A painted fabric tail!

I thought I'd share my progress on finally putting together my tail!
I'm making it out of 'scuba knit' so it's thicker and sturdier than spandex but not as thicker as neoprene.

I'm a blue mermaid so I went with a beautiful blue named 'Bluebird'!

So far I've seen the fluke part to the body of the tail on both sides and have just started on some little fins!

This was my idea for making my fins. I sketched my shape and cut it out as a template. I then pinned it to a folded piece of fabric and sewed around it leaving a seam allowance and an opening for turning it in the right way.

I then made a lovely shimmery mess painting my cute little fins in a gradient from dark around the edges to light in the centre.

When painting your fins, I would recommend hand painting...

I painted the other side of the fins and added spots too. This time I sort of pushed them into the fabric to make the appear more blended out - hence paint covered hand above! This side turned out much nicer so these will likely be the front...

I'm using Setacolor fabric paint. They come in three ranges of paint for fabric - opaque, transparent and shimmer.
And yes, you heat set them just for 5 minutes with an iron. I put a tea towel over the piece I'm setting though - otherwise it gets of the iron!

I'm about halfway done the back of the tail - then I can start on the front!! I plan on making the front a bit brighter and lighter with more of the fabric colour coming through. :)

It's holding up really well! The paint I'm using is also dye based as it can be used for screen printing. This means the fabric maintains its stretch without cracking the paint! I'd highly recommend these! :)

Reviving this old thread because I'm about to get back into painting my tail. But I've also found a new technique that I absolutely love! I was painting a tail for my sister whose birthday is tomorrow and needed something quicker that still have the effect of scales.

I did this by dabbing the paint on with a small brush then discovered a better tool!

Finger painting is on the front and the other is the back. I can't decide which I like more. The finger painting looks cool but I think the other looks a little more like scales. What do you think?
I think it could be a nice quick way to make painted scale fabric tails.
