REAL DONT SAY THEY DONT EXIST OR IM REPORTING YOU!!!!" or something along those lines. Honestly it's ok to dream but these girls watch too much Mako Mermaids or H2O or whatever mermaid show is popular among preteens.

i believe there is an existing thread that discusses the harm of "mermaid spells and potions" on young people on the internet... i forget the thread title though.

loads of really good discussions though. if i find it i'll post a link here.

My daughter (9) makes them with her friend. They have sort of a wishful "yeah, I know it's not real, but just in case..." kind of attitude. They both have tails they swim in, so I've told them they're already mermaids! Their recipes can get quite creative. As long as they're not drinking anything icky, I don't see the harm.

I'm more concerned at their attitude that people on the internet cannot possibly be lying.

Some of these kids are so gullible. The latest one I've come across, tells you to drink a glass of vinegar and pour salt water on your legs. And in the comments, other kids say it works.

i never seen that one, but a lot of the spells I see say to get in the pool or bath and wear a piece of jewelry and say the spell ten times. A popular one is the "Insouciant inclemency" one. This is the spell that these girls swear up and down that it works. It's all over Yahoo Answers, Fanpop, etc.

Agh, god! Just plain vinegar is awful! My dad told me to gargle it once when I had a sore throat. It was so bad that it felt like my throat was burning! D:
